WINDOW SCAPE

Janice, Prims by the Water, has her cupboard scapes so will show my window scape.  I hook beside a window so at night sitting under an OTT light I'm very noticeable and don't want to be.  Previously I've been hanging a dark cloth to cover the window.  But today I purchased curtain clips and will hang various rugs in that space to hide my visibility and to enjoy another rug when it is changed out.  You can see it is dusk thru the top part of the window.  

I hooked this rug in September 2022 and cannot believe it has been that long ago.  Sure do love a blotchy background.

It's slim pickings finding antique rugs during the Christmas season.  Guess I won't be able to find any until January.  Even then perhaps many would be sold.  So next old rug show will probably be the leftovers which  didn't make the first cut for the team or second pick.  But do have more on my flash drive, just not the A listers.

A LITTLE HELP FROM A FRIEND

This blog post was handed to me by follower/friend Lady Locust who suggested it's been a long time since I hooked a 'structure', house, etc.  I began to wonder myself so looked thru photos of rugs I've hooked and sent her a list.  Then the lightbulb lit up that this should be my next post.

Actually I have had thoughts of hooking a row of log cabins but that never materialized.  Perhaps if I wasn't so lazy I'd draw one up.  Meanwhile, here are some rugs and mats I've hooked with some sort of building on it.

These aren't in any special order but some might spark a memory.  The first photo has two small structures in it and was a pattern swap with Briarwood Folk Art.  She wanted my Frost Sheep and Birds pattern and I chose her Big Dog Hollow pattern.  Nice fair swap and neither of us had to spend money except for postage.

I drew the Deer with Blue House, an antique adaptation.

Another antique adaptation I drew and hooked was Cottage and Apple Tree.

A small mat which was my contribution in a swap on Yahoo Rughookers before Facebook came along.

This next rug inspired me because Evelyn Lawrence mentioned she was to teach at Sauder and her subjects were to be designs by Harriet Powers (quilter) and Granny Donaldson's cow blankets.  So I asked Evelyn if she'd be interested in taking something I hook of Harriet Powers' designs as a sample for her class.  Of course she jumped on the invitation.

It is my interpretation of the 500 Mile Betts block in Powers' Bible Quilt, and I gifted the piece to Evelyn who has it in her personal collection.

A Day in the Country is a design by Tonya Robey.  The colors look washed out, sorry.  Good grief, hard to believe this was hooked in 2015, where has this last 10 years gone??

Below is Long Island Farmhouse which is a Lucille Festa Design.

When hooking a Tonya Robey design to be in one of her "Inspirations" booklets she drew this design and I hooked a dark chicken.  But....

.... it was hard to see so reverse hooked and changed it to a white duck, lol.

There was a row of houses in Lori Brechlin's Nantucket Broom Ride which is sold by Kris Miller.

Below, using various motifs available, I designed the rug which was named Puppy Love.

Rainbow Cabin is a design by Barb Carroll and located in one of her booklets.

A Karen Kahle design has many cute slanted cabins in her Small Flowerbox pattern.

In the distance are two structures.  This was a Spring Challenge organized by Kelley Belfast one year.  My daffodils were proddy and a real bell on the sheep.

Oh what fun this next pattern was to hook.  It's name is Windy Day and Cushing sells the pattern.  I should have had it out a week ago when the wind was horrific but March is just around the corner and will pull it out.

My design named Ox Farm has a house in the background.

And finally, another Lori design named Merrie Oct. 31st.  You can see I opted to not put 31st as I might want to keep it out more than one day.

A LITTLE T & T

T&T translated means "This and That".  

Hard to comprehend it is December already; where did this past year go?  The seasons just sorta flew by but all those seasons are visible in the new lines on my face, lol.

Another Thanksgiving has come and gone, the calendar has been flipped to December so it is time to remove the hooked turkey rug from the harvest table and put something else in its place.  

It's too soon for Santa so will enjoy the Deer and Blue House I hooked plus the inside bird houses purchased at Rugs by the Sea camp.  They are made with discarded parts from the Chalfonte Hotel as repairs were made.   

But soon, too soon, the adaptation of Santa and Deer will appear in that spot.

My Thanksgiving baked chicken dinner was good.  While I wanted to pick up a few things at Walmart the next day decided it was unwise due to it being Black Friday and avoided the whole weekend.  So decided to make a T&T soup from my fridge and freezer.  

Personally I think vegetable soup is made much better with cabbage ~ could be because that's what my mother always said.  I only had a small wedge of cabbage left so chopped that up along with a little left over chicken breast, celery, onion, a couple potatoes, carrots and bits of this and that.  Was good but probably would have been better if I'd had more cabbage.

Back in the day when I vended at the beach area there were so many creative artists and the temptation to buy overwhelming.  This painted rock was just one of the many purchases I made.  But this isn't just any ordinary rock.

This was one of hundreds of rocks used as ballast in a British War Ship which sunk off Lewes, Delaware.  The artist attached this inscription to the bottom of all her work.  If you want to learn more about the HMS DeBraak click HERE.

When You Get a Rug Pattern Order......

...but your drawing/cutting table looks like this.  So decided to clean up the table and if she changed her mind at least the work table would be clean again.  And I found a piece of wool I'd been looking for.

The young woman wanted the pattern Deer and Blue House so thought I'd give you and her an update on my progress.  A question to her was if she wanted me to draw the dots and dashes for the color change in the background or if she planned to hook a solid color background.  The dashes might be intimidating or confusing so thought I'd ask.  She chose the dots and dashes.  You can see those remaining in my rug below.

While I referred to the antique during the hooking process I did make some subtle changes and am totally in love with this antique rug design.  There's still a way to go on hooking this and NO am NOT ready to put Mary on my frame again just yet ~ she and I have certain issues, lol.

UPDATE on DEER and BLUE HOUSE

Am taking another look-see of the rug since pulling out the reddish brown wool at the top and replacing it with the brassy gold I first fell in love with.

As usual I wanted to keep hooking and accomplish more but this morning realized my last post was Sunday so needed to pull it off the frame and take a photo.  It's the same brassy gold which is also in the MIA Comstock rug but think there's enough to share.  Yet I'm not ready to put Comstock back on the frame.

Not sure how many loops will get pulled today as the higher humidity comes back tomorrow and there's work to be done outside.  However it will be  happing hooking when I do get to pull those loops.

TAKING a LOOK SEE

Today I decided to not spend the hour plus whipping the edge of my previously hooked rug.  Instead chose to hook more on my present project to decide color choices for the leaves.  Seems more clear when seeing it on the monitor.  So here goes....

Well hells bells.  Seems it is the background which stood out like a sore thumb to me.  The original antique background I struggled with how to hook it as I loved that blotchy gold part but already did that with Cottage and Apple Tree. Here is the original deer antique below.

I'd decided to not do the gold again but do a different color from the rest of the lower part of the rug.  However I don't like what I've hooked for the top background at all, just too dark too red.  

Don't fret, this is not a 'put it in the bag' moment.  Am still in love with this design and I'll have to choose different colors for that part of the background.  Ya know, this is how those damn wooly worms multiply as I've a lot of that background color already cut.  

So guess that hour plus of whipping the edge of Cottage is about to happen this evening after all.  Who knows what my rug will look like next time you see it.

NAMING and LABELING RUGS

When to use these words:  antique adaptation, inspired by or my design?  I'll give you a few examples.  The first photo of a small mat was inspired by the style of Magdalena Briner Eby and named it Crow Magdalena Style.

The following rug named "Gossip" was designed by Bill Laraway and my friend hooked the feathered friends as Bill designed it.

I wasn't so enthusiastic about hooking the feathered non-bird motifs (turkey, rooster, swan, owl) so I took creative license to draw my own birds.

I cannot claim this to be my design just because I changed and redrew a few things.  This is how my label reads; yeah hard to read but I included a photo of the original design by Bill Laraway.

Another good example is the design by Nola Heidbreder named Golden in the Garden and here is a photo of the original linen.

Again I didn't want to hook the Golden I wanted to hook a Rottweiler to represent my boy Ben.  Tho my drawn perspective and hooking of the head isn't a very good representation of my handsome boy, I know who it is.  

Okay, so you're thinking that because these patterns were drawn by someone else that's why I give credit to them?  So what if I draw a pattern on my own linen?  Dear departed Barb Carroll authored a book with several free to draw patterns.

In that book is a design named July Cabin and here is the original photo from the book.  You can see there are flags on the trees instead of leaves.

I drew my version with leaves, added more stars, lowered the smoke at a different angle to reduce the height of the rug and eliminated the cat on the roof.  Yet I still cannot call this my design ~ it is still Barb Carroll's July Cabin and labeled as such.

Ah, you're thinking because these are modern day designers that's why I can't take credit, right?  So what about antique rugs whether a purchased pattern or you draw it yourself?  When I draw an antique design I usually name it how the auction house described it.  Or if the designer is known, such as a Magdalena design, I give her credit on my label and on my blog.  My last two Magdalena rugs were Magdalena's Rooster, Duck and Horse....

..and Magdalena's Bird Dog.  Both of which I've given Magdalena credit for the design and say it is 'an antique adaptation'.  I'd show you the labels but the rugs are on the wall.

However I do have a photo of other labels I'd made so you can see what they say.  Notice on the Mighty Whale and Posies and Stars I indicate they are antique adaptations but designer unknown.

When I hook antique designs I am not trying to pass them off as antiques but rather an adaptation of an antique and indicate that on the label.  With Deer and Blue House rug if I were to remove the antlers of the buck I still cannot in good conscience say it was my design.  It was a design by someone else even if I don't know that person's name and even tho it was originally hooked 1920.  Therefore a label for this rug will indicate it is an antique adaptation and NOT designed by me.  I may have drawn it and offer as a pattern, but is not my design.

See how I snuck in an updated photo of my present project?  I almost changed the color of the antlers but decided to keep how it started.  Before moving to another motif I'd like to get one row of dark around the buck and the thin light outline completed.  Am going to change the blades of grass colors below him too.

Happily hooking inside today as it is another hot as hades day outside.

TIME TO SHOW WHAT'S ON MY FRAME

It's really anti-climatic at this point because not much has been hooked.  Yet isn't that always the complaint from me and Lauren (Rugs and Pugs)?  Seems we never accomplish as much as we'd hoped.  And sadly that is even more true for Lauren now because I don't think she has pulled a loop in weeks/month since she is preparing for vending at Sauder.

On my frame is Deer and Blue House, an antique adaptation which I drew measuring 21 x 30.  I'm hooking with mostly #9 with some #8.5 and a few #8.

The overdyed wool being used for the buck was an older natural wool purchase from Dorr and it is rough to pull thru the linen, even the #8 cut.  It must have been a coat weight wool, but have my Hartman hooks with the big shank to forge thru the linen to make it work.

In case you're wondering, I do the dashes and dots on the pattern where there's a change in value in the background.  I do it for me as well as customers in case they want to show the gradation in background color.  I usually ask the customer and sometimes the person wants to hook an all solid background and 'do their own thing' which is absolutely understandable.  Just want to give the option.

Horribly hot and humid here so time outside is limited.  My local wonderful weatherman said we will lose one hour this month as now we lose 2 minutes per day in daylight.  And it isn't even 'fall back' time change yet.
