Rugs Hooked in 2019

The year 2019 is coming to a close so thought I'd give you a rug show of the rugs I hooked this year.  First one of the year was Lititz Hens which is an adaptation of a Magdalena Briner Eby design.
Still having the antique adaptation bug hooked Early Farm Scene a Frontier Homestead pattern.
Finally a UFO which had been hidden for years, the Paisley Stair Riser was finally finished instead of being trash.  It was designed for a narrow cut and I was determined to hook it in nothing less than #8.
Next was an adorable pattern named Cat Nap designed by Kelley Belfast and too adorable to pass up.  So that was next on my frame.
Back to the antique designs of Magdalena....  When seeing the Great Granddaughter of Magdalena was donating the original hooked rug to the Historical Society of Perry County knew it had to be on my frame next.
Below is my attempt at an adaptation of that wonderful rug originally hooked by Magdalena.
Have always heard and even repeated, these words:  "Use it Up, wear it out, make it do or do without".  That was the slogan from the War Advertising Council of 1944.  That was a time when most resources were being used for the war effort and conserving in the home was promoted.
Then it was time for Cape May rug camp with teacher Miller who I always enjoy.  The pattern to be hooked was Oh Glorious Day, a design by Lori Brechlin and pattern sold by Spruce Ridge Studio.
In November Kris Miller was my teacher again and took a design named Friendship Bells by Folk Art Landing.  There was a little creative license taken and this is the result.
Was looking for something small to hook until I could decide on my next project so picked one from my stash, a design by Tonya Robey called Winter Bloom.  It is all hooked but still have the remainder of the whipped edge to complete.
That next major project happened to be and antique adaptation I've named Mighty Whale.  And yup, it was all hooked AND bound before the new year.
Am anticipating completely getting the whipped edge finished on Winter Bloom before going to bed tonight and I'll have a clean slate for works hooked in 2019.

And the Consensus Is......

The pattern Early Farm Scene is all hooked and have already started binding it.  Yeah, that's a first....to start binding as soon as the hooking and steaming is done.  But I felt naked ~ there was no pattern ready on my frame to hook.  Couldn't make up my mind since I've patterns in my stash and some needing to be drawn yet teasing me to hook them.  Anyway.......

As for Early Farm Scene.....want to know how many voted on which color?  RED had 7 votes.   PURPLE also had 7 votes but one vote doesn't show up in the comment section because it was a personal email.   And there were 2 votes to BOTH.

Wondering which color I chose?  The purple won out for a few reasons: the purple was same density/intensity/value in the circle other than the points which were darker.  There was plenty of other red spread throughout the design but still another hint of purple at the bottom right flower.

BTW, this wasn't a test as it was a question I had for myself during the hooking of the rug.  Wasn't sure which color to go with even tho the purple was hooked first, but when it was done and saw the rug completed I knew the answer.  So that is why teachers have told me to "not pull out loops until you are further along".
My next blog post will be about the 'outline and fill' concept.  There really is more than one way to do that.

Happy Weekend and Happy Hooking.

Early Farm Scene

Yesterday I'd planned to post an update of this rug but told  myself..."just another few loops", or 'finish the other flower first".  Always an excuse to hook a little more so the post never got made.  Well, here it is.
Already I've started pondering what to hook next.  Running thru my cranium is an antique adaptation I'd fallen in love with a few months ago and also a Kelley Belfast design.  I've proven to be a very fickle hooker so who knows what will go on my frame next.

My friend Deb is enjoying the class with Cindy Irwin and hooking one of her purses in the evening and a rug in class during the day.  I'm sure Deb will provide great photos of what I'm missing and when she does I'll share them with you.

Early Farm Scene

This antique adaption is a Mennonite rug hooked in the 1900's and found in Lancaster, PA.  It has definitely been my happy place to fall during the prep and subsequent doctor procedures.  This is what it looks like this evening.
The size of the pattern is almost visible at the bottom of the linen.  Frontier homestead  did not draw the pattern exactly as the original antique.  So I've taken liberties from her interpretation to make it closer to the original using the restraints of the linen.

It will be somewhat smaller than the original and will be just fine with me.  Besides, I'm enjoying working on this piece albeit making changes.  Rug hooking is my comfort.

If you scroll down you can see a picture of the original antique.  Have a great evening and one day soon we just might really see spring to stay.
