Underground

I'm watching season 2 of a show entitled "Underground".  It may not be on your watch list but sure has been on mine.   It has been particularly interesting lately as lives of two well-known names to the eastern shore are the topics.  Those names would be the wonderful Harriet Tubman and the infamous, murderous Patty Cannon.
I live in Sussex County, Delaware and just 3.9 miles away from the Maryland/Delaware border where Patty Cannon's house used to be. There were underground tunnels for her and her gang to move slaves between the two states to avoid capture.  Go across the road and you're in another state.
Below is a photo of a house which is not the original Patty Cannon house but it sits on the land where her house once did exist.
Below is a photo of three books which I own about the infamous Patty Cannon.  It is so great to see Harriet Tubman's character in the TV series Underground.
Of personal interest "The Monster's Handsome Face" there is noted that General Jesse Green informed the Mayor of Philadelphia of the movements of the Patty Cannon gang.  General Jesse Green is an ancestor on my father's side.  While he may have been a good ancestor I'm sure there are the other kind of skeleton's in the closet as well.

  2. that sounds like a good series. My uncle owned a house that had a hiding place for slaves that were being moved through the underground railroad here in the North.

  3. Hi Saundra,
I have not heard of this series but will definitely check it out!! I remember reading a book about Harriet Tubman in school!! What an amazing woman!! Have never heard of Patty Cannon but read a bit about her from your link and am so shocked and saddened that someone could do what she did!! How interesting that you have an ancestor who informed the Mayor of her gangs movements!!So glad there were good people who did what they could to stop her!!
Thanks for sharing this info about something in history that happened so close to your home!
Hope you are getting closer to being ready for rug camp!

  4. Is the series on Netflix? The only time I watch TV here at home is when on the dreaded treadmill and am always looking for something interesting.
    Thanks for the heads up.

  5. It sounds like an interesting series but I seldom watch TV. I read the profile of Patty Cannon on google just to see who you were talking about. She certainly was not a nice person.

    Enjoy the series.

  8. I love history but I don't watch TV. I love the stories of how quilts were used in the underground railroad. To warn as well as give directions. I also heard a worship minister speak about how the slaves would sing while they worked in the fields. They would sing directions of the underground railroad and the overseers had not glue. The directions usually involved the stars , big dipper, little dipper etc.
