A FEW OLD RUGS

This is a smorgasbord of designs which might pique someone's interest for an antique adaptation.  Some of these rugs are still listed for sale and the auction house has indicated that some people have shown an interest in purchasing.  Each time I see that notation wonder if one of the interested parties may be Jenny.

I recently drew an antique adaptation of the rug below.  The person fell in love with the border so the horse you see was not the main subject.  Another style weathervane was inserted instead.
A sweet hen and chicks, circa 1900.  Dimensions are 15.5 x 31.5.  Love that faded red barn.
Janice will like the
rabbits and anchors rug below, me thinks.  Dated circa 1900 original size is 30 x 54.
Another rabbit rug listed is this one with the chain link border.  No date was provided and it isn't as interesting to me as the one above.
A few 8 point stars said to be dated late 19th to early 20th century.
Listed as sheep no age was provided of the rug.
A nice Clipper Ship rug is listed from a Chester County, PA estate.  No date provided but looks old (27 x  42).
Look at this huge rug of hooked houses dated circa 1880.  When I saw this listing it reminded me of the cute house mats Janice Prims By the Water has hooked.  Click on her link to see a couple.  Perhaps this will inspire you or her to hook a few.
This rug of horses and foals measures 26 x 51 but no date was provided.  It is still listed for sale.
This last rug is not an antique  but most likely an adaptation of one.  But thought the story in the listing was interesting.  It was hooked 1972 by Ethel Bishop, the grandmother of Dr. Robert Bishop, Dir. of The Museum of American Folk Art.
Tomato/tomahto.  Tonight's the night I may need to cover my volunteer tomato plants.  They have provided me with luscious gourmet type tomatoes, some of which you see here.  The red ones were a tomato-come-lately but I'll take whatever fruit it provides.  Last year I had yellow tomatoes well beyond the season.
Christmas is still 2 months away and a personal hooked gift to family or friend is most special.  Plus saves you money if things are tight.  So consider drawing out a little something to hook, as there's still time to get it done before the 25th of December.  Or in Elaine's case, get those knitting needles warmed up to do a cap, scarf, socks, etc.

Just might have to turn on my heat if it gets too dang cold.  But I'll hold out for as long as possible.  Happy hooking.

ANIMAL RUGS OF OLDE

My flash drive is filled with mostly geometric and animal rugs so will post animal themed rugs this time.  An orange red horse with leaf border, no date was provided.
This antique lion and trees rug sold for $6,875 (don't know which year) and measures
35 x 52.
I hooked an adaptation of this rug in 2012 which was color planned by the dearly departed rug hooker extraordinaire Barb Carroll.
Nine animal panels hooked early 20th century.  Animals facing all four sides, dimensions are 36 x 40.5.
I love deer rugs but this is definitely not a color scheme I'd follow, too much bright red for me.
Dated 1885, this cat rug has a decorative felt edge.  Measures 29 x 67.5.
Sure looks old but don't have details, someone who reads my blog loves chickens.
A naïve primitive barnyard animal rug with hit and miss border.
Promoted as "confetti horse" this 18 x 29.5 rug is from the collection of Ed and Anita Holden.
Below is a close up of one of the corners so you can see the textiles used.
Whoever hooked this must have had a dog that would hunt.  In it's element, the dog in the cattails with doves and pheasants.  Dated 1920 measures 32 x 55.
Scotties dated 1900-25.
Hooked horse (36 x 58) from the estate of George Fernald Chatham, NH.
Wasn't sure what that white spot near the ears was all about as it didn't appear to be an eye.  The auction house showed the back view of the rug but still didn't seem clear if it was a repair since it didn't have fabric in the area.
There are many more animal rugs on my flash drive, lots of eagles, geometrics and florals.  So guess what you'll be seeing more of in future posts.

Do you believe just 8 more days until Christmas?  This year has just slipped by in the flash of an eye.  Yet it will seem like forever until spring gets here.
