JUST ANOTHER RUG SHOW

Another Barbara E. Merry rug has been put up for auction again.  This one was hooked when she was married to John Merry.  Although hard to see, MERRY is hooked above the roof of the home.  If I am recalling correctly, and again hard to see, are the words "Wedding Day" at bottom left and story was that Barbara hooked her wedding dress into the rug.  

Below is an combination applique with hooked or proddy border.  No info on date.

A bowl of flowers hooked 19th century measuring 27 x 54.

Two cats with sun shining on them.  Again, no date but dimensions are 21 x 35.

Deer hooked late 19th century (31.5 x 44.5).

An eagle flying on or with the shield.  

Man's best friend by George Wells 26.5 x 62.

When first seeing Man's best Friend I thought it might be a manufactured rug.  But then I looked at the back which was part of the listing.

Another landscape, and not a BEM,  circa 1890 measuring 33 x 59.

A sulky racer inscribed "Let Her Go".

A variety of animals with a sawtooth border circa 1900's (27 x 43).

Spring tulip and rabbit design with April hooked into the hit and miss background.  Hooked late 19th century (24.5 x 35).  It is still for sale.

And tumbling blocks circa 1900 (26 x 41) also still listed for sale.

LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION?

If so, perhaps you'll get inspired for a new hooking project in one of these hooked pieces below.  Oh, speaking of hooked rugs...have you feasted your eyes on the latest ATHA magazine article "Collectors Corner"?  Some cool looking old rugs and one I commented about in a previous blog post ~ the  one with 155, or was it ISS or the reverse?  

Now on with the show ~ am sure Robin will love the following rug with cats playing ball.  What was interesting is that the person who offered it for sale had purchased it from Joel and Kate Kopp.  They are the folks who published the booklet "Art Underfoot".  The rug measures 23 x 38.5.

Am sure I've posted this horse profile rug previously so it must be up for sale once again.  Said to be hooked early 20th century.

The bright horse rug below was found on Fiddler's Antiques FB.  Whenever I see a very bright rug I have doubts on the dates hooked in or stated by the auction house.    AND, I would like to add that when I hook an antique adaptation with that original date on the rug, my label indicates it is an antique adaptation and put the year I hooked it.

Faces with hit and miss (23.5 x 40) hooked early 20th century.  This one sure doesn't inspire me one bit, lol.  But since it was different thought I share.

Birds under a fruit tree hooked early 20th century (22.5 x 36)

Years ago I'd contemplated hooking this Bengal Tiger since I have the full size pattern in an old book.  This one might be an adaptation but the design is old.  It is an Edward Sands Frost design (an enterprising Maine tin peddler).   Frost began selling stenciled patterns on burlap in the 1860s, by the time he sold his business in 1876, he had about 180 patterns.  Measures 29 x 45.

And finally, a dog, which could be a Golden, hooked late 19th century.

Very soon my driveway will be patched and sealed so it looks new again ~ not totally resurfaced tho.  So this morning after breakfast I'll go outside to scrape out weeds growing in the cracks of my asphalt driveway and spray to kill any roots hiding between.   And will continue shoveling and pulling weeds (liriope) which has encroached along the sides of the driveway making for a more narrow roadway.  I want the whole  driveway covered, not just what the workers see.  I'm too old for this stuff but too cheap, to pay someone to do it.  And that is exactly why my leg got injured.  You'd think at my age I'd have wised up by now, lol.

RUGS ON DISPLAY

This antique rug is a familiar one which is being auctioned again and expected to get between $3,000- $4,000 for it.  You can check out the auction HERE.  It has also been on my 'to hook' list in the past and think I'll put it back on.  Sheesh, I'll have to live at least another decade or longer to hook all the rugs on my list.

Said to be hooked around 1870 and measures 38 x 44.5.  

Dog, which I think is a Boxer, hooked early 20th century (19 x 40).

This is an attractive floral circa 1900.  With the size of 10 x 12.5 it may have been a chair pad, or perhaps a stool cover.

Farm landscape with cow and barn and dimensions of 19 x 35.5.  No mention of date and have no idea if those are initial at the bottom right or something else.

This could easily be a view from my kitchen window in the spring ~ a deer eating tree leaves.  Dated 1922 with dimensions of 37 x 56.  It is hooked with cotton and various other textile strips as I saw the back on the auction site.  Awesome to see how much detail she got with those strips of rags.

Having a blog seems like work sometimes, but also has its perks.  I've met people thru my blog I'd never have an opportunity to know without it.  Because of my blog, a woman searched on line for initials on a rug which was part of a group she purchased at auction.  Those initials were BEM.  

Her main focus were the other two rugs as she knew the people ~ Cleland E Selby and Suzanne both of whom were rug hookers.  But she wanted to know about this "BEM" name.  And so she found me on the internet as I've written about Barbara Merry numerous times.  

As I look at the bottom rug in the photo below, I'm thinking the 'S' in the lion's tail and those around the lion's mane are the initial of Cleland Selby.

Am glad Donna found me as she shared this photo of a rug I've not previously seen hooked by BEM.  Plus, I learned about the Selby's.

Turns out Donna is also a rug hooker and has taught her granddaughter how to hook.

An update on the Hearts Hook-along I hosted ~ Jo Smith has completed the hooking and now just needs to steam and bind it.  She was the last to join the hook-along but came thru quickly with her finish.  The wide wool surrounding the hooked rug is what she will use for binding.  And just in time for Valentines Day Jo.  Congratulations.  

Snow storm predicted here for the weekend but finally inches not fully known.  Sometimes it ends up with just flurries but not so sure that will be the case this weekend.  But I'll play it safe and prepare for the worse.  And I always have wool and hook to keep me occupied.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Found these two Nancy Gertrude Scott hooked rugs recently and waited to show them until now.  First one with Santa and star measures 17 x 35 and is listed for $399.  In case you aren't aware, she is the daughter of Barbara E. Merry whose rugs I've posted before.

The other rug listed in the same auction is bigger (29 x 36) this Santa is listed for $699. 

While Christmas is centered around Santa for the children, we know the reason for this blessed holiday is to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  I want to wish all my Christian friends a very Merry Christmas and my Jewish friends a Happy Hanukkah.

TWO FAMILIAR SETS OF INITIALS

Those initials would be NGS (Nancy Gertrude Scott) and BEM (Barbara E. Merry).  I have posted their work here before but I've acquired a few new followers and found a few new rugs since that time.  Nancy is the daughter of Barbara who followed in her mother's footsteps into hooking rugs and painting.  Nancy's work is mostly folk-art hooking and some painting whereas Barbara's was mostly landscapes.  You can read a little more on Barbara HERE.

These are a few recent finds of Nancy's.  Was surprised by the train rug and wonder what the story is behind this memory.  Most of Nancy's work was around the farm she lived on and around.  

I found this Santa listing very interesting.  It indicated this early hooked piece was when she used an acorn to identify her work before being talked into using her initials.  The acorn is bottom right of Santa and the only piece with an acorn I've found.

The rug below measures 17 x 24 and she signed her last name instead of initials.  Perhaps this too was before she started using her initials.

A Welcome rug where Nancy signed her name at the top.  

A boy with dogs also signed N Scott.  I don't have chronological dates when these rugs were hooked.  This one measures 31 x 37 and from the estate of Laura Fisher.

Kids eating watermelon.  Her mother Barbara used to hook rainbows in some of her rugs which, according to Barbara, represented hope.  Are those rainbows hooked in this border or watermelon rinds?

Dimensions  of the rug below are 33 x 53 and her initials hidden behind the auction house name.

Statue of Liberty measures 27.5 x 34.5.

This row of houses/buildings was a familiar scene hooked by Barbara too so must have been a happy memory.

In other news ... while eating my soft oatmeal this morning, all of a sudden I felt a chunk of tooth/silver filling mixed with the oatmeal.  As luck would have it I've an appointment on Wednesday for a cleaning where they can check it out.  Am sure I will need a crown as the area is large and part of the shell of enamel gone.  So $$$ plus try to find a spot in my schedule that isn't filled in with the vein procedures.

Guess I'll go hook while there's time at home and not at a doctor's office.
