Antique Rug Show

Who doesn't enjoy a little eye candy in the form of rugs hooked in the past.  That is, after all, how I became interested in learning how to hook.

Blow is a Floral in an Oval hooked early 20th century and measured 28 x 39.   I enjoy the oddities of old rugs and they often conjure up questions I'd like to ask the hooker.  The one below has the right side of the oval design cut short.  Am guessing she realized if she hooked the oval like the left side she wouldn't have enough room for the border.
The 1886 Folk Art Soldiers caught my eye and wonder what country they represent.  I don't know any other information.
The simplicity of the yarn hooked rug below I find endearing.  It was said to be hooked 1890 with yarn on burlap ~ from the Textile Museum of Canada.  Love that soiled blotchy look.
The Boy and Dog rug below was listed on ebay and sold for $1,295 even in the tattered condition.  It was hooked in the 1800's and measured 19 x 38.  Believe I've posted this before but it still captures my heart.  If you tap on the photo you can see the person hooked the snow in blocks.
Another version of a 'horse trainer' rug.  This one was located in South Paris, Maine and measured 15 x 35.
Another view but further away.
Here is "Stubbs Horse Trainer" an antique adaptation I hooked in 2017.
My oh my, sure do love this Stars and Diamonds rug below.  It was said to be hooked early 19th century and sadly don't know the original dimensions or where it was located.
Happy Friday and happy hooking everyone.

One Down and One to Go

Finally bound is the delightful Magdalena find from an auction site.  You long time followers have already read the story about that in a previous post.
I love the wool yarn used for the whipping.  It was purchased from Ali Strebel (Kindred Spirits) at a class in Cape May a couple years ago.  I purchased a few other hanks but this worked best for this rug and around Stubbs Horse Trainer.  Believe it or not there is still a smidgen left of that hank.
Today I started hooking one of the feathers in the Gossip rug and hope it turns out like my 'mind's eye' sees it.  If not, you know I'll pull loops and re-hook.  I've never had a problem with reverse hooking.

The feather was started late this afternoon so not much got hooked. Today's activity was supposed to be grass cutting.  I had good intentions, even purchased gas for the mower. But that is far as the grass cutting went.  As Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) would say....the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Have a great evening.

Plans For My Day

Plans for the day are to sit and hook all day ~ only stopping to walk Ben or eat lunch.  So not many steps will be logged onto my fitbit today.  But twice this week I had over 12,000 steps days.
There is still lots of hooking to be done and more than be accomplished in one day.  As there aren't any pattern orders I will plant myself on the sofa and hook.
This rug is only 48" but it got to the point where the weight on one end was causing the frame to drop down and the rug was dragging on the floor.  Since is was so weighty on one end decided to pulled out my 16" Townsnend Orbiter.  I tend to forget I own one since it is in collapse position and standing in a closet.
Above is the clutter I am surrounded by; it is convenient and more efficient to have those bags of worms by my side but it is rather unsightly.  They have helped greatly in each and every block along the border and the clothing on the trainer himslf.  The clean space between the wool strips is where I will be today.

It is rainy and dreary here today and a wonderful hooking day.
