ON MY FRAME

Was sure each of you would know what my next rug would be, and Robin nailed it in her comment at the end of that post.  So here it is at this moment.  As you can see from the  beak and head of the Eagle I'm redesigning as I go.  I might want the fluff of hackles on the head...maybe.  Still need to decide if I should  outline around the base of  the Shield with a thin blue row or if using a tad darker value of background color would do the job.  There's plenty of hooking to do while I ponder that situation.
Looking at the rug now am wishing I'd drawn more of the Eagle's tarsometatarsi, which is the part of the leg before the talons and covered with feathers.  Not enough room me thinks; besides people will get the idea what those claws are attached to.

On Facebook I noticed a couple people have started or completed their America's Birthday rugs.  Previously I posted patriotic antique rugs to provide inspiration and wonder if anyone has decided to join me in this milestone celebration of America.  If you would like to see that post again, you can see it HERE.

The stars are being hooked with an #8.5 cut since I had those strips handy.  Wondered if that would work as well as the #9 cut and it does for this rug.  This technique was taught in a class by Kris Miller and you can see the tutorial blog post HERE.

Hope everyone has a terrific weekend, and wishing you joy in every loop you pull.  Happy hooking.

A LITTLE HELP FROM A FRIEND

This blog post was handed to me by follower/friend Lady Locust who suggested it's been a long time since I hooked a 'structure', house, etc.  I began to wonder myself so looked thru photos of rugs I've hooked and sent her a list.  Then the lightbulb lit up that this should be my next post.

Actually I have had thoughts of hooking a row of log cabins but that never materialized.  Perhaps if I wasn't so lazy I'd draw one up.  Meanwhile, here are some rugs and mats I've hooked with some sort of building on it.

These aren't in any special order but some might spark a memory.  The first photo has two small structures in it and was a pattern swap with Briarwood Folk Art.  She wanted my Frost Sheep and Birds pattern and I chose her Big Dog Hollow pattern.  Nice fair swap and neither of us had to spend money except for postage.
I drew the Deer with Blue House, an antique adaptation.
Another antique adaptation I drew and hooked was Cottage and Apple Tree.
A small mat which was my contribution in a swap on Yahoo Rughookers before Facebook came along.

This next rug inspired me because Evelyn Lawrence mentioned she was to teach at Sauder and her subjects were to be designs by Harriet Powers (quilter) and Granny Donaldson's cow blankets.  So I asked Evelyn if she'd be interested in taking something I hook of Harriet Powers' designs as a sample for her class.  Of course she jumped on the invitation.

It is my interpretation of the 500 Mile Betts block in Powers' Bible Quilt, and I gifted the piece to Evelyn who has it in her personal collection.
A Day in the Country is a design by Tonya Robey.  The colors look washed out, sorry.  Good grief, hard to believe this was hooked in 2015, where has this last 10 years gone??
Early Farm Scene which is in private collection, sold 2024.
Below is Long Island Farmhouse which is a Lucille Festa Design.
When hooking a Tonya Robey design to be in one of her "Inspirations" booklets she drew this design and I hooked a dark chicken.  But....
.... it was hard to see so reverse hooked and changed it to a white duck, lol.
There was a row of houses in Lori Brechlin's Nantucket Broom Ride which is sold by Kris Miller.
Below, using various motifs available, I designed the rug which was named Puppy Love.
Rainbow Cabin is a design by Barb Carroll and located in one of her booklets.
A Karen Kahle design has many cute slanted cabins in her Small Flowerbox pattern.
In the distance are two structures.  This was a Spring Challenge organized by Kelley Belfast one year.  My daffodils were proddy and a real bell on the sheep.
Oh what fun this next pattern was to hook.  It's name is Windy Day and Cushing sells the pattern.  I should have had it out a week ago when the wind was horrific but March is just around the corner and will pull it out.
My design named Ox Farm has a house in the background.
And finally, another Lori design named Merrie Oct. 31st.  You can see I opted to not put 31st as I might want to keep it out more than one day.
Well kids, that's it for today's trunk show.  Anytime you get a hanker'n to pull my chain and give me an idea, please feel free to do so.  Thanks Lady Locust.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Today has been cloudy and rainy.  It is to rain all thru the night and prediction for this eastern shore area is between 1"-3" of rain.  At least it isn't snow, yet.

Wishing all of you a happy Thanksgiving.  Here are a few turkey rugs I've hooked.  The 1847 turkey was from a Need'l Love booklet and color planned in my first Lucille Festa class.  There is no last initial hooked in the rug as I was being divorced from and planning to take the last name Porter back and relinquishing the name Slagle.  He didn't want me so I didn't want his last name.  Yeah, I know, more information than you needed, lol.
Turkey and Tallowberries designed by Lori Brechlin and sold by Spruce Ridge Studios.  This one I hooked at home around 2016.
Old Tom is another pattern with the Lori and Kris collaboration.  I hooked this one at home too but not as happy with my color selection even the second time around.  If you want to look at poor Old Tom's before life you can see it HERE.
Again, Happy Thanksgiving.

MY PAST CAPE MAY RUGS

This is the second week of classes for Rugs By The Sea rug camp which I'm not attending this year.  In a previous post I showed rugs hooked with various teachers ending with the year 2011.  If you missed the post or want to revisit, you can see those rugs HERE.

Now will continue with the rug hooked in 2012 with Bev Conway.  I'd wanted to hook this pattern for a while and was happy to finally have it on a frame with wonderful Bev Conway as the teacher.  The pattern name is Wee Folk, a design by Vermont Folk Art Rugs.
In 2013 I took a class with Diane Stoffel and hooked my departed girl Shadow.  That was a stressful 5 days because I'd dyed enough wool for my girl but her head was drawn larger than real life and ran out of wool.  So we went looking thru other teacher's wool to find something suitable.  Diane is a wonderful teacher and artist for sure.  But was a lesson to me to take fun things to class as rug camps are supposed to be fun.  I love my girl Shadow and see her every day to remind me of her wonderful spirit.  She was hooked in #8.
My rug design named Ali Katz was hooked in 2014.  Since Ali Strebel was my teacher that seemed like a perfect name for my rug.
The following year (2015) was fun hooking a design named Nantucket Broom Ride in a class with Kris Miller.  Every time I look at this rug I'm reminded of the wonderful class with Kris and following communications with departed friend Barb Carroll.
Guess you could call me a 'groupie' because the next year 2016 I was in a class with...uh, you guessed, it Kris Miller!  I hooked another Lori Brechlin design called Do Goode, Be Nice.  And used a skeleton key instead of hooking it.
In 2017 I had my first class with Cammie Bruce.  She had a short class on 'primitive' rugs which blew my mind.  Was so glad she had that class as it changed my attitude since there are so many variables which decide primitive. Anyway, I'm getting away from the subject of rugs hooked at Cape May..... M
y pattern was a design by Bev Conway called On the Loose.
I feel the need to explain the next rug hooked 2018.  I'd been given a design by a friend designed by Nola Heidbreder called Golden in the Garden.  I wanted to change the dog to my Rottweiler Ben and didn't have an idea on color planning other th
an the dog.  Before camp  I hooked Ben to have that part out of the way.  It was unfair to Lucille but I knew what colors Ben was and needed help with color planning the rest of the rug.

BTW my drawing of him was way out of proportion and look forward to having another class with Lucille in the future with a proper primitive rug.
To put my beautiful boy in better perspective here is a profile I drew and hooked him from a photo in #8 and #8.5 later at home.
OMG, 2019 class with Kris Miller was a hoot.  Even more fun and fond memories than years before.  In that class I hooked Oh Glorious Day.  If you'd like to get all the behind the scenes about that class you can find it HERE.
Rug Camp was cancelled 2020 due to Covid but I hooked 17 rugs and mats that year.  Won't bore you with those photos here but if you followed me you would have seen them.

Last year, 2021, I was in Bev Conway's class where I hooked Stacked Birds, a Margaret Shaw design.
Wherever you are hope all your loops are perfect.  Happy Hooking.

My CAPE MAY HOOKED RUGS

Since I'm not attending Cape May this week or next week thought I'd show you rugs hooked in classes with various teachers at that venue.  Actually my very first rug camp was April 2003 in Ocean City, MD but this blog post is about rugs hooked at Rugs By The Sea.

In 2003 and my first year at Cape May was with teacher Patsy Becker when I hooked Eat Crow, a design by Anne Hallett.  My last name was different then thus the SS initials.
While at that camp and soaking up anything rug related noticed the class being taught by Bev Conway beside me.  In 2004 she was my teacher and hooked her design Pineapples and Flowers.
I'm drawing a blank on what rug was hooked 2005 at Cape May or which teacher I had.   So will show you rugs which bring no memory of teacher, only hooking at home.  Yet I know for a fact I was there.   Fluted Basket is a design by Karen Kahle and was a free pattern insert in a RHM.
Another Karen Kahle pattern hooked that year was Stop and Smell the Roses.
Tonya Robey was the designer of this whimsical lion hooked that year also.  It was a kit and came with Tonya's overdyed wool.
Anyway..... 2006 in a class with Bev Conway I hooked her Rufus the Lion.
In a Lucille Festa class 2007 my project was 1847 Turkey from the Needl'love booklet.  Notice just the initial "S" appears as the signage.  That is because I was in limbo, going thru a divorce and hadn't received court documents to take back the last name of my deceased husband.  OH, perhaps that is why I don't recall which rug or which teacher I had in 2005 ~ that was the year with lots of turmoil, health scare due to stress and life decisions to make.  So there was no room in my brain to store happy memories.
Cape May 2008  I asked permission from Brenda Gervais to hook her Herb Angel needle punch design.  She granted it so printed her email permission and took it with me to camp.
The following year (2009) it was yet another class with Bev Conway and  hooked her pattern Speckled Hens.  The original design had the chickens sitting on one huge egg but I wanted them sitting on straw.
Although a poor copy, below is what the original design was supposed to look like.  Naturally I had to change it.
2010 was my first class with Kris Miller and I drew this antique adaptation of a Stag.  If I were to do it over again (which I won't)  there would be less background and would draw the motifs a little closer together.
The following year in another class with Kris at Cape May I hooked Barb Carroll's July Cabin.  The pattern is in one of Barb's books and I drew leaves where the original design had small flags.  Also changed the direction of the smoke so the design wouldn't be as tall.
There are still a few years' rugs from Cape May to show but will save them for next time when there is the second week of classes at Rugs By the Sea camp.

In other news......see that black slithery thing on my front porch?  It was time to ride the bike and get the mail but I wanted to watch the black snake.   Sadly the camera was on the wrong setting and didn't realize it until just now so it doesn't show up well.

Anyway it slithered down to the ground at that point then went to the garage to get the bike.  The garage door went up so far and stopped so figured a leaf had blown in from outside.  Nope, it was the snake who was slithering in.  It saw me and quickly hid under the shelving.  When I returned with mail it wasn't where I'd seen it last and who knows where it is now.
Thunderstorms came thru last night but is nice and sunny today.  Hot but not as humid.
And it's mail time again.  Happy hooking.

Just the Beginning

Can't say I've accomplished much since starting this 5 days ago and already thinking of removing that blue wool and go for something more teal.  It depends on which Mary Comstock photo I look at, and will show you what I mean further down.  The lettering had to be re-worked and will get into that in yet another blog post one of these days.
You've probably seen the antique Mary Comstock rug in the Kopp book and for convenience here it is again.  I used the Kopp book to pull my blue wool from the worm bag but second guessing those colors now.  Won't worry about the blue issue yet as there's more script to hook at the top first.
Then there are photos of the original Comstock Bed Rug and colors which appear more teal.  We all know cameras, printers and computer monitors alter what we each see in person.
For the life of me cannot recall where I acquired these wonderful photos below of the original antique but have savored each one.

So now I've changed the text color to more teal which I find more pleasing to my eye...me thinks ðŸ˜•
The brown shows up more warm and rich than the photo in the Kopp book.
And here is a shot of the entire gorgeous Mary Comstock rug and I guess the ladies who made this photo shot happen.  Thanks gals!
Who the heck knows what color I'll finally choose.  But I'd be  interested in your opinion.  If Kris Miller still reads my blog I think her vote would be for teal.

Enjoy your evening; it is a chilly once again today and seems mother nature can't make up her mind if it is winter, spring, summer or fall.  So will just wear long sleeves and change mid-day, cover at night with a quilt or not ~ crazy weather and it is almost June.  No matter the weather happy hooking (stitching, quilting, knitting).
