Antique Rugs

I went antique dealer looking today (on-line) and found some new to me antique rugs.  Well, who knows, maybe I've seen or even posted them on my blog before but they grabbed my attention again.  Don't think I've posted this one tho.  I was intrigued by the colors, the scrolls and that background.  Scrolls intrigue me but was intimidated to hook them. 

Here is an antique Frost Sheep with scrolls which I wanted to hook even with the intimidation.

Then finally biting the bullet hooked this E.S. Frost Sheep rug on this pattern page.. just scroll down.

And those who like mother hens and chicks thought this was cute.

The one below is probably not an antique.  But it is winter after all, I love it, love the colors and the folky look.  If anyone knows who hooked it, who designed it, etc, I'd LOVE to know.

And found this folk art dog today and I love it.  Strange thing is that with my Rottie Memorial (in #3 cut) and my sweet Shadow Memorial in #8 cut, both which were realistic looking, this dear folk art dog says it all.  He was LOVED!

As I'm typing that realize this is a great future blog post and you just may see this beautiful folk art dog again.

My homemade vegetable soup is done, salad made and time to get of'n this machine, eat, and get back to hooking.

More Dyeing

Thought I'd start off first with an adaptation of an E.S. Frost Rug that I hooked.  While perusing photos came across it and remember how much I liked the colors and blotches of different colors in the background.

After doing the faux paisley dyeing yesterday there was a little red dye left so thought I'd use it up.  Actually, I had to add a little more of the Egyptian Red dye because what was left wouldn't have been enough to dye the wool I grabbed.  Soaking here are parts of a skirt (or maybe a jacket?) and a wool pocket.

And this is what it looked like after being over dyed with the red.  Now it can be used with that white toned down.

My friends Lynne Fowler and Eric Sandberg are starting a hooking group in Onancock, Virginia.  It will be held the second Monday of each month  at Ker Place.  There is no cost, but the Museum would appreciate it if one would join or make a donation.  Please bring a lunch.

Also, beginners are welcome but there will not be any formal class however, they will take beginning supplies.  If you are a newbie you can learn by just watching what other hookers do.  A great way to be exposed to different rug hooking equipment also, not to mention getting away to be with other rug hookers.

Lynne asked that I post this on my blog to spread the word.  So if you are local to the area or are up for a drive the second Monday of each month, you will be welcomed with open arms.

Happy Valentine's Day

Hope all my friends have a special event planned for their significant other ~ or rather your significant other has a special event planned for you.

My significant other is Ben but he can't have chocolate (bad for dogs) but I'll give him a chew bone which will please him even more.  And of course he will walk around the house fretting on where to hide it so no one will steal it.  Then he will lay beside it to keep a watchful eye on it for extra security.  Eventually sometime today he will whittle that rolled raw hide bone to a nub.  But that is a ritual with him so maybe part of the enjoyment is just looking at it in anticipation.  Sorta like how I get when I know that I'm going to a rug camp..... the excitement of anticipation.

For those of you who have just recently started reading my blog thought I'd let you know more about Big Dog Hollow.  It measures 27 1/2 x 33 1/2   and is the pattern that I chose when Kathy inquired if I'd be interesting in doing a pattern swap.  She wanted one of my Frost Sheep designs  (the one with birds and flowers) and I chose her Big Dog from her web site.

Most of the background colors are comprised of these wools but also use some of my woolie worms sprinkled around ~ some extra blues, grey, a tan and orange texture and anything else which might make it look like 'that is all she had'.

The house I used 3 different colors of tan textured wool and various darks for the roof.  The house outline has 3 different shades of red/orange and they were woolie worms as well.  I feel so good when I can use up some of the leftovers.  Hard to believe that when I first started there was no wool stash here at all.  And now?  It is out of control and need to take a couple days and just organize it all.  To prove it to you, tomorrow I'll share pictures of my massive stash and you will all gasp.

And now the right side, as you can see there is still much for me to hook

Frost Sheep Finally Hanging

The  E.S. Frost rug has been bound and ready for hanging for weeks but finally got around to putting it over the mantel of the fireplace today.  Guess the limited time has lit a fire under 'me bum' to finish some unfinished tasks before I leave for Barb's.  Tomorrow is the last day here to finish the other items on my 'to do' list.  I can see my edge is a little wavy and guess I must have been guilty of packing a little heavy in some areas.  But hey, this is my rug and not to be juried.  Besides, our foremother's rugs bring in hefty prices and they probably had wavy edges too.  So figure I'm in good company.

I'm hoping to find time or take time to post something tomorrow but this may be my last post until I return home from camp on the evening of the 24th.  Guess time will be the deciding factor in that.


Not to worry animal lovers, my beautiful boy Ben will be well taken care of when Bruce arrives to watch over the house and care for the Ben.  I like it much better when my pets can stay in their own surroundings during my absence.  GAWD, isn't he handsome?  Yes, he is strong but he is one gentle loving boy.

Want to tell you that I am in a frenzy.... a child waiting for Santa... it is almost time to go to Woolley Fox with my other gal pals.  We gals have been friends for years!  Three of us first met thru making dolls in a doll club in Maryland.  Then we met Char at Cape May at a rug camp and she fit right in our group.  So we are a band of hookers travelling together whenever we can.  Matter of fact, here we are at a Delaware  hooking gathering at my place in Delaware in 2011.


On the far left is me and dearly departed Shadow.  I just wish I had a picture of the five of us girls together which wouldn't get me crying.  I miss you Shadow. OMG, how can it be that it can be 10 months after she is gone and am still sobbing when I see her vibrant?

Okay, anyway, moving on....I'm planning on taking lots of pictures at Barbs so plan to entertain you when I return.  So the picture above is us gals who will be at Barbs.  ...... to be continued.........

My Hooking Year in Review

I was just thinking back on what rugs I had hooked this year ~ the year from last May to this upcoming May.  Last May I drew up this Frost Sheep with scrolls and took it to a class in May with Barb Carroll, so it was finished within the year.

Meanwhile, I finished up this Karen Kahle Tea Cozy, as that is what I was working on the first evening at Barb's (for something to do) and also worked on in class until it was my turn with her.

Sometime during the year I started working on the Sincerely Jane Challenge rug and completed it in time for the deadline and hopefully you'll see several other challenge participants' rugs in an upcoming issue of Rug Hooking magazine.

I also joined in the Sensational Seasonal swap on Yahoo Rughookers and hooked 2 of these snowman mats (one for my swap partner and one for my dear daughter-in-love) because she collects snowmen.  Next was a Spring Swap and did this for my partner.  And I've completed my summer mat for my new partner but can't show you that since it isn't time to send it yet and it is supposed to be a secret until it arrives.

Next was the Log Cabin and Sheep rug which is an adaptation of July Cabin which is a design offered by Barb Carroll in one of her books.  I changed the trees, changed the direction of the smoke to make it smaller and generally made it into what I wanted to hook and see.  Oh dang, the flash really washed out this picture.

Then in November I drew out and started the other Frost Sheep design with flowers and Birds; this too has been completed but remains to be bound (workin' on it tho).

After that was finished being hooked think it was then Magdalena's Dog which went on my frame.  This guy is on my kitchen antique harvest table and makes me smile each day.

Whew, didn't realize I'd hooked so many things during the year.  The 2 chicken Daleview Farm, a pattern by Polly Minick but with 3 chickens originally, this was also hooked and bound.

Also hooked this Candle Mat for my soon-to-be neighbors as a housewarming gift but they haven't moved in yet so it is still here but done.

OH!  I almost forgot the cute elephant design by Robin, and that is the one I just most recently finished..... how could I almost forget that?

Oh goodness, I'm now editing my post because I saw a picture of a rug which was started last August and had it finished to take to my October show last year....so add at least one more rug to the count for the year between May 2011 and May 2012 (coming up).  

Plus, In reading back to my May 10, 2011 post I had just finished this Home Tweet Home design by Karen Kahle. Goodness but I was one busy girl last year.

And if that wasn't enough, I hooked and lined a couple eye glass cases for a hooking well-known as examples for her upcoming classes as well as making 40 flower pins for me to take to my shows.  Uh, I think that might be all I hooked, but if I remember something else I'll be sure to post it. 


And yesterday I posted the UFO that I'm presently working on.  I'm hoping to have it done before leaving for Barb's in May because I want to start the bumblebee chair pad to give me something to hook the evening before class starts and until it is my turn with Barb.
