Throwback Thursday

Reminiscing past rug camps with the classy and talented lady Barb Carroll thought I'd share some photos from when classes were held in her former Ligonier home.  Here she is color planning a rug for Deb.

Over the years I was fortunate to stay in both of the cabins located on the premises.  One year my roomie Deb and I stayed in the 'Guest house'.

It was quite comfortable and decorated with antiques and hooked rugs ~ some antique rugs and some hooked by Barb.  There was a propane fireplace which we enjoyed if there was a chill in the air.  

In the distance on the left wall you can see the antique rug 3 Bears.  I have always loved that design and it remains somewhere on my 'to hook' list but has yet to make it to the top.

This is the bedroom.

There was a well stocked kitchen with coffee, egg cooker, microwave, breakfast foods, eggs, milk, soda and other goodies always stocked in the fridge.

There was a bathroom to the right of the kitchen.  One year when we arrived we noticed a vintage rug had replaced a print on the wall.  Study that rug and see if you see a well hidden image anywhere.

There was also a deck and this was the scene from the deck.  Deb and I hooked on the deck when it was warm enough.  Originally a swimming pool Barb made it into a Koi pond.

After 'hard day at work hooking' in Barb's home, Deb and I would sit and hook in the living room in the Guest House and enjoy a glass of wine...or two.

Granny Geometric a/k/a Rick Rack Rug

Yesterday's post showed Eric's Rick Rack Rug and I mentioned having hooked one similar but drew it myself.  Here is mine, which is not nearly as artistic or well color planned since I pulled from my worm bags.  I named it Granny Geometric as it reminded me of crochet squares of a Granny Afghan.

Also mentioned the pattern I replicated was from an old book in my library. Decided to search thru my books to find the pattern for you.  Below is the line drawing which can be enlarged to any size you wish.

It was among numerous designs from a book purchased on-line from some source for a few bucks.  You can see it had been retired from a library ~ a book by William C. Ketchum, Jr.

During that morning search also came upon the Nova Scotia design which was Eric's mat pattern I'd admired so much.  That would be the bottom illustration below.  Think it came from a different book during my search.

Okay, I admit that I'm stalling to show in-progress rugs from camp.  Today was filled with 'car pool duties' for my neighbor's kids again, my laundry and feel like I'm catching something.   Yesterday and today I popped Echinachea and as there's no worry about picking up the kids tomorrow I'll be able to sleep better tonight.

My Next Project

As if most of you didn't already guess, it will be another antique adaptation.  This time it is 1909 Horse.  There's a wee bit of a story or two about this pattern.

First it was a very lucky purchase at less than half the cost of the pattern from Emma Lou Lais' web site.  The pattern was among the bargain patterns offered at Cape May during the special Anniversary celebration.  So have pattern want to hook... right?  Now to find a photo of the original.  

HA!  The sleuth in me went on a full out internet search.  I checked Google, Pinterest, Woolley Fox web site, and lastly Barb Carroll's site.  Finally on one of Barb's pages I saw this photo of 1909 Horse in progress and a picture of Emma Lou with someone I didn't know.  The detective work wasn't done yet.  Still wanted to see a picture of the original antique. 

Next I contacted Deb Burcin who built Barb's weebly site and asked who was in the photo with Emma Lou.  She said her name was Nada Lind and kindly gave me her contact email address.   Nada was very accepting of my email, sent me a photo of her finished rug and stated there was a photo of the original in the Hooked Rugs book by Leslie Linsley.

For heavens sake!  That is just one of the many books in my library and didn't think to search thru any of them.  Voila!  Below is a photo of the original.

While there are 10 pattern line drawings in the book mentioned above 1909 Horse line drawing isn't in there; but the photo of the original is.

Thank you Nada for befriending me and giving me permission to post this photo of you and Emma Lou.  In a future post I will share Nada's finished rug.  She is even thinking about hooking this again along with me but has a couple camps coming up so not sure when she will join in or if she will even have time.
