RUG SHOW TYME

I'm still working on the geo/floral so there's nothing new on my frame.  Haven't made any wonderful purchases to share so I'm still scrolling thru antique rug photos looking for the next one for 2026.  The rug below I saw August this year and sadly no information was provided about it.  Appears to be a dog on top of the 2nd structure from the left.
Gagetown buck and deer at Farm pond in winter.  No date was provided but it measures 38 x 40.
Definitely not my cup of tea, is this rug of moon shapes and stars.  Description says it is a yarn sewn rug circa 1900.  Hey, only reporting what the auction house said.
This next one is kinda cute and cozy.  Would be an easy draw and hook for winter.  Again no info.
Love this rug and may have even posted it before, but saw it and decided to put it in show.  Just look at that blotchy background, oh my!
Here's something for you chicken loving folks.  The red roosters rug below also had no info provided but it sure does look old to me.
And another for you folks, a white rooster.  Again no date or dimensions.
And this one below just might make the cut for my next shiny bauble.  Does anyone know anything about this rug?  I'm thinking it is a legit design to hook and just might do it.  But you know how fickle I am and just might change my mind once the geo floral is done and before this one is drawn.
Happy hooking everyone.

Surprise!

It's another rug show.  Maybe something will inspire your creativity.  This old floral (39 x 40) was given a date between 1850-1899.  It must have been stored away or placed in a low or no activity area as it maintained it's lovely vibrant colors.
A view of the back and repair of one area.
Next, a geometric circa 1920 measuring 23 x 38.
I think this landscape is endearing with it's childlike naïve charm.  Said to be hooked early 20th century with dimensions of
19.5 x 35.5.
There's something about Lions, I've hooked 5 rugs with a lion in them.  Of course they don't hold a candle to my love for horses.  Anyhow, this rug has a date of 1857 hooked in it and measures 34.5 x 43.
And a closeup of the hooked date.
A recent find and still listed for sale is this nautical 8 point star.  I'm guessing the side border designs are diver down flags.  No date was provided but size is 36 x 52.
Here is a view of the back.
I like this rug with flowers and scrolls, but not enough to hook it.  Think I'm more attracted to the color combo and scrolls than the flowers.  Dated 19th century (24 x 46.5).
Okay, gotta put a horse rug in here.  This one has squirrels (fuzzy tailed rats) in the corners.  Date of 1898 hooked in the rug and measures 26 x 39.5.
Happy hooking everyone.

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

A stag hooked 19th century with dimensions of 28.5 x 34.  This rug has everything fun ~ a stag with blotchy colors, flowers in the corners and hit and miss of sorts in the background for interest.
This 19th century hooked dog rug has several borders but the scalloped inside border gives it character.   Size is 28 x 46 and still for sale I think.
The rug below is an antique but cannot recall the date as that info was lost when my flash drive became corrupted.  I keep the photo around tho, to remind me to hook it one day.
Cats and birds hooked late 19th century or early 20th.  Ha, bet you paused to hunt for the birds, didn't ya?  I did also.
Deep water sailor, a Hutchinson style hooked rug, no date was provided.
A floral hooked rug is not in my future.  But for you who might, here is a basket of flowers hearth rug, circa 1890.  Measures 31 x 61.5.
Abstract or floral?  I wasn't sure how to label this next rug.  Size is 21 x 34 and would be a no muss no fuss, easy peasy hook for something to do.
The one below is definitely a geometric hooked early to mid 19th century.
A framed hooked cat (14 x 16) but with frame it measures 19 x 21.  Said to be hooked 1900-49.  Appears the cat is sitting on a tree limb.  Wonder what is hiding behind that wood?
A view of the back.  There appears to be a puzzle used as support behind the foundation.
Another runner or perhaps a hearth rug of a dog, stars with a hit and miss background.  I can't figure out what those other two motifs are.
Today we will have a heatwave reaching 37 degrees.  Yesterday morning when I woke up to turn the temperature up on the thermostat this is what the temp was outside.  At 7:27 a.m. it was 5 degrees outside, and that was after the sun had come up.  Wonder how low the temps got when it was dark o'clock?  FYI, stage 2 heat is when it is auto switched to propane heat from heatpump.
That's it for this show, now to pull a few more loops on the Animals Great and Small.  Happy hooking.

READY FOR A RUG SHOW?

I've found a few new rugs, or at least new to me.  First is a cat with a Greek key style border.  Dimensions of 26 x 38.5 were provided but no date.  It appears to be old with my limited knowledge and not looking or feeling it in person.
Good Luck rug is from the estate of George Fernald of Chatham, NH.  It measures
24 x 36, again no date provided by the auction house.
This one titled TOON INN is from estate of Kathrine Pease.  Public domain is questionable since the auction house gave it an 'around time' of mid 20th century.  But oh my did it intrigue me.

Inside the oval, on the left, appears to be a fisherman on a pier?  Artistic perspective is a little off on that me thinks, but the hooker was capturing an event.  There is also a boat in the water yet there are two people who seem to be walking in water around their ankles.  This is such a fun landscape, floral, and apparently a memory rug.  With all its quirkiness I think it is sweet.
A round 28" shirred mat.  This was the only photo available so am guessing it is the front and severely worn.  So for you newbies who want an antique that would be a great practice piece and easy to draw.
A lovely landscape I copied from Edyth O'Neill's blog.
Here's the dog rug I recently showed you as a pattern I drew for someone.  Decided to put it in  a 'rug show' post in case someone does a search for 'rug shows'.
country cottage landscape dated 1890.   Appears to have been well worn.

A 19th century embroidered dog.  Would love to know the story about this piece.  Why is there a pocket or pockets on it?  Was this a project by a young girl to practice her stitches?

A floral /geometric hooked between 1900-1920.   I wonder about this one too ~ is the W M just a happy accidental part of the design or did the person have initials of WM?
And last, a horse hooked in the 19th century.  Must say I'd have worked a little harder to get the tail end of the horse to look right and eliminate or make smaller, the flowers on the sides.  Some show horses do have bobbed tails but this one looks a little strange.  So we'll call it a naïve primitive hooked rug, lol.
In other news ~ I had intended to submit my hooked Mother With Fishbowl photo to ATHA in time for the "Family Portrait" issue.  The deadline was June1 but I lost track of time and was 3 days late.  Not sure it will appear in the issue and will understand if it isn't because of my lateness.

Happy hooking, gardening, stitching, etc.

VINTAGE RUG REVIEW

Take a look at some of my recent finds of old rugs.  Soon there will be more birds flocking to our feeders with the anticipation of spring-like weather.  Here is a rug with 5 birds which was said to be hooked early 20th century.
A wonderful geometric which was in a photo of a group of three for auction.  This was the best (in my opinion) and no other info was provided on any.
Red horse with thistles in the corners.  Again no dimensions or date provided.
Floral geometric.  At first glance my thought was the end motifs were stylized bee skeps, what say you?
Prancing horses hooked
late 19th century and measures 40 x 51.  I think the curled design around the horses is to represent a rope... me thinks, lol.
Oh I love this stag, and if I'd seen it earlier this might have been my choice to hook instead of the last stag project.  But I would have chosen a different color for the flowers other than pink.  Hooked 19th century and measures 28.5 x 34.
Hen and chicks circa 1900; 20 x 34.5.
That's it for now, time for lunch (homemade vegetable soup) then pull some loops.  Have a great day!

Vintage Rugs to Enjoy

Found several rugs up for auction the last few days; seems it's either feast or famine.  Up for auction once again is Magdalena's Black Dog circa 1885.  Size is 35.5 x 45.5 with the starting price at $1,500.  So if you are wanting to replicate the rug, here are the colors which are probably faded.  No view of the back was provided since it is on a frame.
A beautiful floral yarn sewn shirred rug measuring 29.5 x 62.
For the feline folks here is a cat with hit and miss border.  Said to be made 1900 and measuring 48 x 58.
I really really like this geometric, again from 1900.  The design and colors appeal to me, it measures 18 x 36.5.   I think would be a suitable hook along idea at some point.  Should go quick with hand torn or real wide cut using selvage edges, worms.
I haven't figured out this rabbit and forest rug yet.  Obviously the rabbit is on snow.  But it looks strange to me... so is this to be a view from a porch or from inside the house thru a window?  Why not have the snow as the ground and eliminate those rectangles on each end?  It measures 28 x 44.
Look at this gorgeous yarn stitched Horse rug.  Said to be made early 20th century and measures 22 x 39.
Just look at this detail, my fingers hurt just imagining the delicate work  done to make  it.  Give me a Hartman hook and wide cut wool anytime; but it is a beauty.
It's difficult to define the shape of the deer but I like this. No date or dimensions.
Peacocks are beautiful birds but I've never had the urge to hook a rug with that image.  Unless of course it was a grungy primitive and not this prissy style.  But for those of you who like tidy, clean and crisp  ~ not there'
s anything wrong with that, its just not me.  Double Peacocks measuring 29 x 46.
I have to post this wonderful antique rug Kimm (Sheep Under Feet) wrote about on one of her blog posts.  She had the pleasure and honor of seeing some antique rugs up close.  This one intrigued me as she said the cream color was hooked with corn husks.  CORN HUSKS!   Unbelievable and guess that proves back in the day they did have to make do.  I'll bet it crunched under the weight of a foot tho.

I do understand the concept of using corn husks because I've done basket weaving, put the reeds in water to soften and make them pliable for bending.  But have never had the pleasure to see a rug like that.  Thank you Kimm for the post.
My sleep and eating pattern will be a little off for a few days since the setting clocks forward an hour.  I went to bed a little later than normal hoping to make the adjustment easier.  Oh well, you'd think after all these years I'd have figured it all out.  Even when I had my boy Ben, he still wanted to go to bed and wake me up same time mind/body time for a few weeks after the changes.

Happy hooking.
