Magdalena Briner Eby Rugs I've Hooked

Friend Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) did a blog post and mentioned me and the Magdalena rugs she is going to show at some venue.  While I might have hooked more Magdalena rugs than her (not sure about that tho) there are many more Magdalena's which I've not yet hooked.

Thought I'd post those Magdalena rugs here now in case there is someone out there who hasn't seen them on my blog yet.  I believe the first one was Domestic Zoo which was hooked 2009.  According to the booklet out on Magdalena, there is some controversy as to whether it really was designed by Magdalena.  Yet there is no other 1800's hooker given credit for it.
The following year (2010) I hooked Magdalena's Dog and Crows.  This is a flash photo which does not represent the true colors of the rug.
Moving right along in the year of 2010 I also hooked McCue Eagle which presently resides at my front door.  It pleases me to see that beauty each day I walk thru the door to go for my walk.  Again the blinking flash destroys the true colors ~ it is not that bright.
Magdalena's Dog was hooked in 2012 at home without a teacher, it is a smallish design so was a piece of cake.
Lollipop Bouquet was hooked in 2013 without a teacher ~ well Magdalena's color plan WAS my teacher and used the wool I had.  Honestly I was hesitating doing this piece because there are 66 circles.  YES, I counted them.  But this rug was the most fun and so many colors can be pulled from your worm (noodle) baggies.
In 2014 Magdalena's Farm was hooked in a Barb Carroll class, which is always a delight.  And as always was happy with my rug after her color planning.
Also in 2014 I hooked the Folkart Horse in a smaller size.
Wow, I was on a Magdalena frenzy in 2014 as I also hooked Olde Ducks.
Harvey's Magdalena was a fun piece to hook and was hooked 2015.
It is among the rugs hanging on the wall in this computer room as well as some others.
In 2017 while perusing some of the auction sites I saw a rug listed and knew immediately it was the missing and undiscovered Magdalena Goat rug the family had spoken of (according to Evelyn).  I immediately emailed my friend Evelyn, sent her the link and it was confirmed to be an authentic Magdalena.  Hell, all it took was a quick look at the rug itself to know who originally hooked it.  So this is the Magdalena Goat and I was the first to offer the pattern and hook it in the original size ~ Evelyn also hooked it.
Some months later I hooked it again in different colors and a smaller size and sold the larger rug.  Per usual the real appearance of this brown goat is NOT that bright.
In 2019 I decided since one Lollipop Bouquet was fun, two would be double the fun.  Again, the flash distorts the color and my rug is NOT this bright and white.  So I hooked the Great Granddaughter's Rug, which until it was donated was in the possession of THE Great Granddaughter of Magdalena.
Here is a photo of the great granddaughter Ellen Jacobs donating the rug to the Historical Society of Perry County, PA.
And then another allusive Magdalena rug (of which I'm sure there are more than the goat and this) pokes its face.  I hooked Lititz Hens in 2019 and it is in front of my sink so get to enjoy it every day.  Once again those colors are not white, it is the flash.
Sheesh, it's been since 2019 that I've hooked a Magdalena rug???  Perhaps that is what should be on my frame next as there are so many more to hook.
If you want to learn more about Magdalena Briner Eby you can buy her booklet .  I don't sell the booklet but am sure you can find it on Amazon.
However I do sell the patterns.  And while not all of them are listed on my web site I've probably drawn them for others in various sizes.  So contact me if there is a Magdalena rug you desire.

RETIRED after 16 YEARS

This rug has been a work horse for 16 years at my kitchen sink.  The wool whipped edge has been done twice and is showing worn signs again.  So think it is time for Eat Crow to retire.  This is a design by Anne Hallet, I love and it will miss it at my sink after all these years.
That photo was taken tonight so you can see it is safe to use rugs on the floor.  There have been times when I've spilled something on it but since wool is very resilient have taken it immediately to the laundry room and cleaned it up.

First thing I do is use a towel to step on and absorb whatever was spilled.  Then using warm water and a bit of mild soap wash the spot.  Then turn it upside down and let the wool dry.

This is the replacement rug ~ Lititz Hens which is a Magdalena Briner Eby antique adaptation.  It measures 20 x 40 so is a bit larger than Eat Crow.
Lititz Hens will mellow even more with its use and only hope I'll be around another 16 years for this one to retire.  Meanwhile I'll enjoy these two 'new kids' in my kitchen.  Happy hooking.

Did ya Miss Me????

Have wondered if I'd be missed if I stopped blogging as so many others have done.  Before leaving for Cape May though I'd not be able to post photos on my blog from camp did a pre-saved post and planned to hit send from camp.  Turned out I couldn't remember my password and Google wouldn't send.  Thus, no posts until now.  But this is what I'd saved............

If you are reading this blog I am already at Cape May but saved this post before leaving home.  Reason is most times Blogger will NOT let me or anyone post photos on iPad.  So Google, there's more than one way to skin the cat!!!!

On Wednesday there will be a rug show open to the public at the Chalfonte Hotel and these are the rugs I'm taking to show.
Star Geometric (above), an antique adaptation drawn by me, designer unknown.
Lititz Hens, an antique adaptation drawn by me and the designer was Magdalena Briner Eby.
Above is Early Farm Scene an antique adaptation drawn by Frontier Homestead and designer unknown.
I thoroughly enjoyed every loop pulled on the Great Granddaughter's Rug above.  It was drawn by me and designed by Magdalena Briner Eby.  Below is a photo of the great granddaughter of Magdalena and the great granddaughter's son, who recently donated the prized possession.
Below is a rug drawn by me using the wording from the War Advertising Council of 1944 to conserve resources.  Always thought it was a phrase from struggling farmers and mostly used by quilters and rug hookers.  I'd be totally wrong when doing a search on the phrase.
An adorable winter piece from the design of Kelley Belfast and drawn by me is Welcome Snowman.
Also hooked in 2019 but not in the show is Cat Nap, which has already been presented to a friend.  It is also a design by Kelley Belfast and drawn by me.
OH!!!!!  Don't want to forget Patriotic Pumpkins but that piece is busy gracing my harvest table at the moment.
However,  I'd forgotten to take Horses and Hearts so it stayed home.  Guess I can take it for next year's show at Cape May.
Will do another blog post tomorrow.  I'm BAACK.

Binding Lititz Hens

All hooked and almost completely bound...the front.
And the back.
The binding get finished as I've been listing items on eBay all afternoon.  But needed to do a blog post so here it is.

This is being bound with 3" cotton binding tape.  It is a product I've used before and purchased a whole roll of it some time ago.  The company offers various widths and in cotton or polyester tape.  It seems pricey but if you have a friend or two who would go together the roll could be divided  equally and make it more affordable.

Something else this width is good for is making a durable sleeve at the top for hanging.

In a previous BLOG POST I showed how this same binding tape was used on my antique adaptation of Santa and Deer rug.

Happy Sunday everyone.

Almost but not Quite

Was hoping to show a finished photo of Lititz Hens but it isn't quite finished.  There's only a small section to hook but has been so long since I've seen a view on the computer decided to take a photo anyway.

Remember how red the hen on the right always looked before?  This time the photo was taken with my iPad.  This is more true to the colors I see.
Am loving this Magdalena Briner Eby design.  And in case you're wondering, neither this rug nor the Magdalena Goat rug appear in the book shown below.  Those two were discovered after publication of the book.

However, the booklet is a wealth of knowledge about Magdalena, her life and her rugs.  You can purchase a copy HERE.
My heart goes out to everyone who has suffered loss in the recent devastation of tornadoes and flooding.

Lititz Hens

An update, but wish it was further along.  As usual I did some reverse hooking and in a couple small spots more than once.  Sure can't move forward if I'm always walking backward.
The regular readers know this is an adaptation of a rug originall hooked in the 1800s by Magdalena Briner Eby  so this info is for you newbies just beginning to follow my blog.

Still don't have the geometric fully bound but I'm working on that too....uh, ever so slowly.

Happy Sunday.

Magdalena's Lititz Hens

Am luv'n this rug so far.  Just wish the digital camera could capture the proper colors of the wool.  The right hen is NOT red , it is a warm brown.  With the other setting on the camera the photos appear even brighter.

Initially, when pulling colors for the rug there were two pieces of wool from which to make my selection for the right hen.  The other was too dark brown, almost black.  Perhaps that one would have made a better photo.  But, I will live with this rug and love what I see in person.
Still have Star Geo to bind and several rugs to label before attending the April rug camp in 2 months.  Yeah sounds like so far away (in kid's time) but real time will go in a flash.

Yesterday's weather was great and today was even better.  Tomorrow is going to be disappointing compared to these last two.  But hey, days are getting longer so sun will bring out the temps.

Then there's MARCH WINDS and APRIL SHOWERS.  It was March 2nd last year which brought down two huge live trees in my yard.  So I'm really skeptical about March.

Good evening to all.

Lititz Hens Update

Haven't worked on binding Star Geometric since the previous post.  After realizing it would be better with double strand yarn for better coverage have put it on hold.  Oh well, binding isn't my favorite thing to do anyway 😏.

Again, this is a design by Magdalena Briner Eby which I've named Lititz Hens.  It measures 19 1/2 x 40.
That right hen doesn't look that red in person and makes me second guess my choice of wool colors.  No way I'm pulling out that whole hen tho, so it stays as is.

Binding this one will go much easier since I sewed on a 3" cotton binding tape before hooking.  Knowing there would NOT be any change to the border makes this style of binding really easy.  This one might even get bound before Star.

Luckily this area did not get the snow which was predicted but did get a few rain drops.  However there is another front coming thru and we won't escape the frigid temperatures.  Thank gawd my heater didn't fail during this forecast.

LITITZ HENS

Am calling this design by Magdalena Briner Eby "Lititz Hens".  Sorry more hasn't been accomplished on it since the last posting, but such is life.
In case you are a new visitor, the dimensions of this pattern is 19 1/2 x 40.  Neither this rug nor Magdalena's Goat, previously hooked by me, appear in this book.  But if this isn't on your rug hooking book shelves it should be.  If you wish to order a copy you can contact Kathy Wright HERE.
If you missed Magdalena's Goat I hooked this the original size (29 x 35) which was close to colors Magdalena used to hook hers.
And this smaller size of 22 x 26 was hooked in different colors  just to give prospective hookers color ideas.
Okay, with the 'such is life' comment above, I was without heat for 24 hours.  Being a 'glass half full' type of person, am thankful the temps weren't those of the previous week.  Last week with soaring winds and temperature in the teens it could have been much worse.

Thankfully it is warm now and getting ready to have a bowl of chili to warm my insides as well.  Happy Saturday.
