Magdalena Briner Eby Rugs I've Hooked

Friend Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) did a blog post and mentioned me and the Magdalena rugs she is going to show at some venue.  While I might have hooked more Magdalena rugs than her (not sure about that tho) there are many more Magdalena's which I've not yet hooked.

Thought I'd post those Magdalena rugs here now in case there is someone out there who hasn't seen them on my blog yet.  I believe the first one was Domestic Zoo which was hooked 2009.  According to the booklet out on Magdalena, there is some controversy as to whether it really was designed by Magdalena.  Yet there is no other 1800's hooker given credit for it.
The following year (2010) I hooked Magdalena's Dog and Crows.  This is a flash photo which does not represent the true colors of the rug.
Moving right along in the year of 2010 I also hooked McCue Eagle which presently resides at my front door.  It pleases me to see that beauty each day I walk thru the door to go for my walk.  Again the blinking flash destroys the true colors ~ it is not that bright.
Magdalena's Dog was hooked in 2012 at home without a teacher, it is a smallish design so was a piece of cake.
Lollipop Bouquet was hooked in 2013 without a teacher ~ well Magdalena's color plan WAS my teacher and used the wool I had.  Honestly I was hesitating doing this piece because there are 66 circles.  YES, I counted them.  But this rug was the most fun and so many colors can be pulled from your worm (noodle) baggies.
In 2014 Magdalena's Farm was hooked in a Barb Carroll class, which is always a delight.  And as always was happy with my rug after her color planning.
Also in 2014 I hooked the Folkart Horse in a smaller size.
Wow, I was on a Magdalena frenzy in 2014 as I also hooked Olde Ducks.
Harvey's Magdalena was a fun piece to hook and was hooked 2015.
It is among the rugs hanging on the wall in this computer room as well as some others.
In 2017 while perusing some of the auction sites I saw a rug listed and knew immediately it was the missing and undiscovered Magdalena Goat rug the family had spoken of (according to Evelyn).  I immediately emailed my friend Evelyn, sent her the link and it was confirmed to be an authentic Magdalena.  Hell, all it took was a quick look at the rug itself to know who originally hooked it.  So this is the Magdalena Goat and I was the first to offer the pattern and hook it in the original size ~ Evelyn also hooked it.
Some months later I hooked it again in different colors and a smaller size and sold the larger rug.  Per usual the real appearance of this brown goat is NOT that bright.
In 2019 I decided since one Lollipop Bouquet was fun, two would be double the fun.  Again, the flash distorts the color and my rug is NOT this bright and white.  So I hooked the Great Granddaughter's Rug, which until it was donated was in the possession of THE Great Granddaughter of Magdalena.
Here is a photo of the great granddaughter Ellen Jacobs donating the rug to the Historical Society of Perry County, PA.
And then another allusive Magdalena rug (of which I'm sure there are more than the goat and this) pokes its face.  I hooked Lititz Hens in 2019 and it is in front of my sink so get to enjoy it every day.  Once again those colors are not white, it is the flash.
Sheesh, it's been since 2019 that I've hooked a Magdalena rug???  Perhaps that is what should be on my frame next as there are so many more to hook.
If you want to learn more about Magdalena Briner Eby you can buy her booklet .  I don't sell the booklet but am sure you can find it on Amazon.
However I do sell the patterns.  And while not all of them are listed on my web site I've probably drawn them for others in various sizes.  So contact me if there is a Magdalena rug you desire.

Puppy Love

Was busy today shipping a Domestic Zoo pattern to a customer plus drew and shipped a pattern to Polly Minick for her to hook.  Tomorrow I'll be busy drawing another 4 patterns for Polly but she needed one right away.  Later today was able to pull a few loops on the Out of Hand Rug Hookers Challenge which I named Puppy Love.  Not so sure how much will be accomplished tomorrow tho since I'll be busy.
I'm hoping to hook a few cobblestones along the walk and hope that is allowed. I know new motifs aren't allowed in the challenge, only those provided by Lori were to be the motifs in the challenge rugs.

As for the Nantucket Broom Ride, I'm still yarn whipping the last edge and hope to finish that over coffee tomorrow morning.  Then is only the tacking down of the inside edge.  So for sure I'll have this beauty on my harvest table before the weekend.  I'll bore you with another picture of that beautiful rug which happened with a lot of love from a lot of my friends.  Might even give me incentive to scrub my kitchen floor.

Coming soon is to show you what I'll be hooking at rug camp just 11 days and a wake up away.

Have a great evening everyone, and beginning tonight we in Delaware will be hunkered down with LOTS of non-stop rain and am sure many of my readers will be in the same path or has been there already.

Magdalena Rugs I've Hooked

In yesterday's post I mentioned hooking a lot of Magdalena rugs; but not nearly as many as Evelyn Lawrence has.  Evelyn has hooked all rugs attributed to Magdalena Briner Eby that are known to be her design from the 1800's.

The first of Magdalena's designs I hooked was 2008 when I foolishly drew out only one half of the design of 1885 Horses.  What the hell was I thinking?  Well actually do know... I didn't want to hook such a big rug and it appeared long.
So the following year, 2009, what do I hook?  Uh, Domestic Zoo, the largest of Magdalena's rugs or any other rug I hooked so far.  After having seen Evelyn's in a rug show at Cape May I was smitten.
In 2010 hooked Dog and Crows.
Also in 2010 I hooked McCue Eagle.
In 2011 decided to draw a smallish size of Magdalena's Dog and hook that.
Don't know what happened between then and 2014 when I decided to hook Lollipop Bouquet.  Must say it was with a little hesitation I decided to hook it.  Why the hesitation??  Because there were 66 circles which I was dreading.  But of all the Magdalena rugs I've hooked think that one was the most fun.
Then was on a roll during 2014 because I hooked Magdalena's Folk art horse mat size....
...Magdalena's Farm......
.....Magdalena's Olde Ducks.
In 2015 I decided to hook Harvey's Magdalena.  Goodness, what am I going to hook next?  There are so many cool Magdalena rugs left to hook.
Guess I've got to pull out Evelyn's book to see what should be next on my list.  For those of you who may not know, and may have an interest in replicating Magdalena Briner's rugs here is a great book.

Evelyn Lawrence had been researching (and continues to do so) Magdalena's legacy as the most prolific rug hooker of her time.  This is a book well worth the read and the knowledge.
I apologize for not giving you a link to buy this book but blogger is being a huge pain in the arse tonight.  So due to my frustration level will leave it up to you to figure out how to purchase it.

Have a great evening.

Sadly Missing ATHA

All of my close hooking buddies are attending ATHA in Lancaster and I'm not there, sadly.  Since I was at Cape May in September and going to another camp in November there was no way I could afford to have someone care for Ben and me spend money on camps three months in a row.  Wish I had the financial resources to do that but don't.

Anyway, my gal pals are keeping me informed on what happens during the day and what they buy.  And Deb (my friend) who I will see in November has purchased some wool for me and a tee shirt!!!!!!!!!  She even commented when she sent these pictures, that she knew I'd kill her if she didn't pick up one for me too.  And she is right!  So my dear gurlfren picked up one for me and I'll get it early November and wear it with pride.

This is the front.

This is the back.

Here we go again with the photo thing.  Both of these pictures were straight up and perfect when I retrieved them from my photo file.  So now I have no way of correcting the positioning that I am aware of.  But, guess you can get the drift of what the shirt looks like.

Woolley Fox is selling these tee shirts and has a booth which also has Evelyn Lawrence showing the Magdalena rugs.  Man-O-man.... wish I'd seen Evelyn's rugs in person all at once.  I've seen them when on display at Cape May each time she accomplished one but to see them all together at one time must be mind boggling.

I'm envious of all who visited, participated in classes and enjoyed this wonderful event.  And, cannot wait to read every one's blog with pictures and stories.

Mini Rug Show

It is always a treat to see the rug show at Cape May and each year I look forward to seeing what Evelyn Lawrence brings, as I love her style and see more antique rugs she has discovered.  She hooked Animal Farm and the Hen and Chicks and I just love the Hen and Chicks but the photo just doesn't do the colors and hooking justice.

My friend Deb hooked Magdalena's Double Horses brought it for the show.

And here is Magdalena's Dog, a rug hooked by Pat Foster.

And since we are making representations of the wonderful designs of Magdalena Briner, even tho I have posted it previous, here is the one I took to Cape May because I finished it during the past year.

I've more rug pictures to post and will do those in the next day or two.  Hope you enjoyed the mini rug show from Cape May.

Magdalena Briner

I became enamoured with Magdalena Briner rugs since my friend Evelyn Lawrence first introduced me to her designs.  Evelyn launched her book on the subject at Sauder Village this past week and I only wish I could have been there to see them up close and personal myself and to congratulate Evelyn for her accomplishments.

So far I have hooked 3 of her designs:  Domestic Zoo (the long runner), Dog with Crows and the Eagle.  It would be very difficult to pick out my favorite of those but guess my favorite would be the one I was hooking at the time.  I'm going to do an experiment and post a picture of the original  Magdalena Eagle rug which was on display at Sauder and the post a picture of the one I hooked to see how far off I was in trying to capture the original look.

Here is Magdalena's original:

And now the one I hooked, which was the third and last rug of Magdalena's I hooked:

Here is the Domestic Zoo rug I hooked, which was the first Magdalena rug I hooked (pattern can be purchased from my web site, www.woodlandjunctionprimitives.com ).

And the Dog and Crows rug was the second one I did:

I do have plans to hook the dog next ~ well I say next but it will be after I return home from Cape May rug camp where I'll be hooking something else entirely.  Since when hooking the Magdalena rugs it requires bits and pieces of wool it is best to hook that at home so I can dig into my worm bag for oddball pieces.  After all, Magdalena used what she had and while hooking the others would often say out loud, "Magdalena, guess that is all you had at the time so you hooked that color right there".

Here are two more original Magdalena rugs which were on display at Sauder.  I sure do want to hook this dog soon.
And then Magdalena's red horse original:

To all of you who were there to see the rug show and the wonderful rugs of Patty Yoder and Magdalena Briner, it must have been a goose bump day seeing these magnificent works of art history.

Sauder Village

Unfortunately I was not in attendance at Sauder Village even tho I was given advance information that there would be some original Magdalena Briner rugs as well as some of Patty Yoder.  So I begged and pleaded with anyone who attended to please take pictures so that I might enjoy them from afar.  Thanks to Phyllis (who is the host of RughookersYahoo) she posted this picture trail so that those of us who were unable to go could enjoy the show as well.  Here is Phyllis' blog:  http://rughooker.blogspot.com/ so that you my enjoy it as well.

Must say that even tho some of the pictures were fuzzy I still got goosebumps when Magdalena's rugs and Patty's rug appeared on the screen.  While my personal collection of rugs lends itself to wide cut primitive style, I did see some rugs which were excellent and as a hooker who has also done fine cut can appreciate the work involved.  And as a rug hooking teacher I had (Bev Conway) said more than once...."Color gets all the credit but it is value which does all the work".

Enjoy the picturetrail everyone.

Domestic Zoo

Here is a picture of my Domestic Zoo.  The original rug which was designed and hooked by Magdalena Briner around 1890 measured 24" by 70".  Mine measures 22 1/2" x 65 1/2" and trust me when I say it was heavy enough to work on with those measurements.  I don't know how people can hook room size rugs comfortably.

Magdalena hooked images she was exposed to and which were in the world which surrounded her.  I still find looking at the rug very interesting but sure wish that Magdalena was here so I could ask her exactly what some of those shapes were.  I can only guess.  I can see several leaves, two snakes, cats, dogs, chickens, birds, donkey, horse.  Some appear to be cherries, pear, an apple cut in half, and there are hearts near some of the animals which makes me think they were her prized or favorite or perhaps pets she was memorializing.  It looks like one of the snakes may have been after the bird.  But again, I can only guess and imagine what was going on in Magdalena's mind as she drew the rug out.

And, for all of my Magdalena rugs I have made a label so that years from now if mine is found tucked away somewhere it will be known it is not an antique and people will know it is not the same dimensions as the original.  I feel it is important to give Magdalena credit and that the true size of her original works be known.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about Magdalena
