I LOVE Antique Rugs

And since there is no new news that means it's time for another rug show.  I have hooked a couple E.S. Frost Sheep designs, including the one with scrolls. This particular rug is facing in a different direction than the ones I hooked.  This one measures 30 x 43 it is lovely and as you can see is well worn and soiled.

Quite primitive red folk art horse circa 1920, wonder if it was hooked from a toy or a real work horse?  The rug measures  17.5 x 35.

Nice floral and great scrolls, sorry but don't have dimensions.

I really, really like this Lion Welcome rug which I've had on my flash drive since 2019 hoping to glean more information on date, dimensions etc.  Since I've not discovered that info I'm posting it anyway.

Mild temperatures today and tomorrow also.  However, because of the change of weather have heard there will be high winds and thunderstorms tomorrow.  Hope like heck more trees aren't blown over I've already several huge tops of trees in my yard which are too heavy for me to haul.

One Month Ago....

....January 15th, was the official beginning of the Granny hook-along.  There were 7 of us who participated and we are nearing the end of this fun group project.

Elaine just finished hooking her adaptation which she drew free style by hand using elements from Granny's designs.  The tree is wonderful with the mix of yarn colors, so is the background with that mix of green.  Great job Elaine and so happy you joined in.

Denise only has a little of background left so no doubt she'll be finished soon.  Denise started with a light background color and changed her mind to use a color similar to that Granny used in an original cow blanket foundation.  Must admit I'm smitten with that horse Denise.

This has been a fun group event but we're not quite done until all rugs are hooked.  But remember, "When One Door Closes Another One Opens".  The same can be said for 'hook-alongs'.  It really will be happening soon ~ promise.  But this door isn't quite closed.

YA GOTTA HAVE HEART

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY.  The heart display on my harvest table.

Here are a few other rugs with hearts that I've hooked.  Below is an antique adaptation I hooked and named Glazer Hearts as I believe that was the last name of the person selling it.

Horses and Hearts happens to be on the floor in the kitchen from the living room.

Another antique adaptation which I made into a pillow has a couple hearts.

1909 Horse also has them.

I hooked this small Maggie Bonanomi heart from one of her books and regretted the color I used.  One day I'll hook it again in primitive reds.

When I was a kid in school we loved Valentines Day and gave each other Valentine's Day cards and heart candy to each classmate.

I don't a significant other to give me a valentines day card or candy; I buy my own dark chocolate Hershey kisses, I hook my own hearts and get a lot of love from my readers!!!!!   Thanks to all of you and Happy Valentine's Day.

Rug Hooking Updates

Will start with a photo of the Blue Bowl I'm working on.  Now wondering why the hell I drew it so big.  Am sure I'll need to do some onion skin dying of soft orange for the stems and not confident I've enough of the soft green.  But would have had enough with a smaller design.  Oh well, like that saying goes "...make do or do without".

Sheila finished hooking her Granny Donaldson rug.  Her design of the motifs held a special meaning for her with an angel, heart, child and woman.  I've emailed Sheila personally to thank her for joining the group and get her mojo back.  

We're almost finished with this Granny Hook-along with only 2 members left.  But me thinks since it is going to be a crappy weather weekend they too will be finished ~ as they were so close.

Weather has been a roller coaster ride in Delaware and elsewhere on the east coast.  The last couple days we've had 60+ degree temps and I've taken advantage of that to lop off more pine tree limbs and drag to the back of the property.  Once today I tripped over a stick and fell to my knees carrying limbs.  Sure hope I don't end up with water on the knee in a few days.  It hurts like hell to have a needle stuck in there to remove the fluid.

Antique Rug Show

To entertain you while awaiting info on the next hook-along and the finish of the remaining participants, here are a few rugs to enjoy. 

Looking forward to spring?  Here are some bunnies ~ the auction site said it was bunnies and flowers.  Although very hard to see in all corners and the middle there are other leaves or buds so guess that is why it was named Bunnies and Flowers.  This is one time I wish they'd posted a photo of the back to see the original colors.  I've had this picture on my flash drive since 2016 and finally showing it.

Two ducks swimming under stars and moon measures 19 x 35 and no date was provided.

Why did the auction house think this was a Fish?  To me it looks like a geometric; unless they thought the fish had a tail in the front and the back.  Came from Ackworth, GA and measures 25 x 41.

Cabin on the Lake hooked on burlap 1937, you can see the date hooked in the canoe.  In the collection of Kristina Barbara Johnson, the rug measures 84.5 x 84.5 ~ one huge rug.

Bouquet of flowers in and Urn hooked in the1900's measures 30 x 39.  The scalloped edge adds more interest to the rug rather than having an oval or a plain circle.

This rug with Blue Birds was hooked with cotton (Lauren's favorite textile, lol), tap on the photo to enlarge and see the fabrics close up.  It measures 17 x 37.

Another rug hooked with cottons is this Floral with a checkerboard background.  It measures 17 x 39.  I rather like this one but no more cotton hooking for me either.

Pastel Rooster has similarities to the antique I'm working on called Blue Bowl of Flowers.  Welllll, only because of the pastel colors I guess.  This Rooster rug measures 25 x 38

Today reached 60* and tomorrow is going to be great too.  But then the bottom drops out in a few days.  Have heard rumors of rain late tomorrow evening then turning to snow.  Don't know what the result will be but my back pain and other arthritic bones know somethings happening.

These Just In

Kim has finished hooking her Granny adaptation by Karen Kahle and just needs to bind it.  

Denise only has the background to hook and she will be done.  Her piece had a lot of critters in it.

 

Sheila sent this updated photo just in time to make today's post.  She will soon be done also with only background left.

More than half of us have completely hooked our pieces and today I'll start binding mine while watching The Five.  As I hate binding as soon as the show is over will switch over to hooking.

Elaine had some appointments and other life in the way issues yesterday but when she sends a photo I'll post hers too.  Bet she is really really close to being done.

FYI, soon I'll tell you about the new hook-along which Betsy and I collaborated on.  Believe it or not it will be even easier and with fewer motifs than the Granny hook-along.  So it will be perfect for new rug hookers of all ages.  And can play outside the box to do extraordinary things with the design.

Doldrums on Blue Bowl

Once upon a time I was super excited to hook this antique adaptation.  The old rug has haunted me for a few years now and recently decided to draw it big.  Why?  

First thought was I could put this aside and work on smaller stuff when I get a bug up.... and it was fun until starting to hook the soft flower and leaf colors.  Then all of a sudden it didn't look like the antique nor my expectations of what my wool would do.  

Perhaps that is because it is a big rug for me and I'm working too close.  The bowl is huge ~ or at least to me it is yet the bowl was the fun part.  This rug measures 30 x 41.   Below is a picture of the original antique.

Tomorrow I'll post the latest updates on the Granny Hook-along rugs and tease you with the next group hook-along.  It will be an easy fun project for new hookers and perhaps this is why I'm antsy, maybe I'm ready to play in the wool box again and sit this big one aside. 

If you know any newbie hookers this next one will be a perfect beginner project.  Will also give you experienced hookers a challenge too.  Can't wait to share it.

Hop on A Hook-Along

Both Betsy (Heavens to Betsy) and Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) have finished their Granny cow blanket rug.  I posted my finish already and there are still 4 of us remaining so stay tuned to see what the other gals have accomplished.  I know life gets in the way and this wasn't supposed to be a speed race anyway, so you still have something to look forward to in a future post.

Here's Betsy's finish ~ she picked her favorite motifs from Granny's blankets and added her own to make the design hers with the memory of Granny still there.

Lauren is also finished and love her choice of colors also.   After seeing these two rugs makes me rethink how I'd hook it the next time as I like both of these better than mine.  

If you look thru the comments on the previous blog post Betsy asked what the next challenge or hook-along would be.  While I don't have any plans and know several followers had indicated they'd join in the next one, am wondering if anyone has a suggestion.

Almost Finished??

Could that be true?  Are we nearing the end of the Granny Donaldson hook-along?  From the recent photos received it appears that way.

Sheila has made great progress despite her changes and looks like she will soon be finished. 

By now Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) is probably already done with her Granny adaptation as she took a break to finish Ole Jack and only had the background to finish.

Here's mine and yeah all my loops are pulled and officially done but must confess that seeing everyone else's choices of colors really humbled me.  

There are six of us in this hook-along, or at least those I know of, wonder how many joined in on the side lines?  If anyone out there decided to join in on your own but was too timid to commit.  I'd really love to share your work.  Remember...I was a newbie once also and you should be proud of your work.

Am excited to share the updates of the other gals as soon as they share a photo with me.  Happy Saturday and happy hooking.

Misc. Chit Chat

Found a few antique rugs on the internet which interested me, will share those, also a couple rugs I've hooked and a couple Granny updates too.  So it will be a diverse post.  

First with some antique rugs ~ Basket of Flowers was hooked early 20th century measuring 27 x 35.

I like the design and if I hooked it would make the hit and miss border at an angle like Vintage Hearts which I hooked below,  

or Posies and Stars antique adaptation I hooked except with a few less red wool strips in the border.

A Canadian hooked rug named Thistle measures 23 x 38.  This is the front and at first I thought the flower on the left was faded.

But when looking at the back it was obvious a different color than red was used.  Note also the rug was self-bound by folding over the burlap foundation and hooked thru all layers.

Hooked mid 20th century the Love Birds rug would make a great Valentine themed rug and even wedding rug for a family member.

A Boy and Girl playing with their dog.  Appears the boy is wearing a sailor suit, it measures 17 x 32.5 and was hooked early 20th century.

Now for a couple Granny Hook-along updates ~ Betsy (Heavens to Betsy) sent an update and cannot believe she has accomplished this much with having a business and hooking on another rug with friends each week.  Hers is so much more interesting than mine; she has added wings to the birds, different values in the dresses, cat and interesting choice of wool for the basket.  But guess I shouldn't be surprised at her talent as she IS a rug hooking teacher for goodness sake. 

Kim (My Field of Dreams) is making great progress on her background and will have the fun part of the border to do next.  By now she is probably already working on that border.

Betsy said she and a few other gals are hooking a Jane Stickle quilt design and told her I hooked one in 2011.  A group of us from Yahoo Rughookers bought the book "Dear Jane" to choose the quilt designs.  I chose patterns which I was sure could be hooked in no less than #8.

Below is how I designed my Jane Stickle rug.

Snow is almost all melted with the rain this evening and very mild temperatures it will probably be all gone tomorrow.  However just might end up with that recurring lake behind the house.

Better get to my hooking...ta ta.
