THIS and THAT

Up for auction is a rug I've shown previously, at which time I mentioned the auction web site estimated a sale of between $3,000-$4,000.  Holy Moly, look what figure it brought.
Heck, I'd replicate that rug to the best of my ability and sell it for a fraction of that price.  Unfortunately newly hooked rugs on sturdy linen with new wool strips don't bring the price of antique rugs on burlap using old lindsey woolsy and fragile textiles.  But boy do those oldies look fantastic if taken care of well.

This design will climb to the top of my 'to hook' list until another shiny object catches my attention.  Speaking of 'shiny objects'..... leaving Walmart on the floor of the vestibule I noticed a shiny diamond looking item, not a ring, just the stone.  Nah, couldn't be real so thought I'd just leave it there.

But, what if it was real.  So I backed up, picked it up and put it in my pocket.  There was no silvery coating on the back like rhinestones have so could it really be a diamond??  Diamonds do fall out of rings as that happened to me with my first marriage.  Don't know when or where it happened and never did find it.

It was almost lunch time but I felt the need to take it to a jeweler and have it analyzed to see if it was a real diamond.  In the jewelry store I told the lady I'd found something and wanted her to evaluate it.  Put the stone in her hand and said, "it doesn't have the silvery coating on the back like rhinestones".  To which she said, "not all have the coating".  She took it to the back to look at it with her loop and returned.   Guess what ~ she said it wasn't a diamond.  Oh well, it was worth finding out instead of wondering.  And told her even tho it wasn't real I'd still like to have it.  She said, "okay, I was just going to throw it away here".  But then I wouldn't have it to chat about with a picture.
Sheila sent me an update on her Hearts Hook-along rug and she only has two side borders to go.  I love it when rugs have varying values of color, as you see in the background of the light as well as the top and bottom borders.  Looking fantastic Sheila.
Another winter storm, this time a 'nor easter', is headed this way for Sat-Sun.  While only 1-3" of snow is predicted this time, the winds are to be quite strong.  And of course the temps in the 20's during the day and single digits at night.  Ya'll I'm ready for spring!!!  To hell with this winter stuff.

Staying inside and pulling loops to keep my sanity.

  1. Do you know this jeweler? It makes me suspicious she wanted to keep it to throw away.
at least a hooked rug got good money. Lately they have been going cheap.
Stay safe in the storm thankfully this one is passing us by.

  6. Was hoping for you it was a real gem. Youzers on that old rug. I am so glad I purchased the few old ones I have when I did...and at cheap prices. I do like that oldie one though since I like horses. LOL Janice

  7. I'd have kept the stone too, real or not. Just because - pretty! shiny! sparkles! Perhaps a 2nd opinion? Seems odd that the jeweler was going to throw it away. Bummer for you that it's not diamond, at the same time I'm glad for whoever lost it that it's not a diamond.
Looking forward to seeing your version of the horse rug!

  8. Love the old rug... Seems there will always be value in the good, old, things. Re the "stone"...you know me...the skeptical attorney sort??? Yeah, the fact that the first "jeweler" was so quick to offer to do you the favor of throwing it away would be exactly the incentive I needed to head to the next jeweler and see what they had to say...except I wouldn't say I found it. I'd just say it fell out of one of your rings and were wondering if it would be worth replacing the setting, or something like that. It would give them less incentive to try to take advantage of you if it did turn out to be real. Shelia's rug is looking great!
