CHANNELING MAGDALENA

As of this moment I'm still thinking of hooking Magdalena's Animal Parade rug.  The first picture is the original antique hooked by Magdalena.
Evelyn Lawrence was the first person to hook an adaptation of the design and she sent me this photo of it as soon as she finished hooking it in 2012.  Evelyn gave the 33 x 79 pattern line drawing to Barb Carroll.
Another adaptation of Magdalena's design was hooked by Cindy Jeffcoat.  Sure wish it was a full frontal photo but you can still see how well it was color planned and hooked to replicate the original.
And just recently Alice Fraizer finished hooking her version of the design and posted it on FB. I'll be looking forward to seeing what Alice will have on her hooking frame next.
No way I'll hook a rug 33 x 79 and even the Domestic Zoo pattern I hooked was huge for me at 22 x 66 (below).
I've enlarged the design and printed out a pattern line drawing measuring 19 x 48.  While that seems like a descent size for me (compared to 33 x 79) it will still be an issue tilting the frame and rotating the pattern.  Yet I've briefly considered enlarging it to 21 x 57.  BUT, since I'm still not done hooking Giant Flower have more time to decide which size to do oh, and the plus one ~ OR will the new Magdalena end up being the plus one which gets set aside while I work on a more comfortable size rug???.

Well kids, it's November and you know what holiday next month is... I can't say that word or Laure will call me out on it.  If you need or want to hook some small gifts for friends or family how about a 'mug rug'?  You could hook some small ones with dog bones or paw prints for the friends with pets; or small size rugs for children with dollhouses (or is that a thing from 'the olden days')?  Seems like Edyth O'Neill was also channeling Magdalena in this old blog post which you can check out HERE.

More Cape May 2015 Fun

There were so many other photos to share that I thought there should be two posts.
Top design is a runner designed and hooked by Kay Leisey ; the Patriotic Sampler is a design by Cammie Bruce and hooked by Marion Wilson.
Sheep over the Moon designed by  Joan Gerwig and hooked by Nancy Tiffany.
Spanish Princes, another huge rug hooked by Cheri Reid, and she is a really fast hooker.
Spots designed and hooked by Cammie Bruce.
Prairie Santa hooked by Betty Ann Brittingham.
 Pumpkin Trilogy.
Pumpkins and a black cat.
Judith Phillips designed and hooked this rug named Resistance.
Trick or Treat and Smell my Feet are Lori Brechlin's designs drawn by Spruce Ridge Studios.  My pal Deb added her own colorful spin to the designs.
Above are two pieces designed and hooked by Cammie Bruce.
1846 Turkey at the top is a design by Anne Nichols which was in a old issue of Needl'Love.  Can't read the information on either so don't know who designed or hooked the sampler.
Above are two Magdalena designs I drew and hooked.
The striped cat is Hester, a design by Lori Brechlin which was in an issue of a magazine.
Top left is Hobo Joe, a design by Lucille Festa and was designed as a cut-out but I chose to make it a rectangular shaped piece.  The crow was my design hooked Magdalena style.
Sally Raub hooked the floral above.
Have seen the above antique rug numerous times and is on my 'to do' list but still haven't hooked it.  This one was hooked by Kay Leisey.
Pear Tree was hooked by Carol McKay and designed by Lori Brechlin.

I've told you how much fun we have at Cape May ~ actually all rug camps are fun.  But in the year 2015 at this camp I never laughed so hard.  Here are a bunch of us sitting on the front porch about an hour before dinner.
To the left is me, Cheri Reid, Amanda (Kris Miller's sister) and Judy Phillips who was the instigator of all the laughter.  We were enjoying a delicious frozen marguerita.
To the right of Judy is Jill in the blue and white, and Mary Lou Bleakley (my first rug hooking teacher) howling with laughter.
And to the right of Mary Lou is Kris Miller and Elise (Mary Lou's daughter).

We were having so much fun and you can see the front porch is empty.  So Linda finally had to come out and see if we planned to eat dinner.  That was probably the first time I've EVER been late for a meal there 😄
My pal Deb is there somewhere I'm sure... maybe this side of Elise.

Believe it or not I still didn't get all the rug pictures posted on this blog post either.  Do you want me to do another post of rugs from this year or move on?

Rugs Hooked in 2019

The year 2019 is coming to a close so thought I'd give you a rug show of the rugs I hooked this year.  First one of the year was Lititz Hens which is an adaptation of a Magdalena Briner Eby design.
Still having the antique adaptation bug hooked Early Farm Scene a Frontier Homestead pattern.
Finally a UFO which had been hidden for years, the Paisley Stair Riser was finally finished instead of being trash.  It was designed for a narrow cut and I was determined to hook it in nothing less than #8.
Next was an adorable pattern named Cat Nap designed by Kelley Belfast and too adorable to pass up.  So that was next on my frame.
Back to the antique designs of Magdalena....  When seeing the Great Granddaughter of Magdalena was donating the original hooked rug to the Historical Society of Perry County knew it had to be on my frame next.
Below is my attempt at an adaptation of that wonderful rug originally hooked by Magdalena.
Have always heard and even repeated, these words:  "Use it Up, wear it out, make it do or do without".  That was the slogan from the War Advertising Council of 1944.  That was a time when most resources were being used for the war effort and conserving in the home was promoted.
Then it was time for Cape May rug camp with teacher Miller who I always enjoy.  The pattern to be hooked was Oh Glorious Day, a design by Lori Brechlin and pattern sold by Spruce Ridge Studio.
In November Kris Miller was my teacher again and took a design named Friendship Bells by Folk Art Landing.  There was a little creative license taken and this is the result.
Was looking for something small to hook until I could decide on my next project so picked one from my stash, a design by Tonya Robey called Winter Bloom.  It is all hooked but still have the remainder of the whipped edge to complete.
That next major project happened to be and antique adaptation I've named Mighty Whale.  And yup, it was all hooked AND bound before the new year.
Am anticipating completely getting the whipped edge finished on Winter Bloom before going to bed tonight and I'll have a clean slate for works hooked in 2019.

Throwback Thursday

In anticipation of the upcoming Rugs By The Sea rug camp thought today's 'throwback' photos should be from 2013.  We Three Amiga's (Deb, Char and I) have a special place we sit in the afternoons to sip wine, chat and/or hook.  We call it "Our Veranda".  Here is a photo of my roomie Deb checking her  emails
Then sweet Char, who HATES having her photo taken is making a snarky look at me as I take the forbidden shot.  The look silently says..."there will be payback".  She is fine lady but you don't want to get her Irish up ðŸ˜‰.
Then a photo of me saying "cheese".
When attending any rug camp I take a project to work on before the teacher gets to me.  That project was Lollipop Bouquet, an antique adaptation designed by Magdalena Briner Eby.  For some reason the shirt I'm wearing immediately triggers memory of this rug.
I totally enjoyed hooking that even tho it had 66 circles.  That is why I didn't hesitate hooking the Great Granddaughter's Rug with two lollipop bouquets in the design.

Am doing this blog post just before leaving for dental surgery to ensure you'd get a post today.

Almost...but not quite...

I'm referring to the Great Granddaughter's Rug.  Since I'm so close to the finish line considered waiting to post this but was anxious to show you the rug.  Plus I've the Patriotic Pumpkins freebie design by Kelley that I'd like to work on.

The dimensions of Magdalena's rug measured 32 ½  x 43 ½.   I drew mine out smaller and it measures 25 33  ½.
Have tried to stay true to Magdalena's color plan but using whatever colors of wool is here.  Also tried using as much pre-cut strips from my worm bags as possible.  A few times I've taken an #8.5 or #9 and cut in half just to use what is available.  But sadly it doesn't appear many of those bags are reducing in size.

And....am making one hell of a mess as I progress.
See, told you it was a mess.  At one time all those wool strips on the side arm, on the back of the sofa and on the seat of the sofa were in their own bag.  No longer; and they will all need to be separated (again) and put back in the proper bag.  Guess I'll never learn to be neat.

In case you're wondering, the mat on the foot stool with the two birds (Two Old Crows) was designed and hooked by Tonya Robey in 2006.  I was lucky enough to purchase that and a few more of her wonderful pieces.

Got the grass cut today and it was time because it hadn't been cut since prior to my leg surgery ~ which isn't healing fast enough for me.  Doctor prescribed a surgical soap and antibiotic ointment prescription.  I try to keep my leg elevated as much as possible.

Before cutting the grass I made sure to wear a bandage over the wound and wear long pants.  Also don't want any more sun spots so wore long sleeves for the couple hours I was outside.  Hey...it was hotter than hades under all those clothes ~ how did the folks manage when they were all bustled up and covered up to the neck back in the day???

Karen Kosmider, did you receive my response to your question this morning?  Both tries to reply were bounced back to me.  Email me at saundra125@comcast.net to let me know.

Have a great Sunday evening.

Wish I'd Kept A Journal

You have seen my comment 'channeling Magdalena' on a few blog posts when working on one of her designs.  Now wish I'd kept notes on my thoughts/questions while hooking her rugs.  One such recent question I'd ask .... is that meant to be a hooked paw print on the Great Granddaughter's Rug.
It wouldn't be the first time someone wrote a journal to the creator of an antique textile, as there is such a book called "Dear Jane".
Brenda Manges Papadakis kept a journal of her thoughts/questions as she was replicating the 1863 quilt made by Jane A. Stickle.  The book was a good read in addition to getting the pattern pieces which are offered inside the book.

In 2011 a few of us on Rughookers Yahoo took a challenge to make our own Jane Stickle hooked rug.  It could be any size and could take a little creative license.  There were no prizes as this was a group challenge with a deadline date and those who finished in the allotted time had their rugs published in a section of Rug Hooking Magazine.  This was my version which is hooked in #8 cut.
More rain in the forecast today, as if we haven't had enough already.  Happy hooking, quilting or whatever floats your boat.

Great Granddaughter's Rug

Have been anxious to get the lollipop bouquet hooked so I could show you the update.
In case you don't recall, this one was drawn to the size of 26 x 35.  When back on the frame think I'll finish that section below the lollipop bouquet then move to the top.  Will hook the other upside duck first then move downward to the other lollipop bouquet.

Again, here is a photo of Great granddaughter Ellen Jacobs and her son Gregg the day she was donating the rug to the Historical Society of Perry County, Pennsylvania.
If you tap on the photo to enlarge, and if you look hard at the left of the first lollipop you will see what I believe is an image of a paw print.  So naturally I drew it on mine.

Today it was cool and thought it would be a great day to work outside as I did yesterday.  But it ended up drizzling and getting cooler, so dang... I was sequestered to inside the house and forced to hook, har har har ðŸ˜ƒðŸ˜ƒ ðŸ˜ƒ.

Happy hooking.

Taking My Time

With all things enjoyable you want to make the pleasure last ~ you want to take your time.  That is how it is with hooking a Magdalena rug.

Okay, okay, so some time this week was spent Mother's Day, same day as my Daughter-in-Love's birthday, at their house.  And....today had a pattern to draw.  But that does not take away from the enjoyment in hooking a Magdalena rug.

This is my progress so far.
If you scroll down to previous posts you can see the original rug hooked by Magdalena Briner Eby.  This design is known as "Great Granddaughter's Rug" since it was passed down from the family to Ellen, the granddaughter.

From a past hooked project......Someone wants to purchase Cat Nap but I want to fix the eyes and it needs to be steamed and bound.  Call me crazy, but Magdalena trumps money for a few more days.

My Wool Surprise

Do you have those odd ball pieces of wool in your stash and don't think you'll ever use it for anything?  Must admit there have been days I'd thought of getting rid of wool which seemed undesirable/unusable.

While perusing my wool room for wool suitable for various parts of
Great Granddaughter's rug I came upon a piece which would work perfectly for a duck.

Magdalena's original rug measures 32.5 x 43.5, but drew mine 26 x 35 ~  more suitable to my home and hooking desire.
Here is my wool surprise.  It worked perfectly for the upside down duck in the top left hand corner.  Have no clue where I got it and am sure I'd not have purchased it from a teacher.  So it must have come from the thrift shop or inherited from a friend.
If you'd like to have a closer look and compare to the original, below is a photo of the same duck from the original.  Isn't exact, but close enough for me.
I've had unsuccessful dye results yet found that same wool was prefect in another rug.  So save those undesirable colors because you never know when they will work perfectly in a future rug.

Happy Mother's Day.
