VINTAGE RUG SHOW

The 'fat lady $ang' and was a melodious voice!  The Townsend Orbiter is on its way to its new home in Florida.

My search for old rugs hasn't been fruitful lately so will show photos I've saved previously.  Maybe the auction houses will become a little more active closer to fall.  Here's a folk art horse with stars and floating leaves with dimensions of 28 x 45.   No date was provided.
Another de-wormer rug which may appeal to you more than circles.
The next one is rather faded so if you are having a hard time figuring out the design, it's a bird on a Branch.  It measures 20 x 40 and said to be hooked around 1910.
A lone deer dated between 1890-1930 from the collection of John and Joan Thayer.
Am sure this next one isn't antique but thought it cute.   The great deer hunter and deer having a 'sit down'.
Obviously hooked by someone who loved her dog and cat.
An antique rooster hooked 1880 and measures 33 x 44.5.
The only thing I've learned about the huge 8' 10" long rug is the size and comment it " depicts life on a Maryland east coast farm".
A primitive floral no other info provided.
Just listened to the weatherman and there is "a chance of thunderstorms today thru Thursday".  Well, it is hurricane season after all.  Just hope all is clear when it comes time for me to leave for Cape May.

Happy hooking.

ANTIQUE RUG SHOW

A floral hooked late 19th century or early 20th.
The rug below looks like delicate fanning flowers and leaves.  Love the blotchy background of this and the one above.
Center star with circle of flowers measures 39 x 41 but no date.
Yarn stitched motifs.  I enlarged it so you can see the stitched detail.
Songbird with hit and miss border & background.  Dimensions are 32 x 36.5 and hooked late 19th century.
Two  Scotties measuring 20 x 31 from the estate of Penny Marshall.
Tree of Life hooked by EL measuring 28 x 39.  What sort of textile do you think is the black and red trim around the edge?  I don't think wool would keep its shape like that ~ interesting.
Below is a close up of date and hooking.
A companion piece hooked by EL of geometric shapes.   This one also measures 28 x 39.
And a close up.
Wish there was a better picture of this palomino pony and more info but this is all I could find.
Happy weekend everyone.

OLD RUGS

Recently found a few old rugs, one of which gave me a chuckle and that one will be further down in the post.

Here is a quite busy hit and miss pictorial rug circa 1900 which was found in Lancaster, PA.  It measures 36 x 78 and from the estate of Laura Fisher.  I believe that would be the Laura Fisher of quilt and antiques fame.
The framed Cottage hooked rug was dated between 1850-1899 by the dealer.  The hooked piece is nice but personally don't find hooked rugs framed like this very appealing.  It looks out of place somehow ~ unnatural.
Perhaps they thought it would preserve the hooking but that could have been accomplished without a gilded wooden frame.  Below is a close-up view of the back and the gold hooked part of the cottage.
Love this Stag hooked late 19th early 20th century.  It is a Canadian rug and no dimensions were provided.  Me loves those blotchy backgrounds!!!
Ram and Birds measures 24 x 38 and from the estate of Laura Fisher.
Here is the back of view of the rug.
Another rug from the estate of Laura Fisher is the Boy eating Watermelon which measures 26 x 40.  It was hooked around 1930.
I just may have posted this Farm Scene before but it is sweet and one day would like to hook it....maybe, lol.  It  measures 24 x 40 and said to be hooked around 1900.
Now for the rug listed on eBay which provoked the chuckle.  It was advertised as a Floral Folk Art rug listed as "reversible".    It was hooked between 1920-49 and measures 20.5 x 35.   This is the front.
Here is the back and the hooker pulled her loops very closely so little of the foundation showed thru.  Ya gotta give the seller credit for pushing the envelope to get a sale.
I'm still plugging along with the Monochromatic Floral...slowly.

Have heard spring is here but I'm wearing a turtleneck and sweatshirt.  What gives?  I've got to have my back deck washed and sealed but the temps haven't been warm enough for consecutive days for me to do that.

Happy Hooking.

Oldies But Goodies

Yup, it's that time again ~ time to show you some old rugs.  Below, the  Black horse with leaf order was hooked 19th century.  It measures 24.5 x 38 and the auction house said it sold for ONLY $198.90!!  Sheesh, wish I had been that lucky final bidder.
This 1800's Quebec rug has been restored by Sandi Percival.  I cannot see where the restoration took place and would say Sandi did a fantastic job.
Two Cats on a geometric background dated between 1870-1890.  This one sold for $6,500 and measures 33.5 x 53.5.
Here are a few close-up photos of areas of that rug; I love it when the auction house does that and/or shows the back of the rug.

A hooked quilt block with floral grids hooked 20th Century and measures 28 x 51.
Here is a view of the back, notice how the rug was hooked thru double layer of foundation to make it's own self binding.
Neither the abstract design nor the colors strike my fancy.  But obviously the person who hooked it in the 1900's thought otherwise.  It measures 27 x 45.
Black Cats and Bunnies measures 25 x 39 and was hooked by Bertha Martin in the 1930s-40s.
A pair of colorful Parakeets hooked between 1890-1920 measures 30 x 47.
And finally, something which put a smile on my face when I saw it ~ Puss in Boots.  Dimensions are 20 x 34, provenance is a NH estate and estimate for date is between 1900-39.
Again this one has been hooked thru double layer of backing to make its own self-binding.
Back to the background on Ox Farm so there will be a completed rug photo to show on my web site.  Happy hooking.

From Challenge To Antique Rug Show

Thought everyone would enjoy seeing some antique rugs while waiting for the last of the challenge pieces to show up.  And in case anyone is wondering ~ I had no adverse reaction to first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.  Perhaps with the second shot I'll have a reaction but am very happy to finally have received the first one.

This first antique rug intrigues me as it is a Horse with cave art appeal which was said to be hooked between 1800-1899.  It measures 28 x 47; this is a close up.
This is a full view but at an angle.
Another horse rug, I believe the one below is an E.S. Frost design.  No dimensions or date were provided.
Although somewhat faded except for the center, here is a close-up of the flower.
From Canada is Silver Black Fox and in the auction description said it is with Maggie and Jiggs. The rug measures 22 x 51 and is the collection of Jim and Ilona Fleming hooked 1935 so guess it isn't quite the legal age of public domain quite yet.   I'm not familiar with the history or names so maybe someone could enlighten me.
Here's a Hit and Miss Geometric from the Williamsburg Folk Art Museum.  Sorry, don't have dimensions.
The date on the rug below is being obscured by the floral arrangement but it was hooked in the 1920s  Don't have dimensions but it was being auctioned in York, PA.
The below rug is too ornate for me to hook but thought you'd like to know about it's meaning.  The 1876 Crowned Eagle, beehive and conjoined cornucopia horns symbolize steadfastness, promise and plentiful bounty of freedom, value of work, faith, piousness.  It measures 33 x 44 and still in excellent condition.
A cute Cat with a triangle (saw tooth) border and flowers.  No dimensions or age provided by the auction house.
Finally a 1900s Floral with Scrolls measures 18 x 34.
Here's a close up of the yarn and knit fabric.
Below is a back corner of the rug; take note how the hooker folded over the edge and hooked a self binding.  I've always been amazed at how they managed to do that because I need my gripper frame and they had to accomplish that task without any frame at all.
Have a great day and happy hooking.
