Happy Halloween

Don't have a lot of Halloween decorations out this year but will show you what is.  First is my favorite Halloween rug Nantucket Broom Ride designed by Lori Brechlin and sold by Spruce Ridge Studios.  It was fun to hook in Kris' class and I enjoy it each year.
I used to make dolls but stopped doing that about 10 years ago.  Here is a witch with a hooked face I made.  Also made the paper mache' pumpkin as well.  Prices too high for a vintage pumpkin so made my own.  I don't have wonderful vintage Steiff Cats like Robin (The Cranky Crow) but do have this fun thing I purchased from a JoAnne Fabrics years ago ~ think it was JoAnne.
A pattern by Lucille Festa named Hobo Joe.  It was meant to be a cut out door people pattern but I chose to make it into a mat.
A better view of Lucille's pattern is below.
Since I have your attention I may as well show you other Halloween themed rugs  and  other things I've hooked over the years.  My design is "mache' Jacks" and a better look at my pumpkin.
A design by Kelley Belfast I call A Little Birdie Told Me because her design looks like the bird is whispering into an ear.
Another Lori Brechlin Design named "Do Goode Be Nice" was hooked in another Kris Miller class and she also offers the pattern for sale.
A few years ago I was the lucky recipient of a kit giveaway by Maria Barton from her Star Rug Company's blog.
Below is a Barb Carroll Jack I hooked which was a free pattern insert in the 1997 Sept/Oct issue of Rug Hooking Magazine.
Many years ago I made this applique quilt piece which I've hung on my front door previously to celebrate Halloween.
HESTER is another free design by Lori Brechlin which was in Primitive Quilts and Projects.
I can't forget Jack's Crow which I hooked last year.  A design by Terri Leamer of Winter Cottage Studio.  Think I'd like to hook it again and in better colors.
Yet another Lori Brechlin pattern Merrie October hooked last year was quick and fun.
A Witch doll I used to make which sold well at shows.  I tried to make each one slightly different.
And another example.
From a Not Forgotten Farm pattern booklet I hooked the Wytch pulling a pumpkin.
Just found this picture of witches.
Last but not least....Kitty in Candy Corn was a small thing I made which sold well and even tho I could probably sell many this time of year am just not interested in even making easy things any longer.  Am over dollmaking (cat making).
Today I hauled 8 wheelbarrow loads of rocks and here is the sum of two days work of 16 loads.  And there is a lot more for me to haul.  Me thinks these rocks are reproducing faster than my wool worms.  Calling my work outside done for today and will find pleasure hooking.

RUGS HOOKED DURING 2020

There were 15 rugs and mats finished during 2020.  First one was a Cushing pattern of a Winter Sled.  Cathy of Acorn Hollow hooked one and posted it on her blog and loved it.  As luck would have it she was given another in a swap and I was fortunate to receive it in a giveaway ~ thanks Cathy.
Since Valentines Day would be the next holiday decided to purchase and Hook Heart Butter Mold pdf pattern from Primitive Heartstrings

Always too many rugs on my to do list and finally drew out the Lancaster Barnyard pdf by Lori Brechlin.
The next pattern I drew was Posies and Stars antique adaptation and this still makes my heart skip a beat.  Must be that border which does it and will take this one for the rug show.
Like many of you I receive daily updates from Lisanne of W. Cushing and as soon as my eyes feasted on Windy Day immediately placed an order for it.  After all I'd just gone thru the March winds and figured this would be a great table piece each windy season.
On my blog I invited readers to join me with a Cat's Paw playtime and had two people join me (Lauren and Elaine).  This is my mat.
Early Bird, a Lori Brechlin design by Spruce Ridge Studios was the next pattern on my frame.  Often I will tweak a design to make it more 'me' so this one has a border all the way around, not just on the top and bottom.  I know the worms were a border of sorts but wanted it to look framed.
Yup, another antique adaptation, I named it Bespectacled Lion because the lion appeared to be wearing glasses.
And.....another antique which I named Pride, Honor, Freedom.  The first block of the triptych design represents Pride in the US, the middle reminded me of fireworks honoring our military and celebrating patriotic holidays.  The third block with the Eagle and Shield represents Freedom.

The Charters of Freedom are group of three documents which protects our freedom:  The Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights.  The framers of our Country were ever thoughtful of citizens at the time.  Tho they did their best to protect us from tyranny little did they know what has transpired since.
Knew Jack's Crow was a no-brainer to hook when I saw it as it is a cutie.  It was purchased  from Terri Lemer of Winter Cottage Studios, you can get yours HERE.  I purchased the pdf and just might hook another later.
Another pattern designed by Lori Brechlin and sold by Spruce Ridge Studios was Old Tom.  Guess you might say I hooked it twice because after hooking it didn't like the too bright colored wool I chose for Tom.  This is what it looked like after reverse hooking and hooking again.
Yet another Lori and Kris offering I chose to hook Merrie October 31st.
The Woolly Santa pattern by Karen Kahle had been in my stash for several years and finally decided to hook it.   Again using my tweaking powers 😏 made my Santa without a sack in front.  Instead he was holding the smaller lamb in his arms instead of it appearing as tho it was popping out of the sack.
Another pattern once seen just had to be mine was New Year's Eve.  It's from the artwork of Lindsay Bowles and pattern by The Wool Farm.  Frankly I'm considering removing the button clock and pulling wool from that area so I can hook the actual clock which was intended to be hooked.
Blogger friend Cathy of Acorn Hollow also hooked it and she did hook the clock.  This is a photo before she was finished and it has so many things that I like more than mine...oh well.  Good job Cathy!!!!!!
The final rug finished in 2020 was Over the Moon, from the artwork of PJ Rankin and pattern by Spruce Ridge Studio.
So there you have the 15 patterns I hooked during the pandemic lockdown.  I  mean,  there was nothing else to do but hook and eat 😁.  Well guess I could have cleaned my house but who would want to do that when they can play with wool?

Today's chore is cutting grass and it just might be the last time it will need cutting this year...if I'm lucky.  The weather is changing and so is the growing cycle.

Couldn't Take It Any Longer

I did manage to bind Old Tom and binding Woolly Santa binding has just begun.  But just couldn't stand not having a rug on my frame any longer.  Yes I've plenty of drawn patterns in my stash.  But my heart was set on doing my own version of the sweet Homestead Design  by Terri Leamer.  Of course I have $11 for the pdf pattern but wanted to put my own spin on the design with a log cabin, and other critters.

I had a slew of drawings to choose from and placed them in various positions to decide what I wanted.
Even cut in half a huge piece of linen to use the flip side for my wanna be design.  It happens to be a doll to match one I'd made a few years ago.  This is what the pattern looked like but the hooking never came to fruition.
Below is the doll I'd made and subject of the never hooked piece.
After a couple days of frustration and failed planning efforts for my wanna be design, I pulled something from my stash.  At least it is giving me comfort having immediate gratification as the wool was also gathered and I've a hook in my hand again....ah...happiness.
Haven't pulled many loops as I've been preparing for rug camp ~ leaving around noon.  I pray I don't come home with Covid and am equipped with several masks, a face shield and even taking my own pillow cases to place over the hotel cases.  Also taking wipes to make sure everything is wiped down and a spray for the room and sheets.

After coming home I have a suspicion eventually I'll nix my design and purchase Winter Cottage Studios design by Terri Leamer; after all, hers is a nice design.

After Hooking Comes Binding

Merrie October is all hooked and needs binding.  Yet it still feels a little unbalanced with the color orange even tho I tried to put some orange in the ground.
Initially I did try introduce fall colors in the leaves but that seemed to distract from the design so decided to make the leaves green.
Have finally bound Jack's Crow...
... and Old Tom still needs binding as well.  Since October comes before Thanksgiving I'll bind Merrie October next despite the fact Old tom was hooked first.  By the way, Old Tom really doesn't look this bright in person.
Happy hooking everyone.

More About Jack and His Crow

I received an email from someone living in the Land of Nod inquiring about Jack's Crow.
The email went like this:

"AHEM!  I do believe Jack's crow somehow strayed too far from Nod when he was just a fledgling and ended up at the Edge of Nowhere....his father, Poe, who still lives in Nod goes out daily searching for his son, but has not yet been successful in bringing him home.  Can you ask Jack what he named his crow so I might comfort Poe and let him know he is safe and content???"

So being a concerned parent myself, albeit my child is now an adult, I responded with:

"Oh, Jack had already told me his crow's name is Hugo (Huginn, the Norse name).   Jack also said Hugo has no desire to return to the Land of Nod as he is dedicated to Jack and the information he provides about the world outside End of Nowhere.  No longer a fledgling, Jack says Hugo is now off his leash and free to roam wherever he desires.  Hugo
is quite content, says it was time he left the nest, but sends love to his father Poe.
Me thinks there might be future adventures of Jack and his Crow from time to time.
