No Hooking so A Rug Show

I'm not hooking by choice, I can't use my left hand to even hold a strip of wool.  At first I thought Friday's left hand discomfort was the occasional flare up of osteoarthritis.  But I was in such pain all Friday night and yesterday that I began to wonder if by bracing my fall by extending my left arm might have fractured my wrist.

To make it clear, before the fall I was experiencing more back and joint  pain.  But at 1 pm yesterday decided to go to the ER and get some x-rays.  I spent 5 hours in the ER, they gave me Tylenol for pain and a wrist/thumb brace to stabilize the hand.  Did learn the x-rays showed no fracture BUT also learned it  might take 5 days for a break to show up in a part of the wrist.  My hand has swollen up even more over night and have used ice to try and help reduce swelling.  

Okay, enough of that crap.  Lets see some rugs.  

This is a soothing 3 flower rug with hit and miss border.  It measures 22.5 x 40.  The purple is neutral in this piece, just as Barb Carroll told me.

A black and white dog with claw type toes, stripe background and flowers.  It measures 27 x 47.

A view of the back so you can see the original colors.  And it appears the purple and pink flowers are the ones which faded most.

That isn't the first dog with claw like toes as I hooked an antique adaptation similar.  It was hooked with Barb Carroll.

Now you feline lovers have a double treat and have a very clear photo of the alternative textiles to hook the one below.  Cats rug measures 20 x 41.  BTW, I'm typing one-handed using the one finger method as the left hand is useless anyway and have an ice pack on it.

Rooster and Hen was given a date of 1920 so well in that public domain timeframe.  The dimensions are 22.5 x 38.5.

Berry Bush measures 29 x 29 and dated 1898.

The Geometric rug from 1920 measures 27 x 54.

Cute Cowgirl holding reins measures 24 x 37.5 hooked late 19th century.  Provenance is sale from horse farm and resort.

I keep eyeing Cottage House with Apple Tree and birds but have the 

Magdalena waiting to be on linen.  The rug was hooked 1920 with dimensions of 30 x 42.

Friend and follower Jennie saw this Turkey rug and thought she'd send me a photo.  Just so happened I hadn't seen it; thanks for thinking about me Jennie.

The grass needed cutting this past Thursday but it rained.  Then with  Friday's pain it couldn't be done, spent the big part of my Saturday in the ER and is Sunday and still cant use the left hand as the pain is excruciating.  But as the saying goes...."this too shall pass".  Hope your weekend has been better than  mine.

Having Fun with Ned

In case anyone hasn't noticed from previous posts, I adore Barb Carroll and her hooking style.  Classes with her are cherished and never to be forgotten.  So hooking Ned has been a journey in memories of lessons learned and am taking time hooking Ned and having fun.

Yeah, am disappointed more didn't get hooked on Ned before posting this picture and almost thought of putting an antique rug show instead. 

Notice the mane and hoofs... Think I mentioned previously the mane was strips from my worms.  Well, the hooves are also and different colors.  I recall Barb saying..."It (whether it be antlers, collar, hooves, etc.) must be different and special".  So that is what I'm trying to do with Ned.  

The second hoof from the left is a piece of wool Barb gave me to use for the collar on CHUM (below).

Here is a full view of Chum.  I'm certain it the same woman hooked both Ned and Chum.  When I replicated the pattern there was a round circle on the dog's collar as if it were a tag, bell or maybe just a metal ring. There was also a ring under the chin of Ned so maybe I'll have to hook that in Ned as well.  As you can see I covered it up with the halter. 

Am trying to channel the child in me that Barb has helped me release in my hooking.   Or at least with Ned I've allowed myself to be more free.

My Other Rugs Hooked with Barb

Seemed only fitting for me to use purple text again when talking about Barb.  In the previous post you saw the first rug hooked with Barb, which was Kinderhook Basket.  The next rug hooked at camp with her was Woodland Deer, another Woolley Fox design under the category Keeping the Past Alive.  You can see the purple in numerous leaves spread about the trees.  

I actually used Barb's idea when hooking a design from one of Barb's books.  The pattern was called July Cabin and instead of flags on the trees I changed to be more like the trees above since I so loved how it turned out.  Here is that rug, the book is titled American Folk Art Rug Hooking and has 18 projects inside.  

You can see that I really got into the 'purple' stage by making a purple moon.

An E.S. Frost Sheep was a 'must have' for me and there were a couple versions but the one with scrolls is the one I knew Barb could help me with.  Even tho scrolls were very intimidating it seemed my home needed to have one.  So figured if anyone could hold my hand thru the job it would be Barb.  Doesn't this look rich and old with the worn spots?  It hangs over my fireplace.

Next rug hooked at a Barb class was Brave Hunter; yes, another Woolley Fox design.  Now here is another story you may find interesting.  There were two of us in class who just happened to be hooking that same design.  Each turned out way different due to our individual wool color choices taken.  Here is mine and I can see the purple even without tapping on the photo to enlarge it.

In that class was sweet Deb Burcin and based on the colors she took to class this is the prize that Deb hooked.  Deb says this is one of her favorites not only because it was hooked in Barb's class but because the deer/moose was hooked with purple and green and the antlers were from an orange plaid skirt.

The following year I hooked Lion in the Woods, a pattern gifted me by my friend Evelyn Lawrence.  It is an antique adaptation offered by Port Primitives.  WHAT??????  Could it be we missed putting purple in this rug?  I enlarged it and don't see any purple.  Maybe I'll have to pull that rug out and hook some in somewhere.  

Oh Deer was the rug I chose to hook in class with Barb.  I'd seen Barb's version while at her camp and got bitten by the bug.  That happens to me a LOT.  Case in point is that while at Barb's I purchased wool to hook Olde Hearts, another Woolley Fox design.

The following year it was Magdalena's Farm on my frame with Barb.  I love Barb and all of Magdalena Briner Eby's designs.

During the year I designed an antique adaptation called Chum, which I offer as a pattern.  It is my feeling the same person who hooked Ned is the person who originally hooked Chum.  So it was Chum which was hooked with Barb the following year.

And this year I'm working on Simple Gifts which is still in progress and will keep you updated.  My only regret is that I didn't attend a Barb Carroll class earlier.  IF you are interested in having a class with Barb you can contact her HERE.  Don't know her schedule but if you contact her I'm sure you will hear back.

Happy New Year ! ! ! !

Wishing all of my blogger friends a very Happy, Healthy New Year. Frankly, if I have my health, family and friends I AM happy. Okay, okay, add a hook in my hand and that adds to the happiness.

Although I didn't get the sheep rug finished yesterday (my first deadline), nor today, at least I can show you my accomplishments of 2015.  And like Julie of Primitive Heart strings said, it will be my first finished piece for 2016.  Thanks Julie for making me feel my glass is half full instead of half empty.

So now the first rug of 2016 will be the glorious sheep rug.  So guess my past year was filled with lots of happy hooking.  Since my computer crashed in 2015 and where my list of hooked accomplishments was listed, that is why I couldn't remember the order in which these were hooked.  Am also wondering if any mats were missed.  Sadly I've also lost the historical list of rugs hooked since 2003 as that list was on the old computer.  Now I have an external hard drive as well as my flash drive so that there are back ups.

Wishing you all a very happy 2016 and praying to God our world changes for the better.

Hooked Projects I've Done Since Cape May 2014

Each year when it is time to gather up all the rugs for the Cape May rug show I've hooked during the year, I start with my class project for the previous year at Cape May.  Last September my class was with Ali Strebel and Ali Katz was the rug on my frame.

Naturally there was an interim project for me to work on until Ali got to me but for the life of me cannot remember what that was.  Oh, that may have been the Man Cave Rug and would have taken just background wool to hook .....maybe.  Anyway, it was finished in time for the show and thankfully way ahead of time for Christmas

These won't be in order as they were hooked by any means, but do keep a running list during the year and list them each time one is finished. Here is Harvey's Magdalena with a flash and a photo without.

Another Magdalena design called Olde Ducks.  Not a flattering picture it was taken on the back deck in natural lighting.

A Woolley Fox design called Hannah's Hen and residing on my school marm's desk.

I designed this Magdalena style crow in a small size and contimplated making it into a pillow to join the pillow below but decided to keep this as a mat instead.

Below is a design by Betsy Reed which I made into a pillow.  I used Betsy's technique for the edge trim.

This year also did two antique adaptations.  One was a small runner I named Cherries and Candy Stripes and wanted for my harvest table.  It is quite smaller than the original antique but oh how I loved the dirty stripe border.

The other antique adaptation is Chum and I believe it was originally hooked by the same woman who hooked Ned.  I contemplated hooking regular dog paws on him but Barb thought the original whimsy of the toes or toenails should be included.  I'm glad I listened to her and this rug was a favorite of Kris Millers in the show.  Oh, Chum is bigger than Mr. Cotton tail so I must have really reduced the size.

As I mentioned, they are not in order....Mr. Cotton Tail was hooked in time for Easter this year and is a design by Brenda Gervais.

A small project was in my future once again and I hooked two of these Black Kitten mats which were an antique adaptation.  Hooked one for me and one for a friend which will be a Christmas gift.

Hester was a free pattern insert in a fall issue of Primitve Quilts and Projects and was a design by Lori Brechlin.

Just in time for Cape May I'd finished Hobo Joe, a design by Lucille Festa.  Instead of making him a cut out decided to hook the whole piece.  Lucille thought he looked great. 

Although you've seen all of these along the year as I was working on them, you can see them all together now.  Not many big pieces but smalls are fun too.
