More Rugs on the Walls

Not only did I put more rugs on the walls but found a better place for heirlooms from my wonderful Step-father Edward C. Patterson (Pat).  Here is an after photo of memories of Pat's military history during his time at Camp David.  Those memories include gifts from President Eisenhower and The Kennedy's for Christmas and documents.
Over to the right side of the photo on the shelf is a photo of Pat, the Presidential Seal and Presidential patch he wore when on duty at Camp David.  The photo below is an award of Service from LBJ and below is a photo of Pat saluting President Eisenhower and President De Gaulle of France exiting a helicopter.  That photo was taken April 24, 1960 as Pat noted on the back of the photo.
A before photo of the wall which looks totally naked in comparison.
The wall to the left has just two rugs with the before photo.  Left is Fat Dog a design by Tonya Robey and on the right of the door is Crow Sampler by Kindred Spirits.
And now with additional rugs... the Early Bird is a pattern by Spruce Ridge but I made a change and added the framing on the left and right of the design.  On the right side of the door is a sheep pattern by Woolley Fox.
There is a third wall in the office which needs attention but haven't decided which rugs to put there yet.  That fourth wall has two floor-to-ceiling bookcases and a window so no rugs will go there.
I've rugs to hang in the kitchen and living room as well as relocating the Shadow Memorial  from the computer room to my bedroom with my other departed fur babies.

OH, if you were waiting for my version of connecting the 'seasonal mats' from the previous post, don't hold your breath.  I've decided not to pursue that project for a couple reasons but mostly because the blocks have different background colors and cannot think of a good framing color which wouldn't either get lost because of value or wouldn't be an attractive match.  However, it was a wonderful thought-provoking question by Gail.

Welcome 2021

Happy New Year, at least I hope it is a happier year than 2020 was. This rug is called New Years Eve but wanted to save it for the post today since I'm showing the projects hooked during 2020.  Believe it or not I hooked 15 projects during the hibernation ~ quarantine ~ shut-down ~ or whatever name you wish to give it.
The first rug hooked in the beginning of 2020 Was Winter Sled, a Cushing design which was kindly given away to me by Cathy of Acorn Hollow.
In preparation for February's Valentines Day my next project was Heart Butter Mold by Primitive Heartstrings.
I had Lori Brechlin's Lancaster Barnyard pattern for a couple years and finally it moved to the top of my list.
Posies and Stars is an antique adaptation I hooked and offer in pattern form and still love it.  Was attracted to this antique because of the blotchy background as well as the neutral hit and miss border.  It still makes my heart skip a beat.
After a few days of harsh winds the rug on my frame next was  a pattern I saw on Cushing's web site and purchased it immediately.  It is aptly called Windy Day and will be my March display again this year.
By this time I wanted something which didn't need much concentration and decided to use up some neutral but various value wool and drew Cat's Paw.

With spring near it was time to hook Lori Brechlin's Early bird, a pattern offered by Spruce Ridge Studios.  Confession is that I did do a little change by making the border all the way around instead of the top and bottom.
Was time for me to get back to my love of antique adaptations so chose one I named Bespectacled Lion.  Again it is the blotchy background but also the quirky naïve appearance of the lion.  Would love to know about the person who drew and hooked this many years ago.
Was comfortable to be working on antique adaptations again and what luck to find an antique patriotic themed rug, right up my alley.  The original was hooked around 1830 and I named it Pride, Honor, Freedom.
Saw Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) hooking this adorable pattern called Jack's Crow and had to have one for myself. It's a design by Terri Leamer of Winter Cottage Studio.  I couldn't wait to hook those pants with the left over wool strips from a Polly Minick pattern and think one day I'll hook it again with different colors since it was a PDF pattern.
The months are moving right along with me in the cocoon and time to finally hook Old Tom, a Lori Brechlin design.
Good heavens, my fingers are getting tired and getting vertigo from flipping from PC to flash drive, finding the pictures, yada yada.  But am almost..uh, almost done.

Then on Facebook Lori posts a photo of a design called Merrie October 31st and a couple of us went nuts.  Kris accommodated us with a smaller version to our liking and this is what mine looks like.
Another PDF pattern I'd had for years was a Karen Kahle pattern named Woolly Santa.  Each year I'd tell myself to hook it but years flew by and decided it was time!!!!!  Again I made a change to the design to suit me and didn't hook the top sheep sticking out of Santa's sack.  Instead chose to hook Santa's mittens black to fool the eyes to see the sheep's legs.  I'm happy with my decision.
In chronological order New Years Eve would have been next but I placed it first since it is New Years Day.  But after that was Over the Moon, a pattern offered by Spruce Ridge Studio.  As you can see it still isn't' completely bound.  If I were one to make 'new years resolutions' it would be to be faster at binding my rugs; but then I DON'T make new years resolutions.
If you are interested in purchasing a pattern offered by me, you can look for them in the link below.  Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year.   My black eyed peas and salad are waiting for me as cooking them and doing this blog has taken longer than planned.

Unveiling Early Bird

Okay, get ready for the big surprise.  I fell head over heels for Early Bird pattern at Cape May and had to bring the pattern home.  It is designed by Lori Brechlin and sold by Spruce Ridge Studios.  It was great as designed but when I started pulling loops had a different vision for my finished rug ~ I wanted framing all around.

Kris always draws her patterns with a nice margin beyond the design so used that plus an added piece of cotton to the left and right side for ease of hooking.
Below is the photo of the Kris' hooked Early Bird.  I like her textured wool for the bird's breast much better than what I used.  Also like her angled tail feathers.....maybe I'll change mine.
TGIF for all you worker bees, for me it is just another weekend day.

Get'n There Slowly

Just started to hook the letters EARLY BIRD but at least the top part of the rug is done.  I've made another change ~ what's new?  Well, it is actually more of a 'creative license' sorta thing and will save that as a surprise for the next update.
With non-essential businesses closing my pre-scheduled hair cut for April 14th was cancelled so haven't had a hair cut since March 3.  But finally Delaware shops can open in June and have an appointment for June 3rd.  They can only have one person at a time in the shop. I'm beginning to look like the wild woman of the woods with my bushy hair.

I've not worn any makeup since the shutdown because when leaving the house to go to the grocery store I'm wearing a mask.  Also haven't put on a pair of jeans in months so am positive those won't fit when the self-quarantine ends.

Am still making my own sprouts and hands down do prefer the Broccoli Sprout Seeds to the Alfalfa.
Despite still eating healthy meals I've put on a few pounds.  Largely due to eating more peanuts and pretzels than I'm working off.  Which means I'll either need to walk/exercise more OR greatly reduce my intake of snacks.  When going to a rug camp I usually come home with about 2 pounds heavier but have always taken it off within a week of coming home.  Uh, I'm home and it hasn't left yet. 😒

Hopefully the economy will get back on track soon with the opening of businesses ~ for those who haven't lost everything already.  One business in Ocean City, MD (Fish Tails) has a creative way for customers to social distance using "bumper tables".
Happy hooking and stay safe.

Early Bird Update

Had intended to post an update yesterday but it was grass cutting day and laundry needed to be done.  By the time those chores were completed all I wanted to do was sit and hook.  And, sad to say I've been a couch potato all day and worked on Early Bird.  You'd think I'd be done with it by now but nope.

Early Bird is adapted from the artwork of Lori Brechlin and sold as a rug hooking pattern by Spruce Ridge Studios.  This is what it looks like now.
Remember that 'glitch' I spoke about in a previous post?   This is what I was referring to ~ the tail feathers.  Kris' hooked version starting with brown and ended with black.  But I had a space open and since I was already stressed for losing a beautiful photo blew the issue out of proportion and stopped working on it...uh briefly.
When I went back to the rug all I did was rip out the black, moved it up in the space and hooked a bottom row of brown; no big deal Saundra, what was all the fuss about..duh?  It was losing the photo of Janet Reid's beautiful rug.  But thanks to a friend I've acquired a replacement.

Back to Early Bird....another thing I did was pull out the more intense orange and replaced it with the softer version of the same color.  See below when I showed you my options in the beginning of this project.
AND....another thing 😁 I pulled out the yellow beak and replaced it with the textured you see in the first photo.

For those who are wondering, I'm using #8.5 strips except for that white around the eye.  I've more work to do before attacking the words as I'd like to get the background done before tackling the bottom.

In a couple days I'll post a photo of my bound Cat's Paw so if any one is working on one and would like me to share it on my blog, please send me a photo.  If you would like to start a new project during this 'stay at home' time check out my initial INVITATION.

It was a breezy and cooler Sunday than yesterday but suspect that when the heat is turned on outside it will crank up big time.  Hope all of you stay safe and are feeling well.

New Project

Am happily pulling loops again.  It's a good thing I've a hobby (habit) which is creative and entertaining during this self-quarantine period.  Cannot image those who have no interests whether it be handiwork, reading, gardening or other form of creativity while being stuck at home.

This is on my frame...Early Bird, a design by Lori Brechlin and sold by Spruce Ridge Studio.  Just couldn't find the proper Robin breast color in my stash.  But found this orange which had little black threads running thru it and hoped it would work.
But later wondered if this more bland orange would be better. It does have more of a softness to it whereas the first photo has a hard bright color.  Yes, they're very similar in color so I'll work elsewhere and think on it before ripping out or continuing.
You know me always second-guessing my choices.  Now it is the beak which is too close in value to the background.  Perhaps a thin cornrowing of a soft color between them will do the job.

More on the entertainment news.....I subscribe to Comcast cable and Starz used to be part of my lineup until this year.  I was NOT willing to spend even more money per year to have that channel so refused.  Which meant I was no longer able to record Outlander.  BUT, this week during the "Watchathon" I'm able to watch Season 5 for free.  So I'll be binge watching a couple episodes every day to get caught up.

Now What?

I've recently finished the sweet design Windy Day and almost finished hooking the Cat's Paw I drew.  It's getting almost to panic time as I don't know what to hook next.  There are several already drawn patterns in my stash, some PDF patterns I could draw out myself and a couple designs in the making but nothing definitive.  Will show you a few of those patterns.

It would be much easier to hook pattern already here ~ One is Early Bird, designed by Lori Brechlin and purchased from Spruce Ridge Studios.
Also have a small version of Mary Comstock's Bed Rug,  a pattern on linen by Frontier Homestead.
Two others which would be easy choices are Lori Brechlin's Wool Witch PDF.
Or When Pigs Fly, also in PDF format.  Hmm, maybe this one would be more fun in the fall.
Then a design in progress which was started about two weeks ago and I'm frozen in time....the pieces of paper drawings are still laying on top of my table.  I've temporarily lost interest in that although I was totally focused for a while.  Using a phrase from Lauren "I've the attention span of a gnat".

There are also 15 other already drawn patterns in my stash to choose from which won't require drawing out.  I've grass to cut but before that I've limbs and pine cones to pick up after the recent horrid wind.  That will give me time to ponder what will go on my frame when the Cat's Paw is done.

Happy sunny Saturday to you and hoping everyone is well and stays safe.

Cape May Rug Show #2

Started naming all the photos but it got tiresome so stopped to at least do a blog post today.

Anchors Away designed and hooked by Cindi Stinson.
The antique geometric below was by Kris Miller, and while it wasn't bound wasn't in the show but wanted to let you see it anyway.
The Early Bird pattern below is a Lori Brechlin design and hooked by Kris Miller of Spruce Ridge Studio.  Thought it was cute so purchased the pattern.
The Scarecrow pattern was hooked by Susanne Robinson.
The pattern A Little Birdie Told Me was hooked by my gal pal Deb Nees.
Wildflower Trellis hooked by Sally Raub.
Roots was hooked by Fern Strong.
Kim McWilliams designed and hooked Best Witches.
Play Ball was hooked by Ingrid Hieronimus.
The ball was hooked by Kris McDermet and the blocks hooked by Norma and Kay Ballenger for Norma Batastini's new booklet.
This cat design below I know was a Patsy Becker design and hooked by Norma Batastini.
Okay, this is the post for today and still more rugs to come on another day.
