Misc. Rug Hooking Chit Chat

The rug labels recently made I have begun attaching to the rugs.  Only two sewn on so far with 4 more to go.  Of those 1 is for the Lititz Hens which is still on my frame.

Have been pondering what to work on after Hens since it will be finished before April rug camp.  While organizing a pile of wool and hidden beneath was a small mat I'd long forgotten about.  Didn't think I had any UFOs but seems there is one.  Finishing that is planned as the next project, it is small so doable.....IF I stick with it.

It is called Paisley from Fraser rugs and purchased around 2006 while attending rug camp in Ocean City.  Eric Sandberg had an evening class and Paisley was the topic.  As it was small (9 x 25) thought I'd give narrow cut hooking a try.   Since that time decided I'm not fond of narrow hooking and decided to hook it in my own wide cut.

Hooked what you see here and put it aside. Didn't have a color plan and wasn't sure what I'd do next so stopped.  Now is the time to finish or trash it.
This morning took a critical look at the pattern and what was hooked so far.  Would I continue with the red paisley and put different colors in the center or alternate the main paisley color one slanted row at a time?  Pulled a couple pieces of wool to see how it would look with alternating colors.
Hmmm, me thinks I'll go with the red paisley throughout and different colors in the center.  Will have a primitive black background and still haven't figured out the end borders yet.

Below are two hooked versions I've saved as inspiration.  The top one is hooked by my friend Lynne Fowler  ~ she can hook anything and with any cut.  I cannot read the name of the hooker of the second mat, both are beautiful.
As you can see in my version at the top, I have chosen to NOT have that jagged edge on my paisley.  Besides it would be difficult to achieve that look in a wide cut in such a limited space.

Have been perusing the internet and found more antique rugs.  One which makes my heart go pitter-patter and will one day be on my frame.  You will know which one that is when I next post antique rugs.

Happy hump day for your worker-bees, you're halfway thru the work week.

A New UFO Has Emerged

I'm no longer enamored with the paisley using my worms.  Plus it isn't something I'll enjoy working on even the night before first day at camp or waiting for my turn for my teacher.
So this piece will be waiting for me when there is nothing ready to go on the frame.  Perhaps by that time I can figure out if I want to do slanted rows of all red, or a row of blue, row of green, row of purple...and I'm referring to the outside paisley shape but alternately changing the inside shape.

NOW?  Heck, don't know but I've got to act fast to get something ready since I'm leaving at 0930 tomorrow morning to catch the ferry ride.  I'm so exhausted from lots of work yesterday and today in getting the house, yard, and camp stuff ready.  Yesterday I logged 14,226 steps on my fit bit which is more than a normal day of course.

And just a few minutes ago when I sat at the computer I received a message saying I only needed 8 more steps to make my goal of 10,000 steps.  Ya know my butt got off the chair and started counting steps thru my kitchen and into the office.  BUT, it took 25 full steps to reach what Fitbit said would be 8.  Why is that??

Isn't counting from putting one foot step first and then on the second count of the other foot as one step?

Okay, gotta run and figure out what to take and hook at camp in the extra time.  So I'll say ta ta for now but will have my iPad at Cape May in case anyone wishes to write.

Hooking Paisley Shapes

Since my hit and miss mat is all hooked and nothing on my frame decided to pull out a smallish (9 x 25) Paisley Star Tread sold by Fraser. Numerous times I'd thought of selling the pattern since it should be hooked with a narrow cut but something made me keep it....who doesn't love paisley???

First I attempted to hook accommodating the spikes in the paisley; pulled out the loops and put it back in my stash.  Next morning decided I needed a fix with what few hours allowed in a day to relaxation. Remember I'm getting ready for rug camp, have to clean, cut grass and get the house ready for my Ben/house sitter.  And yup, pulled out that pattern again as that was the only one which spoke to me to work on now and while awaiting color planning at camp.
As you can see above I've chosen to do traditional curved paisley shapes instead of the jagged shape.  Plus am trying to use up more worms but certainly won't be able to use any strips wider than #8 for this.

Haven't had time to really think this out but am considering making the paisleys using the same theme red exterior below and to right and below and to right again on the third row.

Then perhaps a different color (blue, green or gold) to either side of that slanted line.  Obviously you can tell I'm way out of my element here but I'm going to play along until I'm working on my camp rug and put this sucker away as a UFO.  At least there will be something to pull out and work on when there's nothing else on my frame again.
