A LITTLE HELP FROM A FRIEND

This blog post was handed to me by follower/friend Lady Locust who suggested it's been a long time since I hooked a 'structure', house, etc.  I began to wonder myself so looked thru photos of rugs I've hooked and sent her a list.  Then the lightbulb lit up that this should be my next post.

Actually I have had thoughts of hooking a row of log cabins but that never materialized.  Perhaps if I wasn't so lazy I'd draw one up.  Meanwhile, here are some rugs and mats I've hooked with some sort of building on it.

These aren't in any special order but some might spark a memory.  The first photo has two small structures in it and was a pattern swap with Briarwood Folk Art.  She wanted my Frost Sheep and Birds pattern and I chose her Big Dog Hollow pattern.  Nice fair swap and neither of us had to spend money except for postage.
I drew the Deer with Blue House, an antique adaptation.
Another antique adaptation I drew and hooked was Cottage and Apple Tree.
A small mat which was my contribution in a swap on Yahoo Rughookers before Facebook came along.

This next rug inspired me because Evelyn Lawrence mentioned she was to teach at Sauder and her subjects were to be designs by Harriet Powers (quilter) and Granny Donaldson's cow blankets.  So I asked Evelyn if she'd be interested in taking something I hook of Harriet Powers' designs as a sample for her class.  Of course she jumped on the invitation.

It is my interpretation of the 500 Mile Betts block in Powers' Bible Quilt, and I gifted the piece to Evelyn who has it in her personal collection.
A Day in the Country is a design by Tonya Robey.  The colors look washed out, sorry.  Good grief, hard to believe this was hooked in 2015, where has this last 10 years gone??
Early Farm Scene which is in private collection, sold 2024.
Below is Long Island Farmhouse which is a Lucille Festa Design.
When hooking a Tonya Robey design to be in one of her "Inspirations" booklets she drew this design and I hooked a dark chicken.  But....
.... it was hard to see so reverse hooked and changed it to a white duck, lol.
There was a row of houses in Lori Brechlin's Nantucket Broom Ride which is sold by Kris Miller.
Below, using various motifs available, I designed the rug which was named Puppy Love.
Rainbow Cabin is a design by Barb Carroll and located in one of her booklets.
A Karen Kahle design has many cute slanted cabins in her Small Flowerbox pattern.
In the distance are two structures.  This was a Spring Challenge organized by Kelley Belfast one year.  My daffodils were proddy and a real bell on the sheep.
Oh what fun this next pattern was to hook.  It's name is Windy Day and Cushing sells the pattern.  I should have had it out a week ago when the wind was horrific but March is just around the corner and will pull it out.
My design named Ox Farm has a house in the background.
And finally, another Lori design named Merrie Oct. 31st.  You can see I opted to not put 31st as I might want to keep it out more than one day.
Well kids, that's it for today's trunk show.  Anytime you get a hanker'n to pull my chain and give me an idea, please feel free to do so.  Thanks Lady Locust.

Cottage and Apple Tree

It's finished all but the whipped edge and I'm working on that task a little at a time.  There are only few things I have a two-step process on; one is doing that pre-binding stitching all the way around the design even before pulling the first loop.  And the other is rolling the foundation forward and running a basting stitch all the way around before whipping.  Oh, and I love those little clips;  they're very handy and they come in different sizes.   Purchased mine from Minnesota Fabrics but am pretty sure you could order them from Amazon.

Yeah, Robin I can hear you mumbling something like....'no wonder you hate binding you're doing it twice'.  But I find it easier to control the edge.
Although this design and the colors were out of my box it was a most enjoyable piece to hook.  The dimensions are 22 x30 and hooked mostly with #8.5 with a few #8 and the thin outlines were inherited narrow cut strips which I'm glad I saved.  Amazing how many times I've gone to that bag in search of certain colors.  However last year at Cape May I gave a bunch of strips to a friend in colors I do not like and she used them in a purse she was hooking.

Lovely day here today with less humidity, thank goodness.  Think I'll even walk to the mailbox instead of riding my bike.  Happy Saturday.

Update on Cottage and Apple Tree

Really wanted to hook more on it but last blog post was Wednesday so thought you deserved another since it's Friday 🍷.
In addition to horses I love rabbits.  There is an adult rabbit or have been adult rabbits who find the space under my back deck their birthing place.  I've even encountered a mother rabbit beating the hell out of a snake who came too close to entering the side of the deck as she wrestled it in the vinca minor (periwinkle).

Didn't get a video of that because I wanted to stand watch and run to her rescue if she needed it.  But the scene is imbedded in my brain.  I never thought a rabbit would tangle with a snake but guess a mama rabbit is like a mother bear and will defend her young at all costs.

Now there are a couple baby bunnies who I've tried to capture a picture of and was unsuccessful until just a few minutes ago.  And of course the wee ones which would fit comfortably in the palm of one hand have grown in the last couple weeks.
This is the same bunny and for some reason the color of the grass looks different but same day same camera, just a little closer.
Interesting thing is when putting up the bird feeders in the morning or taking them down in the evening I see the rabbit.   And I will whisper "it's okay, it's okay baby bunny" and it stays right there; as if it knows I won't harm it.  But I'm afraid the hawks will learn of it's habits and won't have a bunny any longer.    Yesterday I did see a baby in the front yard not sure if it was the sibling or this one so hopefully the bunny is getting wiser and moving location more.
So maybe, just maybe this is a female she will have her babies under my deck too.
Happy Hooking and happy Friday.  And now for the forecast...

Holiday Weekend at the Cottage, etc.

That would be this cottage.  Pulled a few more loops on Cottage and Apple Tree and had high hopes with low results.  But isn't that what Lauren and I always complain about?  At least the cottage is fully hooked.
The front door was drawn and hooked straight.  The tilt is an optical illusion with the downward slant with the apple at the base of the tree and edge of house.  That is how the original antique was, I thought it a hoot that an apple would roll downhill past the house and so it was drawn in my pattern.

Worked on the thorny vines near that tree stump again this morning until the project had to come to a stop.  This is what was achieved.  Yeah doesn't look like much but it took some time digging, pulling and time to yank those bloody roots out.
All was going great until I went for the last clump which had grown into the side of the tree and this happened.  See that bent prong?  I tried to hammer it down in place.  Even put the wayward prong in a vice and tried bending it.  But will need to rely on my favorite neighbor to get it back in shape for me so I can finish off the bleeding thorny vine.
This is what is left and once that SOB is pulled out I'll spray the hell of the area around the stump!!!!!!
Plans for tomorrow will be to play with wool again and not sure what else.  Weather permitting may cut grass.  But since life and time seems to be fast-forwarding for all of us I suggest we enjoy every day like it's our last.

Happy Hooking.

Back To The Cottage (edited)

Just like leaving for a vacation to get away from everything, that is how it feels to work on Cottage and Apple Tree.  The previous rug projects are behind me and hysterical news media off the TV.

I'd hoped to have the cottage its self hooked before showing it, but you know how that goes...best laid plans and all that.  Also think the original antique had a darker gold color just under the bird.  And I happen to have some but will compare and decide later.

EDIT:  Dear Robin asked me what cut I'm using so perhaps others are wondering.  I’m using mostly #8.5 with some #8 but the narrow white lines are thin strips I inherited so using those up.  At first I considered not outlining but think by doing so it dates it.
Hmmm, just looked and not only that gold but the colors in the bird are darker.  Oh well, oh hell, I just have to 'make do' as my previous designed and hooked rug suggests.....
I'm anxiously awaiting friend Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) returning from a rug camp with Sally Kallin.  It does take time to get back to normal after a rug camp but looking forward to 'reading all about it'.

RAISE THE CURTAIN PLEASE......

...for the reveal of the new rug on my frame.
Let me tell you it was a difficult decision because my love of all those  vintage rugs remained constant throughout the days since first posting.  Normally my passion wanes and I lose interest on one or two.  Not this time.   But this is the one I chose.... Cottage with Apple Tree.
Getting antsy working on the house since it is so big and want to move on to the trees or something else.  Question to self....do I finish the house first and as dessert move on or have fun on another motif and go back to the house?   Hmmmm, guess I've another decision to make.  Oh if all of life decisions were that easy.

Mother and Fishbowl has been steamed and in the process of being slowly bound.  But not before doing one more tweak.  Will explain and show it in a future post.

Happy hooking.
