Rug Hooking Chit Chat

I've started the binding process on Over the Moon.  This time I'll whip the edge with black wool yarn.  I do it in a two-step process ~ wellll, maybe you'd call it a three-step process.  I roll the foundation forward, clip then whip with a heavy cotton thread and then do the final whipping with wool yarn.  Although it might  seem double/triple work it makes it easier for me and have a more consistent edge after the whipping.  

Don't you just love those little clips??  Those were purchased a few years ago from a fabric store along the quilting wall.  But am sure you could find them on-line too.

Good news for me.... I sold a sizeable Magdalena Goat hooked rug listed on a Facebook page.  Didn't get the price it should be valued at but a price I'm happy with.  

After I first discovered the Magdalena Goat on an auction site I saved a photo and kept track of the auction prices.  Magdalena's family said there was a Goat rug but it had never been discovered until 2017.  It was fun to watch the incremental increase in price slowly until someone knew it WAS a Magdalena Briner Eby rug.  Then the price sky rocketed immediately.  This is the rug which I hooked and just sold; hooked it Magdalena's original size of 29 x 35, with the wool whipped edge it was a tad bigger.

Also hooked it in a smaller size and different colors to give folks a choice of colors to think about when buying a pattern, this one I kept and have on my wall.

And, just so you know, there is a new pattern on my frame.  

OOPS, you can't tell what I'm working on?  Oh dear...guess you'll have to wait until I have more hooked for you to see what it is 😁 .

Follow-Up From Thursday's Post

In case you're wondering what my hooked rugs of those shown on Thursday's post looks like, here are the ones I've hooked ~ Cats Meow.

This is the photo where I first saw the rug where it was on a log cabin wall.  Later learned who the owner was and contacted her.  Although ownership an antique rug does not qualify as copyright, thought it would be nice to get her approval.

I've hooked two E.S. Frost sheep, this one and one with scrolls.  Mine was hooked with the penny circles, like the original but I sure do like how Melinda Cole hooked hers (scroll down to next post to see).

Below is the original Frost rug with fringe.

The newly discovered Magdalena Goat I did hook twice.  The first one hooked as close to Magdalena's original as possible using what I have.

Then thought maybe showing another color palate might make the pattern more interesting to folks so  hooked a smaller size in a different color.

And here is the original Magdalena Goat.  

In Evelyn Lawrence's booklet Magdalena Briner Eby, she mentions a rug dealer recalling several rugs with goats in addition to the one on The Farm rug.  And finally January 17, 2017 I happened upon it listed on an auction site and immediately sent Evelyn a link.  Evelyn then contacted the auction house.   It was fun watching the price increase after the first jump when someone else recognized its importance.  It was so much fun to be a part of that new Magdalena discovery.  Here is Evelyn's book and you can order your copy HERE.

The only other rug on the previous post I hooked is Cherries and Candy Stripe.  As soon as I saw the original knew it must go on my frame....and so it did.

Here is a photo of the original antique; you can see I decided not to use a yellow aged wool in the stripe.

There is a new rug on my frame (tease) and a rug which needs binding.  You will see the reveals one at a time later.

FLASHBACK THURSDAY (Updated)

This flashback Thursday is debuting some patterns I've drawn for other people.  Unfortunately not all pattern buyers have sent me a finished photo.  So if you are one of them and don't see your rug here, please take a photo of it and send it to me ~ obviously it isn't a requirement 😉  but would enjoy seeing your version and share it with others.

The rug below is an antique adaptation I named Cats Meow and was hooked by Sue Swank.  Sue took a some creative license and added a few additional critters to fill in empty space.  Good job Sue!

I've sold numerous E.S. Frost Sheep patterns and here are a few of the Frost's version with birds and flowers.  First one is hooked by Lisa Halverson.

This one was hooked by Kathy Clark of Briarwood Folk Art.

Melinda Cole hooked this colorful version below and like how she chose to do hooked triangles making it less fussy and much easier for her I'm sure>  I like how it turned out ~ Nice job Melinda!

Another color palate of the E.S. Frost design was hooked by Susan Foley.

Susan Traughber is a huge fan of Magdalena Briner Eby and she hooks the original huge version of all her designs.  When I first discovered a new original Magdalena Goat rug on an auction site she had to hook it.

Susan decided to hook another for her other adult child since they both loved the design so drew another for her to hook.  Here is the second one, would you hook a rug twice???

Someone else liked the new Magdalena Goat discovery and it was hooked by Kathy Applegate.  

Susan Traughber asked me to draw another Magdalena rug The Farm.

A neighbor admired Susan's work so much she decided to hook a rug to surprised him.  So Harvey's Magdalena was in the works and a very appreciative young man.  Susan I'd say you are one great neighbor and hook beautifully too!

Lisa Halverson asked me to design a horse rug for her.  I did a couple sketches and she approved this design.  Look, she's almost done, just a little more background to do.

Then Lisa decided to do a little lot of tweaking by pulling out all that background to follow her heart.  This is Patriotic Rider finished with a background similar to some Warren Kimble designs.

Country Cottage is an antique adaptation I drew, this one was hooked by Pamela Gunn.

Linda Scheffler also ordered the pattern and hooked the one below; nice job ladies.

I hooked an antique adaptation of Cherries and Candy Stripe, posted it on my blog and Pam Gunn ordered it.  Here is her version.

Floral Theorem was another pattern I drew for Pam.  After seeing her rendition and learned she used mostly #8.5 but some #8 I might be tempted to hook it myself.

Lisa Halverson loves hearts almost as much as she loves horses.  I drew this antique adaptation I call Hearty Heart because of its size. 

She also requested I draw this 1931 Hearts antique.  Lisa visited my blog  to see the partially hooked one and sent me a finished photo.  Love the mix of colors she used in the hearts and background.  It is much warmer than the original.  Thanks Lisa and great work.

Another antique adaptation Lisa hooked is one I named Hearts and Penny Flowers.  And look at that lovely heart hanging on the lock of her antique cabinet which compliments the heart theme.

Actually Lisa has hooked many of my patterns and would love to get finished photos of those too.  So Lisa if you're reading this I'd love to get a photo of the one above, Doves & Basket, Hearts-A-Plenty, Horses and Tree, and probably not started yet (because it is garden time) is White/Grey Horse with Scrolls.

Will save the Domestic Zoo photos for another blog post.

LITITZ HENS

Am calling this design by Magdalena Briner Eby "Lititz Hens".  Sorry more hasn't been accomplished on it since the last posting, but such is life.

In case you are a new visitor, the dimensions of this pattern is 19 1/2 x 40.  Neither this rug nor Magdalena's Goat, previously hooked by me, appear in this book.  But if this isn't on your rug hooking book shelves it should be.  If you wish to order a copy you can contact Kathy Wright HERE.

If you missed Magdalena's Goat I hooked this the original size (29 x 35) which was close to colors Magdalena used to hook hers.  

And this smaller size of 22 x 26 was hooked in different colors  just to give prospective hookers color ideas.

Okay, with the 'such is life' comment above, I was without heat for 24 hours.  Being a 'glass half full' type of person, am thankful the temps weren't those of the previous week.  Last week with soaring winds and temperature in the teens it could have been much worse.

Thankfully it is warm now and getting ready to have a bowl of chili to warm my insides as well.  Happy Saturday.

Finally Hanging and a Shock

Was contemplating what to post since my Snowman isn't done, haven't gone back to my Star Geometric from rug camp and binding of the Horses and Hearts rug isn't finished yet.  So decided to show a picture of this room where I finally hung a few more smalls.

Top left you will notice the recently hooked Donkey at the top and previous small horse pieces below.  Next right is the wonderful Kinderhook Basket which was color planned with Barb Carroll. 

To the right top of that is the small version of Magdalena's Goat with the antique adaptation Spike below.  I will talk about other side of the room in a second.

The two green birdhouses sitting on the dough-box came from Cape May and the little mat was hooked by Tonya Robey.   The hooked heart pillow and heart footstool were also purchased on eBay from Tonya.

That primitive Annie doll stuffed with rags is one I made and wearing a pair of my son's shoes from his youth.  Annie is sitting in an antique doll highchair.  The antique school desk I've had as long as the dough-box and it moved a few times between Delaware, Maryland, to California and back again.

 Starting on the left side top rug is Harvey's Magdalena, next an antique ceiling tile, which looks out of place and hooked antique adaptation Chum.  Both the antique tin and Chum need to be replaced with other rugs.  That is an antique grape wine press which has fake grapes in it and also has several thousand miles of travel in its history.

Now for the shock to me.  When I downloaded the photos I saw that orb on the chair which my boy Ben would curl up in.  Immediately upon seeing it I burst into tears.

Here is one of many old photos of Ben, he is laying in that chair.  He sure didn't look comfortable to me but he would come to the room and lay in the chair often when I was on the computer.

Yes, that orb brought me to tears but believe it is an indication his spirit is with me.

Getting Ready

The 'gathering' has begun and it is being collected in my office near the garage door.

Haven't packed my suitcase yet as I wanted to print out the 10-Day Weather Forecast  for Cape May to see what will be needed.  It looks to be a good week.  I almost feel guilty for being thankful Florence didn't come upwards along the east coast.  Poor folks and animals in North and South Carolina are being battered, some deaths, and will take a while for them to recover.

Okay, moving on to lighter topics.....

I weighed myself this morning before breakfast and am 125 pounds.  Always want to see how much weight I gain at camp and then upon coming home work at getting back to that weight again.  I do love the food there but choose to not eat the red meat or pork.  My favorites are fish (particularly the salmon) and chicken if it is baked ~ no fried chicken even tho I hear it is delicious.  Also yummy is their corn pudding and delicious homemade yogurt.  

In the photo above you can see 9 rugs rolled up, that is the number of rugs completed since last year's Cape May camp.  I'm not done with Lady the Donkey yet so she isn't among the rolled up rugs.  But will take her to work on until Lucille gets to me.

Last year at Cape May I started On the Loose with Cammie Bruce, a design by Bev Conway.

When it was finished I drew and hooked an adaptation of a dog who I named Spike.  I'm hoping my friend Evelyn will take hers as she started hooking it at Cape May last year.

Also hooked a smaller version of Magdalena's Goat.  The first larger one true to the original size was hooked similar to Magdalena's.  But the second smaller one thought I'd show folks a different color palate.

At Cape May last year I was lucky enough to purchase 1909 Horse pattern (by Emma Lou Lais) at a great price.  It seemed to hook fast since it takes no time to finish a block and before you realize it the whole rug is hooked.

At Ocean City, MD last November I started Primitive Horse which is a pattern by Lib Callaway that I'd had for some time. That pattern seems to be the rage now so decided to pull mine out and hook it.

In an April class with Eric Sandberg I hooked this Nola Heidbreder's Flower Power design. 

Next, itching to replicate an antique chose a design from the Kopp book which I named Radiant Flower.

With Cape May looming closer, was feeling the pressure to hook the "Sheep at the Beach".  It was a pattern so generously given to each student at last year's Cape May rug camp.  This is the design drawn on Monk's cloth, except there were no exterior lines.  I drew those to not exceed beyond that to ensure room for binding.

This what I designed.  It will be fun to see how others hooked their pieces and will take pictures of all of them to share with you.

And the last rug completed since last September is Stars and Diamonds antique adaptation.  I hooked the sheep in short spurts while concentrating on the adaptation.

Will have my iPad with me so I'm only an email away.  Not sure how successful I will be posting newly created blog posts while I'm gone but will try.
