THIS and THAT

To start I'll show you a couple old rugs.  For you chicken rug folks here are a pair of roosters facing off.  Sorry, no date provided but it looks to have some age.

Described as a fat dog, this rug was said to be hooked between 1890-1920.  It measures 33 x 39.5 textiles used are cotton on burlap.

The rug below of fur, feathers ..and a fish, I have no clue about.  But saw it somewhere and loved it.  Is it an oldie or did someone with great skills to make it look old hooked it?  If anyone seeing this knows, please advise.

Switching channels now to homeownership.  You may recall this photo I posted after a large limb fell on the side of my newly shingled home with new leaf guard protection.  Yup, couldn't have happened before the work was done.  Here is the damage.

I called the company who did my roof and gutter work, told them about the damage and asked if someone could drop by and give me an estimate to repair.  Within a couple days the owner did drop by, evaluated the situation and said he'd give me a call with an estimate.

Weeks went by and no call back.  So decided to call a local handyman who has done work in the neighborhood. 

A day or so later the roofing owner finally returned my call and said I'd need new gutters, new leaf filters and cost would be $1,200.  WHAT?????  That's when I told him I'd called someone else since I  hadn't heard from him in so long.

Frankly I didn't believe all that needed to be replaced.  Plus I did have 2 extra leaf filters left over from the original work.  Just in case it did need replacing I went outside and guesstimated the length of gutters and leaf filters that might be required and do my own cost analysis just for supplies.  The figures below are prices found on Lowe's web site.   

~ 10' brown gutters = $16

~ gutter hangers per each = $3

~ 16' Atlas gutter guard = $50

Yesterday the handyman dropped by and repaired the area using the same gutters and guards to the cost of $50.  Mark straightened out what was bent, tightened hangers of the gutter to the house and placed the bent shingles back over the guards.  He did explain that when it warms up the shingles will fall back down in place.  But they've been frozen in that bent upward position for weeks. 

Yup, $50 compared to $1,200.  Am pleased with the results and particularly the price.  As Lauren will probably comment..."welcome to homeownership".

RUG SHOW

 A soiled but sweet primitive cat, 38 x 38.

This brown horse rug doesn't have a date either but you can see by the way it is worn it has some age.  Dimensions are 25 x 41.

A geometric with central star and scallops.  Some may refer to those shapes a tongues, shell or maybe even swag shapes.

An oval in rectangle given a date of 1930.

This floral below is dated between 1860-1870 and measures 32 x 53.

Sadly there's no information to share about this double baskets of flowers rug.

Black horse (19.5 x 25.5) hooked early 20th century.

This rug with blocks of animals was hooked early 20th century and I like it.  Size is 36 x 40.5.

More cats cats said to be hooked between 1870-1890.  You've probably seen it before somewhere.  Dimensions are 33.5 x 53.5.

I'm not so crazy about this next rug but it was hooked late 19th century with cotton and rags.  Puts a different spin on hit and miss and using up left over textiles tho.

And the final rug photo which I wish had been taken straight on vs. at an angle.   I like this deer and house rug which was dated between 1880-1910.  If it was a straighter photo I might be interested in hooking it but this would be a nightmare to draw out because of the angle.

Back to pulling loops on my own deer rug now y'all.  Happy hooking.

Let's Have a Rug Show!

Thought I'd start off with something for Kelley.  A cat rug with stars and scallop border.  Said to be from late 19th century hooked using wool and cotton.  At a later date I learned this is not an antique but a design by Kathy Morton.

Not wanting to show favoritism, here is a dog hooked in the 19th century.  Measuring 28 x 39 it comes from Sturbridge MA.

Colonial houses with well in foreground.

Colorful birds from Ephrata, PA measures 27 x 44 and said to have been hooked between 1850 - 1900.

A hooked dog rug with a faux 'hooked' braided inside border.  Thout that was very interesting and very well done.  Tap on the photo to get a better view.

Berries in corners and center with hit and miss background 19th century.

Of course I have to show some horses after showing a cat, dogs, birds, etc.  Late 19th century 23 x 40 from Pennsylvania.

Found this on Pinterest and can't believe it is in such wonderful shape.  Must have been museum stored for centuries.  It is a 12th century Girona tapestry  depicting the month of April.  Would make a nice hooked rug and conversation piece.

All that is missing is a truly primitive and naive hooked pot of flowers with small houses.
