JUST ANOTHER RUG SHOW

But first, my today ... the temperature reached 81 degrees and I got hot working on the leaves which still aren't cleaned up.  We are in a drastic drought situation with burn bans throughout the state of Delaware and Maryland.  Yet I hear of a sliver of a chance of rain in some areas in the news.  As much complaining as I did with the rainwater in my back woods and yard a/k/a the Lake, sure could use some rain now.  Anyway, on with the show ~ ~

A central rose with scrolls dated early 1900's and measures 30 x 57.  Too fancy and elegant for me tho.
Listed as Canadian Love Birds and dated the 1900's, this is more my style although I'd probably hook a border and eliminate the tongues.
A dog and rabbit rug no date was provided but it is cute.
An old gray mare hooked early 20th century dimensions of 27.5 x 39.  Guess that pretty much describes me too, perhaps this should be my next project since I'm also an old grey mare.
Tho not a hooked rug, I found this England 1540 heraldic pouch and story very interesting.  The pouch was used during the marriage ceremony as perfumed herbs were stored inside and both men and women wore it on their hips during their wedding ceremony.
A very tattered geometric rug below, no date was provided by the auction house.  But it reminded me of a rug I hooked in 2011 for a Yahoo Rughookers challenge.
You quilters might enjoy this part of my post.  The challenge was to hook a rug based on blocks from an antique quilt made by Jane Stickle in 1863.  The quilt, story and quilt blocks are in a booklet called Dear Jane.  If you want to know about the antique quilt and book you can read about it HERE.
Tomorrow is supposed to be another warm day outside so will try to accomplish more yard work.  The leaves aren't gone but there is so much work still to be done everywhere.  After the winds of the last couple days I see limbs have fallen which need to be cleaned up.  OY VEY, or as Lauren would say, "the joys of homeownership".

Thankfully I've a hobby/passion/entertainment to keep my mind and hands busy inside.  Cannot wait until this floral is finished and think I'm sick of flowers after this is done.  Hope you have a hobby you enjoy as well.

Wish I'd Kept A Journal

You have seen my comment 'channeling Magdalena' on a few blog posts when working on one of her designs.  Now wish I'd kept notes on my thoughts/questions while hooking her rugs.  One such recent question I'd ask .... is that meant to be a hooked paw print on the Great Granddaughter's Rug.
It wouldn't be the first time someone wrote a journal to the creator of an antique textile, as there is such a book called "Dear Jane".
Brenda Manges Papadakis kept a journal of her thoughts/questions as she was replicating the 1863 quilt made by Jane A. Stickle.  The book was a good read in addition to getting the pattern pieces which are offered inside the book.

In 2011 a few of us on Rughookers Yahoo took a challenge to make our own Jane Stickle hooked rug.  It could be any size and could take a little creative license.  There were no prizes as this was a group challenge with a deadline date and those who finished in the allotted time had their rugs published in a section of Rug Hooking Magazine.  This was my version which is hooked in #8 cut.
More rain in the forecast today, as if we haven't had enough already.  Happy hooking, quilting or whatever floats your boat.

QUILT and STITCHERY Patterns for SALE

On this post there are 4 offers for sale, since someone may purchase more than one item I will combine shipping.  Therefore shipping will be added to the final cost.  Sales to US only (sorry friends in Canada) I just don't want to deal with or worry there may be declaration forms to be filled out.

#1 ~ DEAR JANE journal and pattern book by Brenda Manges Papadakis (autographed copy) ~  $40 plus shipping.
I looked on Amazon to find out the cost because I cannot remember what I paid for the book before I hooked the rug below.  If you click on the Amazon link (above) you will see what others are charging for the book.
The book is intact, no pattern pieces cut as I copied the motifs I wanted to use in my rug.  There are 160 pages in the book.  And it is fun to read what Brenda wrote to Jane Stickle as she replicated her quilt.

#2 ~ CROW CREEK pattern booklet by Denise Clason $5.50 plus shipping.  Unused booklet, first photo is of the front cover.
Back cover and subsequent pattern pages uncut.

#3 ~ WORTHY HANDS applique and stitchery by Pat Peak $7.00 + Sh.

#4 ~ SHOW ME YOUR GARDEN by Sarah Sporrer $20 +shipping.
The booket is uncut and has a total of 64 pages.

The sales will go to the first person to respond.  FYI, if you are a NO-REPLY blogger I will not be able to reply to you or send you a PayPal invoice.  So if you happen to be first but a NO-REPLY, the sale will go to the second to respond to the offer.

Good Luck,

Saundra

More Hooked Rugs

Another Magdalena design I hooked was McCue Eagle.  It is at my front door for now, but when 1909 Horse is finished that might be my new 'greeter' rug.  The photo below was taken on the deck in natural lighting.
In one of the books in my hooking library I saw an antique rug with a stag so decided to adapt it to a chair pad.  The shape was intended for a particular antique rocker.
Then wanted to hook a larger rug using different colors for the stag.
In a class with Barb Carroll I hooked Brave Hunter, an antique adaptation and pattern offered by Woolley Fox.  You may find it interesting to note the original antique had a gun instead of an arrow in his hands.
Getting antsy to hook another Magdalena rug I pulled out linen and Sharpie and drew Magdalena's Dog and Crows.  The background is a mixture of various greens but mostly using my favorite High Meadow Green recipe from the Beautiful Wool dye book by Laurice Heath.
Always admiring E.S. Frost's designs drew up and hooked the Sheep design with Birds and Flowers.  I've sold several patterns of this design and have enjoyed seeing how others hooked it ~ here is my version.
The above rugs were hooked during 2010 but also participated in a challenge or two and hooked some purses.  I won't bother you with the small stuff.

In 2011 I hooked a couple Karen Kahle designs; one was Home Tweet Home which quickly sold at a show.
But before taking it to the show enjoyed it for a while.  Here it is on my harvest table with a homemade bird.
Another Karen Kahle design was Tea Cozy, which I still have.  I've thought about dismantling it and doing something else with it since I don't use it as a cozy and it didn't sell at the show.  But am not sure what I'd do with it in that curved shape.  Can't make a purse out of it because the design would be upside down with the roundness at the bottom.
This was the year of the Sincerely Jane Rug challenge held on Yahoo Rughookers.  Photos of participants' rugs are in an old issue of Rug Hooking Magazine.
The reason the challenge was named "Sincerely" Jane is because there  is a book named "Dear Jane" written by Brenda Manges Papadakis.  Brenda documented her journey replicating the 1863 Jane Stickle quilt by writing letters to Jane as she did each block and joined them together.  It is a wonderful read and if you quilters don't have this book on your shelf, it should be.  Included are all the pattern pieces for the quilt.
It is a wonderful read and if you quilters don't have this book in your library, it should be.

Sincerely Jane was a project that could be put aside for a while to work on other things.  Knew the deadline and worked accordingly.  Was in the mood to hook a design I drew for Polly Minick, which was a small part of a larger design.  This is Boy and Dog Parade which was part of Polly's 4th of July design.
I was now ready to tackle scrolls, which until now I'd totally avoided.  There was only one teacher who I thought could help me do it right....yup, Barb Carroll.  I love how it turned out and it is hanging in the living room over my fireplace mantle.  I've sold a few patterns of this but must admit it is a bear to draw.
In the mood for a small fall fun mat it was time to hook Cat in a Shoe by Lori Brechlin; it is a design in one of her booklets.
It is time for lunch then back to hooking 1909 Horse.  FYI, today the droplets of rain in those two spots are still occurring; strange phenomenon for sure.

SINCERELY JANE RUGS PUBLISHED

In a previous blog I wrote about the challenge which Jo-Anne Harris generously organized for the Yahoo Rug Hookers Group.  It was a challenge for anyone who desired, to design their own rug using the quilt patterns from the Dear Jane book written by Brenda Papadakis.  We were given a full year to accomplish the rug, and it could be any size, color, cut, etc. that each participant decided.  Often I would post updates of my rug as I progressed, and this is my finished rug.
Well now all those Sincerely Jane Challenge Rugs are in the latest issue of Rug Hooking Magazine with a great article by Jo-Anne, and comments about each rug written by the person who hooked their rug.  It is a very nice article and must admit the challenge was a lot of fun with plenty of time to complete the project.

For those of you who may not subscribe or do subscribe but haven't received your issue yet, this is the cover of the November/December 2012 issue of Rug Hooking Magazine.
And if you wish to read the teaser on the Sincerely Jane Challenge click on this RHM  link.  There is also a real cute free pattern insert of a Santa by Lucille Festa.  So if you don't subscribe, go out and pick up your copy or order it on-line thru the link provided above.

Thanks for dropping by.
