RUG SHOW

A 19th century hooked rug with deer, bunnies and birds, the dimensions are 31 x 40.  Love that blotchy background.
Perhaps a pet duck?  Wouldn't be my choice of subject but someone cared for it enough to hook it.  Said to be hooked between 1850-1900.
Colorful rug of fern leaves; no date or dimensions.
A horse in pasture hooked early 20th century per the auction house.  Size is 30 x 42.5.
While no date was provided, I feel confident this dog rug is old.  It measures 19 x 40.
This little lamb was hooked on burlap between 1900-1949.  Measures 11 x 19.5 and only the motifs were hooked, not a background.
A Canadian chair pad.  Wonder if it was hooked with nylons.
A perfectly stitched cat and tongue applique mat.  I wouldn't want to do it, too much detail work, but it is lovely.  Look at that wonderful hand work.
Primitive birds and flowers on burlap dated early 20th century (24 x 39).
A lovely Frost Sheep with scrolls.  I love it despite and because of it's blotchy and different colored scrolls, border and background.
I love the one I hooked at class with Barb Carroll doing the color planning.  Once I was petrified to do scrolls and now I love them.  Here's mine below.
There ya have it, another rug show put to bed.  Have a lovely weekend.  According to local forecast I'll be hunkered down with a few days of rain.  And you know what I'll be doing ...happily hooking on something.

Antique Rug show

Center flowering tree with deer in center, horses at corner and puzzle piece background.
Faded hooked family and pets from 1860.
The auction site said this was a dog and puppy from the 19th century but I cannot see the puppy very well.  The pup appears to be behind the dog.  Perhaps the underside of the rug shows the dog more prominently.  Dimensions are 25 x 37.
Home, bees and bee hive measuring 19 x 37.
It isn't considered an antique since it was hooked in 1950 but the design is an old Frost Sheep with scrolls design on burlap.  It is considered vintage and it IS lovely with that blotchy background I like.
I hooked the Frost Sheep with Scrolls in a class with delightful and talented lady Barb Carroll.
Landscape with Hen and Chicks with little use of color but does the job.  No date or dimensions were given.
Home with 4 hearts in corners; hooked between 1880 and 1890.
Don't know the actual hooked date but this commemorates The Last Dog Train to leave Lower Fort Garry 1909.
Kittens in a Basket located at the Bloomsburg Antique Show (thanks Kathleen).
And here is a close up of the back with more true colors.
Seaside Cottages at the Beach was the description on the auction site.  It measures 18 x 35 and was hooked mid 20th century.
Happy Hooking.

Rug Show Time

It has been a while since having a rug show on my blog and figure it is about time for my readers to see something a little different than the same ol' same ol'.
Above is landscape with black folk and their critters, rug was hooked mid 20th century.
Above are two bunnies, butterfly and flora from Manchester, NH. No date given.
Love the blue cat above and that blotchy background makes my heart skip a beat.  No provenance at all was provided for this beauty.
I have always wanted to hook an antique rug with neutral colors and this just might be my target.  I love doves and am not longer afraid of scrolls.  Heck, those scrolls are easy peasy tho.

As previously mentioned on my blog, Barb Carroll took the fear of hooking scrolls from me when she mentored me with this rug.  Yeah, you regular readers have seen this one before but it is my love and hangs over the mantle of my fireplace.  (p.s. I offer this pattern for sale).
Speaking of scrolls, below is an antique rug which was recorded as "American School of of Folk Art Floral" and from an estate of Woodbury, CT.
Below is a close up.
Enjoy your evening everyone.  I know Jo Wick and her group are enjoying themselves their second day of camp with the magnificent Barb Carroll.  If you would like to take a class with her you can reach here HERE.

My Other Rugs Hooked with Barb

Seemed only fitting for me to use purple text again when talking about Barb.  In the previous post you saw the first rug hooked with Barb, which was Kinderhook Basket.  The next rug hooked at camp with her was Woodland Deer, another Woolley Fox design under the category Keeping the Past Alive.  You can see the purple in numerous leaves spread about the trees.
I actually used Barb's idea when hooking a design from one of Barb's books.  The pattern was called July Cabin and instead of flags on the trees I changed to be more like the trees above since I so loved how it turned out.  Here is that rug, the book is titled American Folk Art Rug Hooking and has 18 projects inside.
You can see that I really got into the 'purple' stage by making a purple moon.

An E.S. Frost Sheep was a 'must have' for me and there were a couple versions but the one with scrolls is the one I knew Barb could help me with.  Even tho scrolls were very intimidating it seemed my home needed to have one.  So figured if anyone could hold my hand thru the job it would be Barb.  Doesn't this look rich and old with the worn spots?  It hangs over my fireplace.
Next rug hooked at a Barb class was Brave Hunter; yes, another Woolley Fox design.  Now here is another story you may find interesting.  There were two of us in class who just happened to be hooking that same design.  Each turned out way different due to our individual wool color choices taken.  Here is mine and I can see the purple even without tapping on the photo to enlarge it.
In that class was sweet Deb Burcin and based on the colors she took to class this is the prize that Deb hooked.  Deb says this is one of her favorites not only because it was hooked in Barb's class but because the deer/moose was hooked with purple and green and the antlers were from an orange plaid skirt.
The following year I hooked Lion in the Woods, a pattern gifted me by my friend Evelyn Lawrence.  It is an antique adaptation offered by Port Primitives.  WHAT??????  Could it be we missed putting purple in this rug?  I enlarged it and don't see any purple.  Maybe I'll have to pull that rug out and hook some in somewhere.
Oh Deer was the rug I chose to hook in class with Barb.  I'd seen Barb's version while at her camp and got bitten by the bug.  That happens to me a LOT.  Case in point is that while at Barb's I purchased wool to hook Olde Hearts, another Woolley Fox design.
The following year it was Magdalena's Farm on my frame with Barb.  I love Barb and all of Magdalena Briner Eby's designs.
During the year I designed an antique adaptation called Chum, which I offer as a pattern.  It is my feeling the same person who hooked Ned is the person who originally hooked Chum.  So it was Chum which was hooked with Barb the following year.
And this year I'm working on Simple Gifts which is still in progress and will keep you updated.  My only regret is that I didn't attend a Barb Carroll class earlier.  IF you are interested in having a class with Barb you can contact her HERE.  Don't know her schedule but if you contact her I'm sure you will hear back.

Have a great evening everyone and happy hooking.  BTW, I hook summer as well, for my hooking isn't just a winter project.  With summertime chores it does curtail the amount of time spent with a hook in my hand but enjoy the journey anyway.
