Antique Rug Show is Back

I love this Folk Art Memorabilia!  It measures 19 x 38 but age and designer are unknown.
This is the back and as you can tell by the destressed foundation it is hooked on burlap.  You can also see the original colors.
Next is a Landscape with hit n miss and floral border with dimensions of  31 x 52; date unknown.
That also was hooked on burlap and here is a view of the back and true colors.  People, this is why you should use GOOD linen foundation and  not cheap burlap.
The background makes this Steeplechase rug a little difficult to appreciate.  Circa 1930 it measures 30 x 42.
This wavy geometric is dated 1900's with dimensions of 36 x 38.  The departed Barb Carroll had a student in her class working on this before she passed.  I thought the project was interesting and later saw this antique listed on Pook and Pook.
Another very primitive rug is Rooster and Goose.  It measures 17.5 x 32 and hooked early 20th century.  It is so primitive I'm surprised there aren't initials of BEM or NGS hooked in it.
Speaking of Barbara E. Merry and her daughter Nancy Gertrude Scott, I have found some rugs which I haven't shown before.  Won't post them tomorrow but you loyal followers usually scroll thru your favorite blogs daily so will see them when posted.

Not sure how you handle holidays, any holiday really.  It really throws me off my game (that is if I ever had one) because I don't know what day of the week it is, if it a week day or weekend, what to do because TV scheduling is off, don't know if mail will be delivered or what the heck to do with myself; maybe after the new year I'll get my sea legs back.
😩

Happy hooking.

Antique Rug Show

It's  time for another antique rug show rather than bore you will another update of the two rugs in progress or photos of my work outside.  However I will tell you about my wasted time outside this morning.   Had high hopes for the product I purchased to wash my back deck since I didn't need any special equipment other than my hose and the product (Mold Armor) with its own hand held sprayer system.   I donned my face shield, rubber gloves, old clothing and went to work.

The instructions said to spray an area, wait 10 minutes and rinse.  No instructions on brushing but that if the staining was still there to re-spray.  Well, I did that and the wood didn't look 'like new' as indicated.  Yes the deck is in a shaded area so does get the mold stains.  Guess I might have to bite the bullet and hire it done but gawd knows what the cost will be with everything else going up in price.

Okay, now to the fun stuff....antique rugs.  Up first is Tree with Birds which sold for $9,375 and measures 34 x 48.
A Cat rug said to be hooked around 1910 is cotton on burlap measuring 26.5 x 41.  Considering she had limited colors she did a great job with the striped background and striped cat.
This is the back of the rug and the flowers don't appear to be too faded
A corner and close up of the textiles use.
Just love this Flower Basket, an Ontario rug dated 1920-30.  The front...
...and the back.  It has nice colors, not too bright or gaudy.
This is one block of an embroidered carpet by Zeruah Higley Gurensey dated 1832-35.
Another block of the same embroidered carpet but with dogs as the subjects.
And the entirety of this work of art which measured 12' x 12' 6".
Starry Night hearth rug circa 1830 sold for $7,500 indigo blue background.
Well there you have today's post.  And now it is time for me to cut and serge linen so I can draw another rug pattern.  Will save the drawing for tomorrow as it is just about wine O'clock. 🍷

Happy hooking.  Saundra

Inspiration for Antique Adaptations

Time for another antique rug show and I found a few goodies.  Below is Spray of Flowers early 20th century, measuring 22 x 42, collection of Kramer family of PA.
Three kittens playing with a ball of yarn, 22 x 39.  Wide range as to dates the rug may have been hooked ~ anywhere from 1900 to 1939.
Doves and Birds with center of hooked grapes.  No date given but provenance is Ephrata, PA and measures 21 x 37.
Six Houses rug with braided edge measures 31 x 45 and is the estate of Frank and Claire Glaser.
Dog rug with some hit and miss and leaves in design.  Also from the collection of Frank and Claire Glaser, measures 29 x 75
Three Rabbits with a hit and miss border.  20th century rug from the collection of Jack and Tommie Marsh.  Measures 18 x 41 1/2.
This is the back and it appears the last few rows of foundation were hooked thru all layers to protect the edges.
Two Masted Ships 1875-1899 from the estate of Elizabeth Vaughn measures 24.5 x 68.5.
Below is a girl sleeping on a big dog; from Ephrata, PA it measures 23 x 34.5 and hooked between 1900-1929.
Although  not a hooked rug....yet, I've had this photo for some time and it inspires me to design and hook a rug.  This is Stage Coach Mary (Mary Fields) who was the first African American woman to work as a mail carrier.  She was born into slavery in TN in 1832.
Another individual who inspires a rug is Harriet Tubman who lead hundreds of slaves to freedom via the underground railroad.
The rug won't be happening for a while as I would want it to be a primitive rug, not portraiture style.  But do want to pay tribute to these brave women in rug hooking form.
