DOUBLE EAGLES

Double Eagles is finally hooked but not yet steamed.  I started it the first week of November and if you remember there was much reverse hooking and hooking the triangles on the border different colors to decide which to use.  Once I finally made up my mind it was smooth sailing hooking.  

The pattern measures 26.5 x 29 and hooked mostly in #8.5.  This is the color I chose for the border.

Once my hooking mess is cleaned up I'll put the floral back on my frame.  I'll work on that until I lose interest.  Anyone want to take bets as to  how long my interest will last? 😄

BORDER BOREDOM

Yep, it's true; I got bored working on the Double Eagle border so thought I'd tackle the humiliated floral and release it from its confines.  Although I was gung-ho to hook it but shortly after pulling some loops my confidence and interest diminished.  I hadn't even completely finished hooking the larger flower and into the tote it went.  This is what it looks like now.

I'm attempting to make it look old, and only hope I'll be successful.  But at least it won't go back in the tote of shame this time.  There is only one more side of the border to hook on Double Eagles so will look forward to working on this floral once the border is finished.

VINTAGE RUG SHOW

First is a bouquet of flowers and kitty kat.  Isn't this adorable!  No date or dimensions.

An oval hooked parrot rug, possibly a Frost design, according to the auction web site.  Again no dimensions provided.

The next isn't hooked but probably needlepoint or cross stitch.    The sampler style rug could easily be adapted to a rug hooking pattern.  It measures 21 x 38 from Ephrata, PA.  Said to be made between 1850-1900.  

A Geometric with Stars and Moons with great background dated 1900's with dimensions of 42 x 58.

This next one I've named Folk Art Horse for lack of a more creative name.  Someone asked for the pattern so I drew it to her specified 20 x 30.  It is already in the mail to to her.  For those of you wondering, with the overall dimensions the men happen to be 9" tall.

For you landscape enthusiasts is this lovely Horse and Buggy scene which measures 45 x 62.  Came from a NJ collection and was hooked early 20th century.

No rug show would be complete without a cat rug.   So here's double your pleasure.

Ditto with a horse rug...This was hooked 1920 and measures 19.5 x 37.5.  I like this design and don't know why I haven't hooked it yet.

Here is a close up of the profiles, colors and date.   Just love a blotchy background.

Hmmm, did I miss a dog rug?  For you canine lovers is another double your pleasure rug of dogs.  

And a view of the back.  I mention this each time a rug hooked when the self-bound edge appears.  Sure wish I could hook without a frame so I could pull off that technique.               

What a miserable rainy day it was today.  But hey, am happy to alive and still pulling loops at my age so got that going for me.  Drew a pattern today and shipped it, got my hair cut so now it is time for me to pull some loops and have a glass of "kickapoo joy juice".  For the life of me cannot remember where in my past I heard this phrase but it just popped in my head.  So had to 'google' it and it was a fictional beverage from the Lil Abner cartoon.  You can read about that on the link just above.

THIS, THAT and the OTHER THING

Will start off with a show-n-tell.  As you all know, I enjoy a glass or 3 of wine and for years have been collecting corks for some project to be determined.   At least 3 years ago I finally purchased a wreath form around this time to make a cork wreath for my son's game room.  It made perfect sense to give him back some corks as every Christmas he has contributed to my libation jubilation.

As time seems to go bye bye way too fast the project was never accomplished in time because Christmas seemed to just pop up out of nowhere each year, lol.  This year it was finally time to make it.

I wanted to buy some faux grapes or grape leaves but this isn't the time of year to buy those and I hadn't planned that far in advance.  HA!  Yet I purchased the wreath form 3 years ago and that wasn't advance notice enough?  Oh well, moving along....  My son and DIL love America and are patriots so the flags will do just fine.

The bottom outside row was the first that was hot glued on.  After that row dried I turned the wreath form over and securely glued the very back to ensure the foundation layer wouldn't fall off.  You want to be sure those corks are flat and I placed it on a plastic bag so as to not glue it to the table.

After that hardened I glued another row on top of the first row then tackled the bottom inside row.  There comes a time when the space isn't big enough for an entire cork so one had to be cut to fit.

OOPS, how the heck is he supposed to hang this thing???  I'd forgotten to plan ahead for that too.  Then I spied convenient gaps where a hanger could applied.  You can see one of those cut corks near the hanger.

This next topic will rustle up some anger I'm sure... prescription costs and health insurance.  In addition to my Medicare I have secondary health coverage for the other 20% after deductibles.  Also chose to have a prescription drug plan thru Humana.  The prescription drug insurance is more than I spend on drugs during the year but because of my age if I were to need really very expensive drugs the cost wouldn't put me in debtor's prison.

Biopsy came back from the colonoscopy and it confirmed what I had suspected...the collagenous colitis had returned.  The doctor prescribed the same drug (Budesonide 3 mg capsules) as before.  The cost from Humana prescription plan was over $400 ~ yes, over $400 for 30 pills and I didn't accidentally hiccup on the '0'.  And that was with my prescription plan.

So I checked to see what the price would be thru the NO COST GoodRx card one of my doctors always gives me after a visit.  You can see the difference in cost savings HERE.  I  went to Walgreens as the cost was less there than Walmart.  Do you believe that crap??????  So if you have a prescription which is expensive go to the Good Rx web site and type in the name of the prescription to see if it would be cheaper.  If it is, copy out the coupon and take it to the drug store when you pick up the prescription.

Now something I almost decided to not write about because you'll question my sanity.  Okay, so you know I am a little cray-cray, lol and go looking for orbs at Cape May.  But something happened a few nights ago that hasn't left my mind.  I was in a deep sleep when I felt the gentle weight of a hand on the side of my head from my ear to my brow. Immediately I woke up.  Wasn't fearful but rather comforted.  

Sometimes I don't remember dreams I've had during the night and other times the dreams are so vivid they seem real.  That felt like a real touch but don't recall any dream.  I felt that touch for several minutes afterwards.  Maybe it was a dream and what if it wasn't?  

Well kiddo's I haven't pulled a loop all day and I'm getting ready to do that right now.  Have a fantastic evening.

MISC. CHIT CHAT

It's December already?  How is it possible for time to pass us by so fast?  The clock is ticking too fast for my liking.  Tonight's post will highlight some rugs hooked by other folks. 

Most recently Margaret shared her finished rug of an antique adaptation I named Maine Garden, since she lives in Maine.  She chose the dimensions of approx. 24 x 36 and while the design is too dainty for me to hook it was her favorite.  She said it was hooked using #5 and #7 strips.  Ya done good Margaret and it is a beauty!

Her friend Diane (who happens to be McGowan teacher) decided to hook a primitive design I drew for her.  It is also an antique adaptation which I named Rainbow Petals and measures 24 x 36.  

But take a look at this magnificent Frost Eagle Diane recently finished.  It is gorgeous ~ the feathers are wonderful and just look at the eye and you can even see the detail of the tongue.  Diane said she hooked the eagle in #5 but the stripes were hooked in #8 ~ all textures were used in this rug.

And that's not all Diane hooked...take a look at this Yankee Peddler design hooked in #3 and #5 cuts.

Last but definitely not least is Nancy's recently finished work on my Mache' Jack-O-lantern design.  WOW, looks perfect!!!  Nancy you did a great job replicating my colors, we must have the same wool in our stash.

Also On My Mind

On and off my mind for years has been to hook a block or two from Lucinda's Reconciliation Quilt.  A few weeks ago when the itch to find my next project was on again I pulled out my Fall 2003 issue of Folk Art magazine to look at her quilt.

The quilt measures 85 x 97 and sold by Sotheby's October 1991 for a whopping $264,000.  Lucinda documented the finish date by embroidering "Done, Nov. th. 18th, 1867" in block B2.  But you can read more about this gorgeous quilt by clicking the link in the first paragraph.  Is anyone else interested in hooking one of these blocks?

VINTAGE RUG SHOW

There are several more recently found rugs on my flash drive to share.  A reclining deer said to be hooked late19th century early 20th.  Dimensions are 22 x 36.

The auction house listed this as a "recumbent dog" but is it a dog or cat?  Measures 37 x 56 and from a Maryland collector. 

Hettie was hooked early 20th century but no dimensions were provided.

I wonder if it was that rug which inspired Barb Carroll to design this rug I hooked in 2013 named Henny Penny.  Me thinks it was 😉.

This next one reminds me of the test pattern on the television back in the day before programming was 24 hours.  Anyone here remember those days?   Hooked on burlap late 19th or early 20th century using fabric.

Dated 1889 I'm thinking this may have been a wedding rug.  I see motifs like hearts, birds, eagle, anchor, cross, scissors, and horseshoes for good luck.

This lovely cat with bowl of flowers measures 57 x 76.  It sold for $1,650 and said to be hooked between 1900-1925.

'Tis a nasty rainy day in Delaware so have been reverse hooking and rehooking a few triangles.  Perhaps now that I've decided where I'm going on this rug (thanks to my helpful blogger friends) perhaps I'll make headway now.

eenie meenie miney moe

Choices, now I have visible hooked choices, so just need to make up my mind.  Didn't hook that primitive scroll at the bottom because it will be hooked in the same color of wool from the triangle border.  Don't know if it will be the unchosen color or the Ocean City wool in the top triangles.  Will reverse hook the  wool strip which shows up red at the bottom and replace it with a more brown piece of wool.

Although I reverse hooked the mint green previously hooked here is a photo of it again for reference.  

As you can see I've hooked a blotchy background  ~ below is the original antique.

Unless you ate at a restaurant everyone must have some great leftovers for tonight.  So enjoy your easy night and happy hooking.

I'M LOOK'N

...look'n for my next project; yes even before Double Eagles is done.  Must be sure to have something ready to go.  Recently I found this pretty 1880's floral with tongues border.  It measures 25 x 42.

As I posted that floral above I was reminded of the floral pattern I designed and is in the shameful prison of UFOs.

The log cabin geo below isn't something I'd like to hook but might appeal to some.

But this Sunburst geometric below is to my liking.  It was hooked 19th century with dimensions of 26.5 x 40.

This Potted Tulip rug was hooked early 20th century and measures 34.5 x 38.5.   From the estate of Kristina Barbara Johnson.

A white cat with flowers in the corners.  It measures 33 x 40 and hooked late 19th century.

An oval horse rug measuring 20 x 28 but don't have a date. 

This is a  view of the back so you can see the true and original colors.

Do you think these are doves or seagulls?  Whichever they are the rug measures 17.5 x 33.

Notice the back of the rug and how far apart the loops have been pulled; a way to replicate an antique.

The wool hooked and shirred rug below sold for $10,073.  The dimensions are 31 x 44.  While the colors aren't endearing (to me) I have seen some versions of this hooked in magnificent colors.   I just might draw this out and take it to a future rug camp where a pro can help me with color planning.

Finally, a runaway horse rug measuring 31 x 55 and from the estate of Laura Fisher.

And here is a view of the back with  previous repairs and visible newer damage.  Such a shame for the damaged edge.

REVERSE HOOKING, DYEING & RESTART

Welcome to the unpleasant side of rug hooking.  Nope, it isn't a badly drawn pattern (a/k/a Mary Mary), it is finding the right colors for the border.  Was sure the light green I had available would work to resemble the antique eagle rug shown below.  

But it didn't meet the mark because what I hooked was too mint green and underwhelming.

So today I dyed some wool and was sure it would work but after it appeared to be more blue and still not good trashed that idea.  Then I went to my milled wool selections and tried this below.  Nope, too dark and overpowering.  Perhaps if I'd used a more yellow/gold wool where mine is mellow this green would have worked.  My fault.

Then went to the wool I'd previously overdyed using the Olde Patina recipe and placed them in the triangles just to see.  Was definitely tired of hooking, reverse hooking and doing it all over again so just placing it there would give me an idea.

Also thought of a grey but don't have enough of that grey in the right eagle and the rest of the grey on my shelves is either too over-powering or not enough of the proper grey.  A gold didn't look right either.

IF there isn't enough of the olde patina dyed wool in my stash it is a dependable recipe and can replicate great results every time.  But as I'm leaving my wool room the question in my mind was...."WWBD" (what would Barb Do)?  Bet she could have immediately chosen the perfect wool if she could find it in my disorganized room.  Dear sweet talented Barb Carroll is still in my mind and heart ~ God Bless you Barb.

OH, I'd also briefly considered reverse hooking the light colored triangles and using a more golden color.  UH, ain't gonna reverse hook all that and eventually end up not liking it with the darker green anyway.  

Soooo, for tonight I'll concentrate on hooking the outward triangles of the border in the same wool and figure out the rest in the coming days.
