Motivated To Finish

I've become very motivated to hurry and finish binding Bird Dog and complete hooking Winter Buddies as there's a new rug in my horizon.  Only the short side remains to be whipped and another steaming to complete Bird Dog.
Am close to pulling the last loops on Winter Buddies then will be just this one to bind when starting the next project.
The timing is working well with just 8 days away before the next project to begin on the 15th (you ready Lauren? 😁)  You all know the project is a Granny Donaldson cow blanket design I've chosen for myself.  So you've got time to decide if you'd like to join us.  In case there are new visitors or if you've forgotten you can read about it HERE and choose a design to replicate.

As always......happy hooking.

Honey, I'm HOME

There is so much to tell you about rug camp but I've been busy doing laundry, putting things away and still resizing photos.  So thought I'd at least show a finish to the small piece started before camp.

This is the Sunflower Duo on my front door and ready to welcome fall.
It isn't a very good photo but at least it is a little something after so many days away from home and blog posting.

Get'n Ready

That's right, I'm getting ready because I don't want to cut it too close, after all there's only 21 days and a wake up before Cape May.  I'm sure my friend Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) is laughing her butt off and will hear from her as soon as she reads this.

So I've pulled some wool for the Cape May project with Bev Conway but am sure I don't have the right values or color for the many circles and values in the rug.
This is the rug pattern I fell in love with while perusing my old Cape May photos.  This beauty was hooked by Polly Reinhart and think it was more her color selection than the design which I loved.  So will need to buy more subdued colors for sure.
And.... since I don't want to go thru withdrawal again have drawn a pattern and some wool 'ready to go' when a new pattern is needed on my frame.
Later today I just might draw a small something else  too, just to have a back-up. 😁

Happy hooking.

I've Pulled Some Loops!!!!!!

Some of what is hooked was done before my hand injury, so it might look like I've accomplished a lot.  Truth is only a little has been done since late this week when I could pull loops.
As you can see I'm still designing by the seat of my pants because where there was a wagon and a goose there is now a BOVINE.  Frankly I'm not sure where this rug will lead me next.

This week has been a crappy week since last Friday when I injured my left hand.  Since it is a Friday again trouble still follows with internet and phone issues.  Thankfully all has been resolved now and am hoping this is the end of the shit week.

Wish I had more to show and was more entertaining but I'm exhausted dealing with Comcast and want to pull a few loops before going to bed.  Hopefully will have a more upbeat post next time.

Close But Not Exact

I've loved this antique rug for a few years and fell in love even more when watching a friend hook her version in a class with Kris Miller.  The original rug measures 23 x 41.
This morning while perusing various sites for old rugs stumbled upon this Sheep said to be hooked 19th century and from the estate of Penny Marshall ~ yes, THAT Penny Marshall.
The rug measures 23.5 x 36.
So I'm wondering if one is a derivative or adaptation of the other.  If you are wondering who that friend was, it was Tanya Wishard and what a beauty she created.
The antique rug is back on my 'to do' list but am still working on New Years Eve, Over the Moon is on the side lines awaiting the last loops and Woolly Santa still needs to have the binding completed.  So by the time I'm ready to put a newer rug on my frame my interest might be elsewhere.

Happy hooking and stay well.

Antique Rug show

Center flowering tree with deer in center, horses at corner and puzzle piece background.
Faded hooked family and pets from 1860.
The auction site said this was a dog and puppy from the 19th century but I cannot see the puppy very well.  The pup appears to be behind the dog.  Perhaps the underside of the rug shows the dog more prominently.  Dimensions are 25 x 37.
Home, bees and bee hive measuring 19 x 37.
It isn't considered an antique since it was hooked in 1950 but the design is an old Frost Sheep with scrolls design on burlap.  It is considered vintage and it IS lovely with that blotchy background I like.
I hooked the Frost Sheep with Scrolls in a class with delightful and talented lady Barb Carroll.
Landscape with Hen and Chicks with little use of color but does the job.  No date or dimensions were given.
Home with 4 hearts in corners; hooked between 1880 and 1890.
Don't know the actual hooked date but this commemorates The Last Dog Train to leave Lower Fort Garry 1909.
Kittens in a Basket located at the Bloomsburg Antique Show (thanks Kathleen).
And here is a close up of the back with more true colors.
Seaside Cottages at the Beach was the description on the auction site.  It measures 18 x 35 and was hooked mid 20th century.
Happy Hooking.

Rug Show Time

It has been a while since having a rug show on my blog and figure it is about time for my readers to see something a little different than the same ol' same ol'.
Above is landscape with black folk and their critters, rug was hooked mid 20th century.
Above are two bunnies, butterfly and flora from Manchester, NH. No date given.
Love the blue cat above and that blotchy background makes my heart skip a beat.  No provenance at all was provided for this beauty.
I have always wanted to hook an antique rug with neutral colors and this just might be my target.  I love doves and am not longer afraid of scrolls.  Heck, those scrolls are easy peasy tho.

As previously mentioned on my blog, Barb Carroll took the fear of hooking scrolls from me when she mentored me with this rug.  Yeah, you regular readers have seen this one before but it is my love and hangs over the mantle of my fireplace.  (p.s. I offer this pattern for sale).
Speaking of scrolls, below is an antique rug which was recorded as "American School of of Folk Art Floral" and from an estate of Woodbury, CT.
Below is a close up.
Enjoy your evening everyone.  I know Jo Wick and her group are enjoying themselves their second day of camp with the magnificent Barb Carroll.  If you would like to take a class with her you can reach here HERE.

Happy Place Starting Something New

Well new for me that is.  It is an oldie design by Magdalena Briner which has been named Harvey's Magdalena because it was Harvey's Art and Antiques who owned it in 1980.  Someone else owns it now I guess but it was Harvey who is the namesake.

See the bag of ugly dirty wool?  That is wool overdyed when getting ready to hook The Cat's Meow.  This will be a great bunch of worms to use here since they look so old and worn.
And, there is a glass of Pinot Noir to my right side, and just to the left of that is an oil painted Columbian Doll I made which used to have an antique dress.  You can see that same doll in the antique dress and bonnet on my home page of the web site.  But, after adopting Ben he thought she was a play toy.  NOT!!!!!!

Thankfully the doll survived but the antique bonnet and dress did not. So since that time my Columbian doll has been in her knickers and a sweater that is a family heirloom gifted me by my friend Char.  I'm keeping it safe until her daughter or son would like to have it in their family.   Actually, I think it is time for my Columbian doll to be fully covered beyond her knickers so will give her a change of clothes sooner or later.

Have a GOOD FRIDAY tomorrow.

Oh My What a Mess

This is a recurring event with me in my wool room.  A MESS!!!!!!!!!!  No room on the shelves so there is wool on the floor.....
...wool and hooking related things on every flat surface other than the floor and even draped across a chair back.
And there really must be some intrinsic emotional problem with me because I just ordered two yards of Cranky Lizard from Betsy.  Figured I'd better order it now because it is one of my favorites to add to my primitive black background and had used it all up.  Well that is except for the half yard I purchased in November at camp with her.   Since it is a favorite to many am sure it will be gone in a flash.

Now, you see that one clean spot where my cutter sits?  All the wool you see piled up on 2 flat surfaces below the table was where the empty space is.
However, I had an order for two patterns, one I had on hand (Domestic Zoo) but Auntie Peanut had to be drawn.  Domestic Zoo is so large and most hookers what their patterns NOW, so always keep one of those drawn and ready to ship.  Since there was no open drawing space on my drawing/cutter table had to clean if off to draw Auntie.  So the patterns are in the mail now and it won't take me long to make a mess of that table again.

I'm getting close to being finished with my adaptation Cherries and Candy Stripe and will need to clean up the room before I switch to the new rug on my frame.  My plans are still to hook a pattern I'd gotten  from Barb a few years ago.  Actually I've a few patterns purchased while at a WF camp so should start hooking those instead of drawing my own adaptations since they are instant gratification.

Tomorrow I'll show you an update to Cherries and Candy Stripe and hope all that would require is doing the binding.  Then it is clean room time and start pulling wool for Hannah's Hen.

Have a great weekend and hope you are staying warm.

Ali Katz Patterns

As my loyal readers know, I recently hooked a rug aptly named "Ali Katz".  I gave it that name since it was the rug to be hooked at Cape May with Ali Strebel.  A few people have inquired as to the availability of the pattern.
So I have decided to offer it in two sizes.  The one you see here measures 24 x 34.  But for those of you who want a square rug I will offer one measuring 24 x 24 which would NOT include the zig zag  on the two ends.

If interested check out my web site HERE and click on the Patterns link to the left.  You will need to scroll down a little to find the pattern and prices.

Presently I'm hooking a cute snowman and hope to give results tomorrow.  Doctor appointments and other errands has demanded much of my time lately so plan to sit down now and hook a little with a small bowl of yogurt and fruit.

The Cat's Meow is Bound

With the time I was held captive at the Chrysler dealership and the over 2 hours spent at the ophthalmologists office was able to get a large portion of yarn whipped bottom edge done.  Since it was so close to being finished continued when I got home.

Here is The Cat's Meow on my harvest table along with a Raggedy Ann I made.  Ann's face is hooked and the rest of the body is cloth or warm and natural.
Here is the back and you can see the variegated yarn used to bind the underside of the rug as well as the label I made for it.  Even tho I pin the dang label on it never ends up being straight.

Funny thing happened while waiting for the eye doctor.  The guy who fills the glasses prescriptions saw me whipping the edge of the rug and wanted to see what I was working on.  Always happy to share my projects I held it up for him to view.

He asked if I sold them, to which I commented that I do sell some of my rugs.  He asked how much this one would be but mentioned I hadn't done the math on it yet based on the dimensions.  So he said, 'well about how much... $50 - $60?  I smiled and told him there was more than that in the cost of backing and wool used to hook it.

First, I'll excuse his lack of knowledge because he's a man who probably thinks it is just 'women's busy work' and doesn't put any value in it.  But it still amazes me how clueless some people are when it comes to paying for a hand hooked rug.  Perhaps because they can go to Walmart and pick up a throw rug for a few bucks or see hooked rugs made in China so cheap they don't place much value on hand-hooked American made.

The last loop has been pulled on the Magdalena Farm so now that one needs to be bound, as well as the small Duluth Pumpkin.  And I want to tell you that I was going stir crazy last night because there was nothing on a frame to be hooked.  This has only happened a couple times where I wasn't completely ready to start another rug.  Well That will change as of this afternoon once the grass is cut.  This mama is ready to go with a new one.

Have a great Sunday everyone.

A Magdalena's Farm Update

Yeah, I'm sure you are all wanting to see my progress (or lack of) on Magdalena's Farm rug which was started at Woolley Fox camp a couple weeks ago.  In my defense, upon coming home from camp felt it necessary to finish The Cat's Meow rug first since it was so close to being done and was started before attending camp.  That is why there's not more accomplished on this fun rug.
Well, as usual my inclinations were to continue having fun and hooking without posting an update.  But since it was time to move the rug on the frame decided to take a picture.  It appears to be ALMOST half hooked.  Geez, this may be a record since this wasn't started until May 19th.

Have a great evening everyone, we in the east will soon experience the storms the center of the U.S. will experience tonight.  May we all be safe and ... GOD  BLESS  AMERICA.   GOD knows we need his help.

Back to The Cat's Meow

You have no idea how much I wanted to continue hooking on Magdalena's Farm rug which is what I was working on at Woolley Fox.  But there really is so little left on the Cat's Meow, and as it was started first, makes sense that I should finish it first.  Besides, it will just make the reward of working on Magdalena's Farm even sweeter with having to wait.

So what I have left should be quick and easy, I hope.  Here's what's left to hook... just a wee bit more on the top left corner and then it will be the binding to do.  Once finished I'll post a picture of my finished piece on my web site for pattern orders.  But if you are interested in purchasing the pattern before it is posted on my web site you can write me HERE.  The dimensions of this rug are 30 x 30
Enjoy your Memorial Day with family and friends as we thank those service men and women who made the ultimate/life sacrifice to keep us free.  They all put themselves in harms way doing what they felt was their duty to protect our Nation and our people.

My heart goes out to all those families who lost a son, brother, husband, father or friend.  God Bless our Military and God Bless America.

The Cat's Meow

Ooh, think I like that name for this rug instead of what I've been using.  I've dubbed it 'Cat, Birds and Blooms' but that is quite a mouthful.  Besides I'm really enjoying hooking the design so think it IS "The Cat's Meow".
Things are working out well as I get to the count down to Woolley Fox camp.  This rug is the only one on the frame and all but one has been bound.  The Granny Geometric is left and will be bound on the 4 hour road trip to Woolley Fox as my pal Deb drives.  That way it will keep my mind busy as we climb the elevation in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

Hope everyone had a great weekend and for you moms out there, hope it was extra special.  Hugs to all and please be kind to one another.

This one isn't on my web site yet but I did post a picture of my Santa and Deer rug there today.  As soon as this one is done I'll post it on my web site too.

Speaking of web sites... mine really needs a day shifting things around.  Oh well, one day I'll get around to it.  So all I can recommend is you just scroll thru all the old stuff and maybe you'll find a block which has something new in it.  Yup, sounds like a rainy day activity for sure.  But not this week as I'm leaving for Woolley Fox at the end of the week and lots to do before I leave.

OH!!!!!  The rug name......I'd love to hear some suggestions for the name of this rug.  So far I've called it these:  Cat, Birds and Blooms  ~  The Cat's Meow.    But I am open for suggestions and would love to hear them.  Normally I don't sell patterns of a design until after I've hooked it to have a picture for people to see of what I did.   But this time 4 were sold immediately.

If at First You Don't Succeed......

......Try, Try Again.  That was just one of my Parent-isms so wisely told to me in my youth which we all tend to pass on from generation to generation.  And try again I did and will have to try once again.

Even tho I made what I thought was the appropriate adjustment to Shadow's jaw line can see (now that it is hooked in, that it still isn't right.  Not only that but can see darker wool is needed near the eye below and to the right of the very dark that is hooked in.  OMG, perhaps my downfall is placing the photo right beside the rug to make the comparison.  I mean, if I didn't have that photo butted up against the rug I'd think it was Shadow.  But the truth is the jaw is still too large.

So this picture doesn't have the photo next to it, but you can scroll down for the comparison yourself.  Guess it's time for my Long Island Farm to go back on the frame for comfort hooking.
And I've put a picture of a Santa below which Kara inquired about.  She saw it on a previous blog post and inquired if it was still for sale.
Kara, I was unable to respond to your blog inquiry since you have a "NO REPLY" Blogger.  That happens when you sign up for blogger but you don't put any identity as to e-mail address.  If you are reading this and still interested, it is for sale and can read about it on my web site HERE.  So you can write me personally at saundra125@comcast.net if interested.  But just know that unless you go to Blogger and provide an e-mail address no one can reply to any request or comment you make.  I believe that is a little known fact that numerous people aren't aware of.

So, guess what I'm going to place back on my Snapdragon?  You got it!  A comforting wide cut primitive.

Have a great evening folks and stay warm.  Well at least it isn't raining or snowing.

Back to the Cape May Rug Show

Yeah, told you there were more rugs to present to you from Cape May; that was only a brief intermission where I showed you my Shadow Portrait in progress.

Here is a designed and hooked by Norma Batastini called Circus Train ~ The Birds.  And again, nice rounded corners.
To the left is a Sampler pillow hooked by  Jane Bescherer and designed by Merry Hooker Woollens.  On the right is a rug designed and hooked by Nancy Weaver.
And this is Antique Flowers and Birds designed by Norma Batastini and hooked by Nancy Greene.
Hooked and designed by Lea McCrone it is called Gracie in Brooklyn.
I'll bet you already know who designed this piece....yup, Deanne Fitzpatrick.  It is hooked by Robin Stewart.
This one is designed by Fritz Mitnick and hooked by Laura Pierce.
Ah, 'the Woman who loves Animals' hooked by Edie McClure and designed by Judy Wise.
Lion and Lamb is a recognizable design and is offered by numerous hookers, this one is a pattern offered by Pat Hornafus and hooked by Pat McDonnell.
This is called Seasonal Sampler, is hooked by Linda Woodbury and designed by Kay Leisy.

Sadly I cannot read the name of this design by Bev Conway but it is hooked by Polly Reinhart.
For those of you who have read my blog, you know this is a rug I hooked which is an adaptation by Kathy of Briarwood Folk Art called Big Dog Hollow.
This design below is by Lucille Festa called Sisters and Renia Davis hooked it.  Up close it really does have an antique and naive flavor to it.
Again, if you have been following my blog you know that I hooked the one below.  It is called Red Bird of Pennsylvania and is a design offered by Woodland Junction Primitives.
And yet another hooked by me called Henny Penny and is a design offered by Woolley Fox.
Thanks much for visiting.  And, if you can stand looking at even more rugs from the show I'll post more tomorrow.  Yes, this was a humongous rug show.  I think it was one of the largest.

Funny because I had 14 rugs in the show and someone walked into the class room and asked, "where is this Saundra Porter?"  I put up my hand, she came over and said, "they should have said it was a Saundra Porter rug show".  We had a laugh as I didn't think anyone would really pay attention to who had what in the show or keep count.
