ANTIQUE RUG SHOW

Isn't is fun to look at rugs hooked by other folks?  When attending a rug camp I always look forward to the rug show.  Also enjoy the 'throw down' to see who is hooking what and if there is a pattern I'd be interested in myself.  And, of course I love antique rugs so let's take a look at what I've found lately.

Here's one with animals and flowers.   Hooked late 19th to early 20th century.  I kinda like this but could get bored with the curves.  But heck, I've hooked lots of circles in my time and never got bored with those.  Maybe I'd do just one row of curves both bottom and top border.

A lovely way to use up all those left over strips.  Look closely at the rug below which I like because it looks old and worn.   You could use up lots of the wool you don't know what else to do with as it would help create that vintage appeal.  They would make a wonderful geometric rug and not worry about what color goes well with the one next to it.  It works!

A shorebird and the auction house didn't provide a date.

Lauren will probably love this Pug Rug dated 1898 ~ the 1 must  have really faded out.   Might be something she'd like to adapt to give her DSO or for herself.

I don't particularly care for this cobalt blue floral (hooked mid 20th century).  The reason I saved it was because if the flowers were removed it would remind me of the 'no broadcast' tv signal back in the day.

A very well preserved hearth rug circa 1875.  Dimensions are 28.5 x 67.

A landscape hooked late 19th-early 20th century. 

Another landscape which has a pixelated look so wonder if it is wool crewel work instead of hooked.

OH, I don't have a cat or horse rug yet so guess I can't stop yet.  This next one should cover all those requirements ~ it has a cat, dog, horse, rabbit and even a goat.

RUG SHOW OF OLDIES

I love this rug of fishermen and wish I knew more about it.  All I know is that it's Canadian.

The next photo provided on the site was the back of the rug with this name.  If anyone knows something about this please let me know.

An attractive geometric was listed for $5,400 on Charish.  It measures 24 x 48 and dated between 1920-30.

Here is a closer view of the textiles.

Saw this wonderful Canadian hooked rug of a full moon and fox somewhere during my searches but don't have date or dimensions.  This would be an awesome rug to hook if I'd not already started the 1922 Fox adaptation.

A red house and yellow bird; also appears to have two sliver moons in the background.  Seems to have the appearance of a split screen of night/day and perhaps that's why the two moons.

This bird on branch and 2 baby birds is rather understated with the colors.  I think someone with more color imagination than me could make this into a beauty.   

Found this cat rug this morning and said to be hooked between 1880-1920.  Colors are still vivid and of course it has been well preserved since it's on a frame and not walked on.

This airplane themed rug was hooked early 20th century and I wonder if it was done for a child's room or an adult who had an affinity for flying?  

The wood horse carved box (1840-1900) could be an inspiration for a hooked rug or applique piece.

I love this antique hooked rug below.  Don't know the exact age or dimensions but do know it is old.  Whoever hooked it did a fantastic job on the eye of the horse as if it was running away in fear.

Some ideas for you to use up your leftover strips.  A sweet 15" round pad and how it was covered in the back.

Probably from the same hooker here is a hit and miss idea for using up strips and measures 17 x 28.

As you are aware, Maud Lewis' paintings have been adapted to hooked designs.  Here are three of her paintings which were recently sold and I've got the sale prices.  The deer scene 12 x 14 on masonite sold for $22,240.

The covered bridge painting sold for $25,960 and measures 12 x 16.

Maud Lewis cow 12 x 14 sold for $30,680.

Still haven't decided on what to hook next but each time I post about geometric hit and miss a brief thought of doing that floats in my mind.  Happy hooking.

LAST RUG SHOW of APRIL

Can't believe the month of April went by so quickly.  For sure this area received all of April's showers in the last 3 days and the ground feels like a sponge when walking on it.  Anyway, onto the show...

Recumbent Dog measuring 25.5 x 38 hooked 19th century.

A horse with decorative border dated1890-1920.

Just a sweet cat with blue circles; no date or dimensions.

A geometric with a size of 24 x 42 dated 1880-1920.

A Frost sheep design measuring 29 x 48 and dated what appears to be 1890.  Some of the scrolls have drastic color changes.  

The above Frost design is interesting because when I hooked my Frost Sheep and scrolls with Barb Carroll she told me that years ago scrolls were hooked with changes of color around the scrolls.  And now found one like she was referring to.  Below is my  hooked rug color planned by the Queen herself, Barb Carroll.

An apple a day...well you know the rhyme.  Three apples said to be hooked early 19th century.

Identified with name of A Rice, circa 1850-75 is a wool stitched mat on linen piece measuring 13 x 14.  I found this incredibly interesting as who would have 'lawn ornaments' of cannons on the front yard, lol.  Obviously someone who would stitch what they knew.  I enlarged it so you can see the stitches better.

Call me crazy but I really find the rug below interesting too, maybe it's the colors or the rug hooker's thought process for placement of motifs?  Dunno, I just find it interesting.   An abstract rug dated early 20th century measures 31.5 x 39.5.

And I'll end with this box turtle mat measuring 10 x 12 to commemorate the first sighting of one of my returning box turtles which I saw today.  No date on the mat so don't know if it is really an antique.

I've only the hand stitching of the cotton binding to do on my Stars rug and there will be none on the pile when my horse rug is all hooked.  But that won't be happening any time real soon.

Have You Ever Bought on Impulse?

Thought so, me too.  Sometimes that impulse purchase ends up a winner and sometimes I wonder why I did it.  Case in point, this antique incomplete geometric rug.

I saw it listed a couple years ago on ebay and can't remember what I paid but must not have been that much or I'd probably have thought twice about it, lol, but then maybe not. 

The listing was fully disclosed; I knew it was on burlap (knew burlap is not a good foundation) and was aware there was no extra wool, it is obvious its a very narrow cut.  Why oh why did I buy this when I know that I hate hooking narrow cuts?

Well, for one thing I've always wanted to own an antique rug but figured I couldn't afford to buy the whole thing...har har har, I'm beginning to sound even more crazy as I continue to type. 

For another thing I'd inherited a bunch of narrow strips of wool and figured there would be plenty on hand to finish the blocks and use up some strips.  The wool you see in the photo is a pittance to the huge bag of various colors I have.  Problem is the white is either too white, too dark, too wide a cut so not enough white on hand to finish.  The only amount in a color appropriate is to the left of that small pile of real white at the top.  Actually it is so right on value it is hard to tell it is even there.

I just pulled it out to look at it again to see if I was willing to finish those few blocks.  I've had it stored in a plastic bag with some sweet annie and out of the light.

And for those of you wondering, at the bottom it says #115 American Heritage but cannot make out the wording at the top except the first word looks like 'Mildred'.

So pals, if you've ever purchased something on impulse and you're still kicking yourself, you aren't alone.
