Magdalena Briner Eby Rugs I've Hooked

Friend Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) did a blog post and mentioned me and the Magdalena rugs she is going to show at some venue.  While I might have hooked more Magdalena rugs than her (not sure about that tho) there are many more Magdalena's which I've not yet hooked.

Thought I'd post those Magdalena rugs here now in case there is someone out there who hasn't seen them on my blog yet.  I believe the first one was Domestic Zoo which was hooked 2009.  According to the booklet out on Magdalena, there is some controversy as to whether it really was designed by Magdalena.  Yet there is no other 1800's hooker given credit for it.
The following year (2010) I hooked Magdalena's Dog and Crows.  This is a flash photo which does not represent the true colors of the rug.
Moving right along in the year of 2010 I also hooked McCue Eagle which presently resides at my front door.  It pleases me to see that beauty each day I walk thru the door to go for my walk.  Again the blinking flash destroys the true colors ~ it is not that bright.
Magdalena's Dog was hooked in 2012 at home without a teacher, it is a smallish design so was a piece of cake.
Lollipop Bouquet was hooked in 2013 without a teacher ~ well Magdalena's color plan WAS my teacher and used the wool I had.  Honestly I was hesitating doing this piece because there are 66 circles.  YES, I counted them.  But this rug was the most fun and so many colors can be pulled from your worm (noodle) baggies.
In 2014 Magdalena's Farm was hooked in a Barb Carroll class, which is always a delight.  And as always was happy with my rug after her color planning.
Also in 2014 I hooked the Folkart Horse in a smaller size.
Wow, I was on a Magdalena frenzy in 2014 as I also hooked Olde Ducks.
Harvey's Magdalena was a fun piece to hook and was hooked 2015.
It is among the rugs hanging on the wall in this computer room as well as some others.
In 2017 while perusing some of the auction sites I saw a rug listed and knew immediately it was the missing and undiscovered Magdalena Goat rug the family had spoken of (according to Evelyn).  I immediately emailed my friend Evelyn, sent her the link and it was confirmed to be an authentic Magdalena.  Hell, all it took was a quick look at the rug itself to know who originally hooked it.  So this is the Magdalena Goat and I was the first to offer the pattern and hook it in the original size ~ Evelyn also hooked it.
Some months later I hooked it again in different colors and a smaller size and sold the larger rug.  Per usual the real appearance of this brown goat is NOT that bright.
In 2019 I decided since one Lollipop Bouquet was fun, two would be double the fun.  Again, the flash distorts the color and my rug is NOT this bright and white.  So I hooked the Great Granddaughter's Rug, which until it was donated was in the possession of THE Great Granddaughter of Magdalena.
Here is a photo of the great granddaughter Ellen Jacobs donating the rug to the Historical Society of Perry County, PA.
And then another allusive Magdalena rug (of which I'm sure there are more than the goat and this) pokes its face.  I hooked Lititz Hens in 2019 and it is in front of my sink so get to enjoy it every day.  Once again those colors are not white, it is the flash.
Sheesh, it's been since 2019 that I've hooked a Magdalena rug???  Perhaps that is what should be on my frame next as there are so many more to hook.
If you want to learn more about Magdalena Briner Eby you can buy her booklet .  I don't sell the booklet but am sure you can find it on Amazon.
However I do sell the patterns.  And while not all of them are listed on my web site I've probably drawn them for others in various sizes.  So contact me if there is a Magdalena rug you desire.

THROW BACK THURSDAY

It is usually a Friday before I remember that I forgot to post a 'throw back Thursday' photo.  But today I remembered, so welcome to my first throwback post.

This photo is departure day of we three Amigas at Rugs by the Sea 2011.  From left to right is me, Char, and Deb.  It was after that year our friend Char became a Snowbird and we missed her for a few years.  We will be together again this September and think it is time we have another photo taken of us.

IF I remember, maybe I'll take that same tee shirt, Char always has a white oxford blouse and bet Deb has that or similar Life is Good tee shirt too.  Will be fun to see how we've changed.
Below is a photo of Linda & Norma (the two camp organizers), Bev (former teacher), and my friend Evelyn being her normal feisty self.
Here are a few rugs hooked by we three gals in the first photo; have only picked 2 from each of us.

These two rugs were hooked by friend Deb, Peace and Plenty (a Lori Brechlin design sold by Spruce Ridge.
And Hildefern sold by Woolley Fox.  Each of those fronds were hooked using antique paisley.
Char designed and hooked a huge Wedding Rug for her daughter which is even more beautiful in person.  Talk about a "Tree of Life"!!
Char also designed and did a life size proddy of a Bear for their cabin.  She used all the dark bad wool purchased when first starting to collect her wool stash.  She figured why throw the wool away when it could be put to good use in a proddy project ~ smart lady.  I still haven't made mine.
That is food for thought for you newbies who are making the same mistake with thrift store wool we all made.

Most times I didn't take a photo of my rugs at camp but since I've a list of what I hooked when, here are two examples of what was taken to the show that year.

McCue Eagle, an adaptation of a Magdalena Briner Eby design.
E.S. Frost Sheep with Birds and Flowers.
I hooked more than two rugs that year but won't bore you with all of them, just a little sampling from we three gals.

Was fun to look back on this "throw back Thursday".

More Hooked Rugs

Another Magdalena design I hooked was McCue Eagle.  It is at my front door for now, but when 1909 Horse is finished that might be my new 'greeter' rug.  The photo below was taken on the deck in natural lighting.
In one of the books in my hooking library I saw an antique rug with a stag so decided to adapt it to a chair pad.  The shape was intended for a particular antique rocker.
Then wanted to hook a larger rug using different colors for the stag.
In a class with Barb Carroll I hooked Brave Hunter, an antique adaptation and pattern offered by Woolley Fox.  You may find it interesting to note the original antique had a gun instead of an arrow in his hands.
Getting antsy to hook another Magdalena rug I pulled out linen and Sharpie and drew Magdalena's Dog and Crows.  The background is a mixture of various greens but mostly using my favorite High Meadow Green recipe from the Beautiful Wool dye book by Laurice Heath.
Always admiring E.S. Frost's designs drew up and hooked the Sheep design with Birds and Flowers.  I've sold several patterns of this design and have enjoyed seeing how others hooked it ~ here is my version.
The above rugs were hooked during 2010 but also participated in a challenge or two and hooked some purses.  I won't bother you with the small stuff.

In 2011 I hooked a couple Karen Kahle designs; one was Home Tweet Home which quickly sold at a show.
But before taking it to the show enjoyed it for a while.  Here it is on my harvest table with a homemade bird.
Another Karen Kahle design was Tea Cozy, which I still have.  I've thought about dismantling it and doing something else with it since I don't use it as a cozy and it didn't sell at the show.  But am not sure what I'd do with it in that curved shape.  Can't make a purse out of it because the design would be upside down with the roundness at the bottom.
This was the year of the Sincerely Jane Rug challenge held on Yahoo Rughookers.  Photos of participants' rugs are in an old issue of Rug Hooking Magazine.
The reason the challenge was named "Sincerely" Jane is because there  is a book named "Dear Jane" written by Brenda Manges Papadakis.  Brenda documented her journey replicating the 1863 Jane Stickle quilt by writing letters to Jane as she did each block and joined them together.  It is a wonderful read and if you quilters don't have this book on your shelf, it should be.  Included are all the pattern pieces for the quilt.
It is a wonderful read and if you quilters don't have this book in your library, it should be.

Sincerely Jane was a project that could be put aside for a while to work on other things.  Knew the deadline and worked accordingly.  Was in the mood to hook a design I drew for Polly Minick, which was a small part of a larger design.  This is Boy and Dog Parade which was part of Polly's 4th of July design.
I was now ready to tackle scrolls, which until now I'd totally avoided.  There was only one teacher who I thought could help me do it right....yup, Barb Carroll.  I love how it turned out and it is hanging in the living room over my fireplace mantle.  I've sold a few patterns of this but must admit it is a bear to draw.
In the mood for a small fall fun mat it was time to hook Cat in a Shoe by Lori Brechlin; it is a design in one of her booklets.
It is time for lunch then back to hooking 1909 Horse.  FYI, today the droplets of rain in those two spots are still occurring; strange phenomenon for sure.

More Hooked Projects

In 2010 I was still doing shows selling primitive dolls and hooked pieces and once again sold a rug really liked.  One day I'd like to replicate this antique again.
Saw the stag antique in one of my books so just had to make a chair pad.
Shortly thereafter decided to hook a larger rug for the floor.  Think I prefer the gold colors.
Also that year I hooked Magdalena's Dog and Crows.  I have a more correct color version of this without a flash but it is blurry.  So just know the colors appear more bright and washed out than they are.
At a class with Barb Carroll I hooked Brave Hunter which is offered by Woolley Fox.
Magdalena's McCue Eagle was another hooked that year and is presently at my front door.  Ditto what I said about a 'flash'.
Hooked purses were very popular at my shows and here is one that I hooked.  Cannot remember whose design it is and don't have time to research.
The scallop top was attractive so hooked another but with a crow.
Also 2010 I joined a challenge and didn't know the motif or rules until after signing up.  It ended up being an elf and the only thing I could think to do was make a jack-in-the-box style and made as a wall hanging.  But boy there were some VERY creative women who made magnificent pieces.  I'd hoped to sell it for a child's room at one of my shows...nope, still here, lol.
Hard to believe it is July 4th tomorrow.  Hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday.

My Magdalena Rugs

As you regular readers know, In early January I discovered a new Magdalena rug which I've aptly named Magdalena's Goat.

Immediately notified my friend Evelyn who has done the research and hooked all of Magdalena's rugs.  We contacted the auction house where the item was sold just to verify it was a Magdalena and Evelyn asked if she could please hook it first before sharing information on my blog.  Out of respect for that sweet woman I did just that and she hooked and bound the 29 x 35 design in less than a month.  Wow, what a hooking machine she is.

Above is the original and will share Evelyn's rug after mine is all hooked.
The first Magdalena rug I hooked was in 2009 when I decided to tackle Domestic Zoo, the runner.  Since Barb Carroll didn't offer the design (she had Bills Buddies instead) Evelyn suggested I offer it and have sold dozens of the patterns since then.
In 2010 I hooked two Magdalena rugs, Dog and Crows above and McCue Eagle below.
Since I switch out my rugs the McCue Eagle is at my front door at the moment.  It is nice to enjoy the designs of Magdalena and my efforts.
The following year, 2011 decided to hook a small version of Magdalena's Dog.  This is used to decorate my sofa table or harvest table when I want something different to display but not for the floor.

Then there was a Magdalena dry spell until 2014 when I went bonkers hooking Magdalena designs.
Above is Lollipop Bouquet which was a LOT of fun.  Frankly I was dreading all those circles and seems to me there were 66 of them (going to memory) because I counted every dang one of them wondered what the hell I was thinking.  It was a fun fun rug to hook.
Next hooked was Magdalena's Folk Art Horse;
Then Magdalena's Farm;

And Old Ducks above;
And Harvey's Magdalena was hooked 2015, above.  So guess it was about time for me to hook another one of Magdalena Briner Eby's rugs.  There are a couple other designs of hers I'd like to hook one day and should make that an annual event for me.
If you would like to read about Magdalena and the research done by my friend Evelyn, you can purchase the booklet HERE.

Should you want either Domestic Zoo or Magdalena's Goat pattern drawn on Dorr natural primitive linen please contact me HERE and I'll give you what information you wish.

Have a great Sunday.
