Horses and Hearts

Horses and Hearts will be documented as finished in 2018 since the binding is almost complete.  There's just a few more inches to stitch the binding down but will save that task while waiting for my annual mammogram on Monday.  Nothing more boring than waiting for a doctor's appointment.
Which means Star Geometric won't get listed as a rug completed this year but rather 2019.  No way I'll get the remainder of the rug completed in 4 days.

Guess I'd better get hooking on the Star rug to pull as many loops as I can.

p.s.  Jacqueline asked what the finished size of the rug is.                                It measures 20 x36.

HORSES and HEARTS Rug Update

With just a little over two weeks away from rug camp I've got to start concentrating on pulling wool for the camp rug.  But am having so much fun with this one it is hard to stop hooking.

Since the horses were drawn coloring book style figured they were up for interpretation so made one a pinto.  The pinto reminds me of my friend's horse when we would go riding.  This is what the rug looks like now.
I've redrawn some hearts and another needs to be done.  But this has been fun to hook.  Since I love horses, the smell of them and the beauty as they move, it will be enjoyable to look at somewhere in my home.

For those just catching my blog, this is a design by Marion Hamm which originally had 8 horses.  It was also provided as a free to draw design in  an American Folk Crafts book.  So I'm thinking whoever drew this on linen wanted just 6 horses and drew hearts too close to the horses and some not straight.  But I'm quite happy for my catch!

New Project and Decision Made

As both previous rugs had been bound I needed a rug to keep the hands busy so pulled something from my stash.  It is Horses and Hearts, a pattern purchased last year at Cape May for a song.  The dimensions are 21 1/2 x 38.
After purchasing the pattern with no accreditation I started inquiring about the design.  Then learned it was a pattern by Marion Hamm and had been published in an American Country Crafts book with a free use photo.  The original design had 8 horses but whoever drew this one out chose to have only 6 horses and I'm quite happy with just those.

This will be something for me to work on from now until rug camp early November.  Am quite sure I'll not be finished hooking this one in 3 weeks as there will be yard and other work to do before camp.

I made my decision on what to hook at camp.....this is my project and will draw it up this week.  It is the one I'd intended to hook at camp but got wishy-washy.  Then after posting the line-up of victims that was the one that moved me the most.
Not sure my rendition will be as grungy as the one above but will try.  I'm sure the ladies doing #3 cut roses and bright florals will think I'm off my rocker.  That's okay as I hook what makes me happy and it will live in my house.

Welcome to unadulterated FALL Y'all.   I finally broke down and turned on my heat earlier today to raise the temp and then turned it off.  Some folks have reported having an early snow.  Now THAT I don't want to see any of yet!

Recognize this Pattern or Designer?

I was fortunate to get this pattern very reasonably at Cape May last year during the anniversary special pattern sale.  It has horses on it so picked it up fast.
I asked Norma if she knew who the designer was and she couldn't recall ~ but did say it was an antique adaptation.  I've searched Pinterest using 'horses and hearts' in the search engine and nothing like this shows up.

Am wondering if someone designed it based on this antique rug below.  This is the only rug with horses and hearts I could locate.
If anyone knows the designer I'd love to give her credit when I get around to hooking it.  Also would like to know the source for the inspiration.

Happy hump day for you worker bees.

WORK and PLAY

A couple loyal customers ordered patterns recently.  A Magdalena design was drawn last week, two patterns drawn yesterday and  shipped today.  Two designs were in the order to the same customer today ~ one being an adaptation of Hearts and Penny Flowers below.
As well as Horses and Hearts antique adaptation below.
The other WORK is cooking.  I do love to eat but hate spending hours in the kitchen.  That is why making a pot of soup or cooking a meal where there are leftovers for me to heat up is delightful.

I love stuffed cabbage but the traditional way requires a LOT of work.  So lucky me stumbled upon a recipe named "Unstuffed Cabbage Roll".  This is a photo of the still simmering dutch oven.  You can see some of the cabbage is still not totally cooked and before adding more tomato sauce and or water.
If interested, here is the recipe.  I made alterations and will let you know what changes I made so you can decide how to do your own.

UNSTUFFED CABBAGE ROLL

INGREDIENTS:
2 lbs ground beef (I used ground turkey)
1 large onion (I used 2 onions)
1 small head of cabbage, chopped
2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce (I used 2)
1/2 cup water (I added more as needed)
2 cloves garlic, minced (I used 3)
2 teaspoons salt (I used MUCH LESS + used sour salt)
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
PLUS... I added 2 stalks celery.

DIRECTIONS:
Heat dutch oven or large skillet over medium-high heat.  Cook and stir ground meat and onion in the hot dutch oven until browned and crumbly, 5-7 minutes.  Drain and discard grease.  Add cabbage, tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, garlic, salt and pepper.  Bring to a boil, cover dutch oven, reduce heat and simmer until cabbage is tender.

In case you didn't know, "sour salt" is citric acid.  In watching some health program a few years ago they mentioned the term sour salt and was confused.  Went to the local health food store and they didn't know what I was talking about.  So did a google search to learn what it was.  HA!  low and behold I had some anyway because it is a mordant for dying wool.

Not sure if the next on the list I consider work or play.  But did cut more quilt pieces for my star quilt whenever sewing starts again.  But what is considered PLAY is that wool containers were opened up and wool spread out to pick wool for my next project.  Yeah, even tho this Goat isn't done just couldn't contain myself.
