RUG REVIEW OF 2024

This post is to share pics of rugs hooked in 2024.  The first finished rug last January was an antique adaptation of Reclining Lamb which was started early November 2023 in a class with Caroline Twigg.  After returning home I reverse hooked most of the wool in the body of the sheep so the rug wasn't completely hooked until January 14th 2024.  And later bound.

The next adaptation was Lone Stag and Star.  

For some reason I became enamored with a hit and miss antique rug displayed at Sauder ~ Star and Hearts which I had to hook.

Fox frequent my yard often and see them sometimes drinking from the water bucket I keep outside for deer.  Fox are beautiful creatures so when seeing the 1922 antique version it was the next pattern on my frame. 

By now you know what makes my heart skip a beat ... a horse of course.  So Running Horse was next.  And for those of you wondering, the red in the horse's neck and mane was in the original antique.

You wouldn't know which antique rug this next adaptation was taken from unless I showed it to you, as it looks nothing like the original.  Coming up with a name for it was difficult as I thought the original was as ugly as a junk yard dog.  Yeah, part of a phrase taken from Jim Croce's song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown".  Must admit it's not my favorite rug.

This next one I did enjoy hooking and am pleased with the finish.  It's another antique adaptation named Bird on Tree Stump.

Dog with Basket was the project taken to Cape May and color planned by Lucille Festa.  Lucille used every piece of my wool taken to camp.  I kept telling her to make suggestions from her wonderful selection but she continued to use mine.  Of course I still did buy some of her wonderful overdyed 'dirty muddy' wool.   The wool used in the dog I'd never have thought to use but Lucille did and think it looks great.  All the wool were odd pieces taken just in case they could be used for something.  

Well this next one seemed like a good idea at the time.  It, too, is an antique adaptation, not one of my favorites either, but it did turn out quite like the antique.

Although hooking on the sunflower started around March 2024, I didn't finish it until November so it would be ready as a Christmas gift to my DIL.  Unfortunately I neglected to take a photo after it was stitched closed.  Cathy, my DIL, was over the moon happy with this as one of her gifts and reminded me that she LOVES sunflowers.  Guess that was a hint for future gift giving.

Guess you are surprised not to see Magdalena's Animal Parade as another finished in 2024.  Me too.  But it will be finished soon and will be among those shown next year in the 2025 rug review.

ISO the Right One

Once again I'm looking for the one antique which makes my heart skip a beat to put on my frame next; and what better way than to do a rug show.  The first one is 8 point Stars which was hooked 19th century and measures 38 x 48.  This doesn't make my heart skip a beat but it is a nice looking rug.

The primitive Rooster and Hearts measures 28 x 30 and comes from the estate of Alva Hood Angle.  However she wasn't the hooker as the initials MR are hidden top right just under the heart.  That is unless the Rooster's name was Mr. 😄.  Sorry, but he doesn't do it for me either.

Look at this old shirred antique mat below.  It is beautiful, old but still isn't "the one".  Click on the photo to enlarge and see more of its beauty.

Happy is the Sailors Bride measures 34.5 x 48 and owned by a private collector.  I've considered hooking a Hutchinson sailor type rug since I had a relationship with an Icelandic sea Captain.  But I wasn't a bride so  this wouldn't work.  Maybe one where the sailor has a girl at every port which may well have been the case with my fine Icelandic Captain, lol.

Believe it or not this Potted Plant hooked rug caught my attention for a certain spot on the wall near where I hook.  I recently gave my son a vintage Johnnie Walker liquor store display which had been electrified and made into a lamp.  I've had it for decades but knew it would look great in his 'man cave' .

Since I have an OTT light behind me for hooking I didn't a light on the end table using up valuable space.  So it seems bare and feel the need to have something on the wall to fill that void.  Called to asked my son to take a photo of the lamp so you could see what I gave him.  (his room is still a work in progress, notice the insulation).

This rug below might do it for the spot.  The original measures 18 x 36 and was hooked 19th Century.  I wouldn't make mine that big just want it on the wall near me and beside the window.  

Normally I choose horizontal rectangular designs for the floor and wall, but this vertical design would be great in THAT spot.  Yet I'm looking for something that reaches out and grabs me.  So let's continue with the rug show, shall we?

Recently found on an auction site is the Deer with Pond and Scrolls.  It measures 30 x 48 and this is the faded front.

This shows the repairs on the back a well as the bold colors of the scrolls.  I suspect the rug was in an area where it received a lot of sunlight to fade the colors that much.  Would have liked to see the true colors of the deer.

I  like this Running Horse said to be  hooked in the1800's, it measures 15.5 x 24.  Might make the cut the next time.

Red Floral rug with zigzag oval band and triangle corners.  It measures 16 x 34.

Another vertical design I like is Flower with Birds hooked 1879.  Presently Kimm of Sheep Underfeet (blog) is doing an adaptation of the design.

Guess I can give you one more rug for a round number of 10 and make it a black cat.  The rug measures 23 x 37.

What a difference a day makes.  Yesterday it was 92 degrees and today it is 63.  Happy Hooking.

Passing Away Time

I'm really not into hooking the piece on my frame (the sheep) but want something to fill my time.  Not into binding my last rug either, but not that bored I'd actually run the vacuum and dust...gawd forbid. 😉

So think I'll look at some antique rugs and share with you.  I'll start off putting a smile on Kelley's face with Two Cats from 1900 found in Pennsylvania.  Think those are your colors Kelley... so what'cha gonna do?

This was an interesting rug and sadly tattered from age since it is truly a beauty.  From the script I'm guessing Nancy Shippee was 38 when she hooked this rug in 1851.  Except for the edge it looks in good shape.

Below is a rug hooked by Annie Stevens great great grandmother...uh, think I've got that right.  Lucky her to have a treasure a family member hooked.  Too often I go to the thrift store and see quilts and worn hooked items given away by the 'throw away' generation their family members have hand made.

A snowflake design below was hooked circa 1900 on burlap and measured 34 x 40.

This Flying Horse rug below is awesome.  The information was it was hooked between 1880-1890  an measured 361/2 x 37.  The horse has a blanket and the border is a geometric top and bottom.  But something of this speaks to me as a cave drawing.

Here is a primitive scroll rug being sold by Sothby's, sorry, no date or size given.  But what a great way to use up lots of left over worms and not have to worry about the nick picking of detail.  Hmmm, maybe that is what I should be working on.

Okay, one more then the rubber meets the road and decision on what the heck to do the rest of the evening.  It won't be vacuuming.  Hey, this is another great primitive design to use up those odd nicely primitive colors.  Personally, I love the drab dull colors of antique rugs.  But can also see this with brighter reds, greens and yellows as well.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  And so is life.  I'm thankful for every day I wake up even if every step or turn in bed hurts.  Not sure if it is all due to the osteo arthritis, but think the right leg/hip/back pain is due to the sciatic nerve.   Have had my share of struggles in life and lately here with trees, flooding, etc.  But there is so much joy that I LOOK FOR and make myself happy.

I change channels on the TV on depressing news, get off FB when there is negativity and generally choose to be happy.
