In a couple days we will be stepping into a new year. A few decades ago I'd already have purchased my New Year's outfit and looking with anticipation to dancing the night away. I'd be present when the countdown at midnight took place ~ that was then. Now I'm quite content welcoming in the new year behind closed eyelids.
More than likely it will take me a while getting use to writing 2025 on checks and other documents. Will need to transfer appointments scribbled on notepads to the new calendar and birthday reminders in there as well. Eventually all will be working rhythmically like the year before.
I am not superstitious yet I have already purchased the ingredients for my southern 'good luck' black eyed peas meal. It was a tradition for my mother and so it continues. Some folks do a lentil soup and sauerkraut meal. Frankly I love sauerkraut, but will stick with my mother's tradition.
Last year I made a boxed Jiffy corn bread recipe and it was very dry. Years ago I'd make cornpone, which is moist and delicious but takes too much time and I want it in a 'Jiffy'. Thought Janice suggested something she does and I've written her to confirm but haven't heard from her. Does anyone have suggestions on doctoring up a package of Jiffy mix so it isn't as dry?
Finally, I no longer make New Year's resolutions because rarely do I stick to them. Now I just try to do better in the coming year. How are you preparing for the New Year? Any resolutions?

It is just another day for us ....we will be lucky if we stay awake til 10:00 ! We do have a special meal on New Years Eve . We used to get together with friends at one of our houses , so no one drove home ...those days were fun .
ReplyDeleteI'm just trying to find a hooking project to start off the New Year !
Just hope we all have a Happy . Healthy 2025 !!!!
Happy New Year's Eve eve my friend. New Year's is something I just ignore. After years of working as a bartender and cocktail waitress, I could never celebrate it since I was working. After I no longer worked in those professions, going out to celebrate was the LAST thing I wanted to do. While first married, we tried going out for dinner a few times but gave up that as well since everything was so crowded, so rushed and the food was always mediocre. So we then started staying home with my husband cooking steak, lobster and crab legs. Those days I loved. Then that, too, came to an end and now it's just another night. I'll see the new year in - I always am up past midnight - but it will be nothing special. Sorry...can't help you out with the Jiffy mix issue. I've never made one and I am not partial to cornbread or anything similar. ~Robin~
ReplyDeleteSorry Saundra, I dont look at that email much anymore because it is our store one. Need to change that on my blog. I always add in a can of cream style corn to my jiffy mix. Happy New Years Eve. We dont celebrate either and just stay home. Janice
ReplyDeleteNo fancy ringing in here anymore. Can't remember the last time. My Mom always put a dime in the black eyed peas (our tradition also). We as kids always swished around for it before we ate (or didn't). A dime seemed like a fortune to us. I don't honor it anymore tho my sister does. I bought a can once with best intentions and it lingered in the cupboard for years.
ReplyDeleteOn the Jiffy thing...sorry no we do Marie Calendars. Happy New Year!
A friend of my Niece makes a very moist cornbread with Jiffy mix. It's her contribution to the annual Christmas chili at Niece's. She ignores the box instructions, and uses a can of undrained corn, a can of cream corn, 1 box of Jiffy cornbread mix, and ?????....I wish I'd written down the rest of what she said! I think butter is in it also. She also uses a 9x13 pan as she's had better results than with a 9x9 pan (outside over-baked by the time the inside was done). It does come out more like cornbread, not cream corn casserole.
ReplyDeleteWe really don't have a NY Eve or Day meal tradition. It's been years since DH and I have treated the day as special, other than doing the calendar swap. I gave up the resolutions years ago, never did start with the "word of the year" thing.
