Over The Moon

Finally pulled the last loops on Over the Moon so the binding will begin.  As I hate that part of hooking it will go at a snail's pace ~ that is unless someone is interesting in buying it for a 'little one" for Christmas.  Well,  make that a little one's room.  If so then I'd speed up that binding process.

I hadn't really planned on selling it and was going to put it on the wall in the office but can't keep all the rugs and I do have favorites.  Guess I'll have to use more discretion when choosing to buy or draw patterns.

Once, a rug hooker got angry at me for listing some rugs on eBay for only $85 per sq. ft.  She said I was doing a disservice to the professionalism of rug hookers.  Well, am doing it again and sometimes even less than that on my new FB page.

The water in my yard has still not dried up and it is raining yet again.  Santa...please bring me a boat for Christmas.

Get'n There Slowly

Just started to hook the letters EARLY BIRD but at least the top part of the rug is done.  I've made another change ~ what's new?  Well, it is actually more of a 'creative license' sorta thing and will save that as a surprise for the next update.

With non-essential businesses closing my pre-scheduled hair cut for April 14th was cancelled so haven't had a hair cut since March 3.  But finally Delaware shops can open in June and have an appointment for June 3rd.  They can only have one person at a time in the shop. I'm beginning to look like the wild woman of the woods with my bushy hair.

I've not worn any makeup since the shutdown because when leaving the house to go to the grocery store I'm wearing a mask.  Also haven't put on a pair of jeans in months so am positive those won't fit when the self-quarantine ends.  

Am still making my own sprouts and hands down do prefer the Broccoli Sprout Seeds to the Alfalfa.  

Despite still eating healthy meals I've put on a few pounds.  Largely due to eating more peanuts and pretzels than I'm working off.  Which means I'll either need to walk/exercise more OR greatly reduce my intake of snacks.  When going to a rug camp I usually come home with about 2 pounds heavier but have always taken it off within a week of coming home.  Uh, I'm home and it hasn't left yet. 😒

Hopefully the economy will get back on track soon with the opening of businesses ~ for those who haven't lost everything already.  One business in Ocean City, MD (Fish Tails) has a creative way for customers to social distance using "bumper tables".

Throw Back Thursday (EDITED)

Since I've run into a little glitch while hooking Early Bird I'll do a flash back to Cape May 2014.  Don't worry, I promise to show you the glitch and what I do to fix my problem in my next post.

Stepping back in time to September 2014, Ali Strebel was my teacher that year.   The first task  in the class was doing a sampler of stitches.  Ali handed out pieces of linen to each of us and a few strips of wool in various colors.  I still have my sampler but since it isn't as organized or pretty as my pal Deb's I stole a picture of hers to show, albeit upside down.

Here is Ali demonstrating something but can't tell or remember just what it was.

Notice the gal above in navy blue (Elaine Copeman), she is the one who hooked Bertha at the Beach piece below.  This is a hoot and she did a magnificent job.

Some Ohio gals were there, but sadly not Lauren, and they seemed to love picking on me.  Hey, I'm easy to pick on, what can I say.

The Give Ye Thanks piece on the left was hooked by pal Deb Nees, a Lori Brechlin design and sold by Spruce Ridge Studio.  

Thanks to friend Joan Strausbaugh I now have a photo of Give Ye Thanks hooked by Janet Reid.  Notice the the Pink Cancer Ribbon on her door.  I believe this was Janet's way of expressing her THANKS for being in remission.

You can spot a Cheri Reid hooked rug a mile away.  Here are only three which were in the rug show.  The Red Lion Inn was huge so took two photos so you could enjoy the entirety of it.  The first photo shows the top which was heavily reinforced for it to hang properly .

Last but not least is a photo of some gals enjoying the fine weather hooking on the porch.  Am hoping Cape May will be happening again this September.

I didn't show all the rugs from the show as I've other things to do this afternoon.  Have wasted so much time trying to recover the photos, searching the archives on previous blog posts to find Janet's rug to no avail.  And including trying several times to edit the color changes in this post.  Frustration!!!!!

Again, if anyone has a photo of Janet's Give Ye Thanks rug please send me a copy.  Since Janet is no longer with us I'd like to have that as a fond memory of her struggle.  I believe that rug was her Giving Thanks for being in remission.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Wishing all of you a very happy THANKSGIVING.   I will spend Thanksgiving at my son's house as he grabbed the torch in holiday cooking which used to be mine.  My dear Daughter-in-Love is quite pleased with that arrangement and she doesn't object the clean up afterwards.  

I've hooked only two rugs with a turkey.  The one below was in a Needle'love publication a few years ago.  I think this was hooked in 2007.

Turkey and Tallowberries by Lori Brechlin and sold by Kris Miller was hooked in 2016.

In my pattern stash is Old Tom so perhaps it will be hooked in time for Thanksgiving next year.

Cape May Rug Show #2

Started naming all the photos but it got tiresome so stopped to at least do a blog post today.

Anchors Away designed and hooked by Cindi Stinson.

The antique geometric below was by Kris Miller, and while it wasn't bound wasn't in the show but wanted to let you see it anyway.

The Early Bird pattern below is a Lori Brechlin design and hooked by Kris Miller of Spruce Ridge Studio.  Thought it was cute so purchased the pattern.

The Scarecrow pattern was hooked by Susanne Robinson. 

The pattern A Little Birdie Told Me was hooked by my gal pal Deb Nees.

Wildflower Trellis hooked by Sally Raub.

Roots was hooked by Fern Strong.

Kim McWilliams designed and hooked Best Witches.

Throwback Thursday

Turning the calendar back to 2017 you will see a few photos from rug camp in Cape May, NJ.   Rugs by the Sea is a great camp organized and hosted by Norma Batastini and Linda Woodbury.  

That year I was in Cammie Bruce's class; here is a group photo of the students with Cammie in front.  

This is the Victorian Chalfonte Hotel where classes are held and our home for 5 days.  My friends and I have climbed the narrow steps all the way to the Cupola many times.  It is quite fun to view the area from above.

Americana Stars is a design by Cammie.  It is a combination of hooked rug and wool applique border/edge.  Definitely an attractive design with that edge but too much trouble for me.  I don't like binding rugs in any form and this beauty would be even more time consuming.

Friend Evelyn hooked this Hutchinson style Mermaid rug.

Marilyn is a huge rug hooked by friend Cheri and is complete with real fur, as you can see.

Stubbs Horse Trainer was hooked by  me and unfortunately I still haven't hung it on my wall.  Was just thinking about that last night.

I know we all like to see how different people hook the same design.  So here is an antique adaptation Red Lion and we all three chose to hook our version close to the original antique.

There's my contribution for 'throw back Thursday' this week.  Now to go out and pick up limbs in preparation of hopefully starting the mower to cut the enclosed part of the back yard.

November... REALLY?

Cannot believe it is November already.  Am sure most of you agree with my sentiments.  Today the Halloween rugs and decorations were removed and replaced with Turkey and Tallowberries on the harvest table.

Okay admit I was too lazy to take a photo of the harvest table but am trying to get ready for rug camp and still have stuff to do here.

Turkey and Tallowberries is a design by Lori Brechlin and pattern sold by Spruce Ridge Studios.

Enjoy this mild temperature on the east coast while it lasts.  Haven't packed my suitcase as the weather is going to change.  It was in the 70's and going to change..... to what?

Pattern has a Name and Newbie Lesson

If you are a follower of my blog you will recall reading the Kopp book described this antique mat as "having a ray-like flower".  Struggling for a name to give the pattern the only flower I could think of which had ray or spike like petals was Bee Balm.

Thanks to Julie the pattern now has a name.  She suggested "Radiant Flower".  How appropriate as it makes reference to a RAY-like flower in the name.  This is what has been accomplished so far.  The color of the flower and hooked arch isn't orange; it is salmon.

I'm so into this rug that all I want to do is sit and hook but cannot be immobile for too long as I get ants in my pants so move about doing something...anything.

Okay newbies, I've a hint for you to tuck away in your cranium for future reference.  When pulling wool to hook this design I only had half yard of Spruce Ridge Teal which I wanted for the border.  It was a wool purchased around 2011 from the Wool Studio .  I wrote Rebecca but she didn't have any left in stock.  

Planning smart decided to cut up what I had in #8.5 and spread it out along the four sides of the design figuring on at least 4 times calculations for my cut.  Then divided the four sides into baggies.

As you can see the 'short side' baggie is almost empty but still has a strip of wool in there so had some left from the planning.  Now I'm working on the 'long side' baggie top right and have little more hooking to finish that side but will have enough.

However, there is inside background to use a teal.  I've some stash which will work and will use, but.... decided to reach out to see if anyone had at least another half yard of Spruce Ridge Teal wool.  AH HA!  Well of course there was someone.... Mrs. Spruce Ridge herself Kris Miller.  Today I received another yard purchased from Kris; thanks Kris for coming to my rescue.  Am so glad to have more because it is a beautiful piece of wool ...here it is below.

So if you are in need of some beautiful teal, or if you would like to hook this design you know where to get teal.  OH, by the way, another secret to newbies who want to make a rug look old..... I used the cut wool with the light edge at the very edge of the four sides.  It gives the edge of the rug appear scuffed and worn.

Hooked Rug Review from 2016

Here is a review of all the rugs and mats which were hooked during 2016 and posted in order of project.  Those who recently joined may not have seen them but regular followers may have seen them numerous times in various stages of progress, reverse hooking and tweaking.

In the beginning of 2016 this is what was on my frame.

It was originally drawn as "Flag Day Sheep", a Woolley Fox design but I changed it up a tad.

Above was an antique adaptation of an antique which I call "Horse with No Name" and it had straight hooking.  Just a small mat but was fun to hook and use worms.

Still in the mood for small mats and adaptations decided to use the horse shape from an antique rug but added the bunny since there was space.

And then the Out of Hand Rug Hookers group decided on a new challenge lead by Kelley Belfast.  

Kelley designed a pattern with daffodils, sheep and two out buildings. There was certain criteria to be part of the 'giveaway' and the winner was voted on by the participants.  It was quite fun to see all the different and artistic works from hookers who have different color  and cut choices.

Next on my frame was a design by Barb Carroll called Rainbow Cabin. This pattern had been in my stash for a while so decided to use up my patterns.  Uh..... if I were to have a 'do over' I'd make those white areas dark logs and the thin dark rows the light.  What the hell was I thinking???  Oh well.  To Kim.... NO, I'm not going to tweak it!!!!!!!!

After the Rainbow Cabin decided to start a Christmas gift for my grandson.  So his Christmas gift was started very early on to give me time to set it aside and hook something different.  

But going to rug camps I'd start something different and hook on Zach's rug while waiting my turn for the teacher.

The above pattern by Karen Kahle called "Simple Gifts" was a pattern purchased at a rug camp from someone wanting to downsize.  Since I had no clue where to start or what colors I'd want decided to take it to my mentor beloved Barb Carroll.  Looking at it makes me happy and like looking at a brand new bright day ahead.

Then came NED, another antique adaptation offered by Woolley Fox. Poor Ned went thru many tweaks until I was happy with him.  In retrospect tho, wish I'd done what Lauren did and change the butterfly to a flower.

Another design by Lori and hooked in a class with Kris Miller is the "Do Good Be Nice" design.  That Goode witch takes time out of her day to have her nails done.

The last two rugs started and finished in 2016 were the last two written about yesterday. .... Red Lion adaptation......
