HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Today has been cloudy and rainy.  It is to rain all thru the night and prediction for this eastern shore area is between 1"-3" of rain.  At least it isn't snow, yet.

Wishing all of you a happy Thanksgiving.  Here are a few turkey rugs I've hooked.  The 1847 turkey was from a Need'l Love booklet and color planned in my first Lucille Festa class.  There is no last initial hooked in the rug as I was being divorced from and planning to take the last name Porter back and relinquishing the name Slagle.  He didn't want me so I didn't want his last name.  Yeah, I know, more information than you needed, lol.

Turkey and Tallowberries designed by Lori Brechlin and sold by Spruce Ridge Studios.  This one I hooked at home around 2016.

Old Tom is another pattern with the Lori and Kris collaboration.  I hooked this one at home too but not as happy with my color selection even the second time around.  If you want to look at poor Old Tom's before life you can see it HERE.

Turkey Shoot

Translated means 'turkey photo'.  Pulled the last loop on Old Tom twice now and not going for a third.  So let's see now and the before.

This is the current look of Old Tom, a wiser 'old' Tom now that he has a few years and experience under his belt.

Here is a picture of the much younger and wild crazy Tom of his then generation.  My goodness but I think me likes that older Tom better than his younger self.  And most assuredly better than the naked plucked Tom you previous saw on my blog.

So happy I decided to pull the loops now instead of suffering thru a couple years of not using it, and it is a better representation of the design.  WHEW, so glad the redux is done and now to start binding as November is just a few days away.

REBOOT

When your PC freezes up or a function stops working you 'reboot', right?  Likewise when a hooking project goes awry it makes sense to do that too.  That's what I'm doing with Old Tom.  

Yesterday I picked it up to start the binding process, it had been over a month since holding it and suddenly didn't like those colors I really great in the beginning.  Some of Tom's feathers have been plucked and will rehook them.  More wool might be pulled out later, depends on how it goes.  NOTE:  some folks thought I'd hooked the turkey white but that is with all his feathers pulled awaiting his new growth.

Thought I'd show you progress on Wooly Santa, the background and border wool.  If you scroll down to see the original version you'd notice I didn't choose a blue sky background.

Have always like the color of the plaid wool but despite having it for several years ago from a jobber in Baltimore.  Hadn't used it because it is slippery, there must be some cashmere in it.  Decided to use it anyway because it worked well with the border color.  Can't remember where that wool was purchased but now wish I had more.  The white is what was used for the sheep.  You can see a better photo of it if you scroll down thru previous posts.

It appears there really is to be a rug camp November 8th.  Which means I must get cranking to get my pattern and wool ready.  This is the design I'm going to  hook in a class with Bev Conway.  The Pattern is called New Years Eve from the artwork of Lindsay Bowles and you can get yours HERE.

      I still haven't changed Santa's eyes and mouth from the frown to a happy face, so do I put that on my list?

Been thinking about this 'list' thing.  I've other projects started (star quilt about 5 years or so since I worked on it), stitchery projects in similar status as I just stumbled upon them the other day when looking for something else.  Maybe if I pulled them out where I could see them every day just seeing them would be my incentive.  

I'm  glad that lists work for Lauren, but if I felt the need to keep a project list think I'd keep it near where I work on them, put it on my fridge or pin it to a cork board in my wool room.  Makes no sense to me to need to look on my iPad to see what has to be done to what when .

One list I constantly do is my Grocery list.  I keep on the kitchen counter and put items on it when I run low or run out of something.  Sad thing is I sometimes forget to take it to the store.  So I'm going to NIX this list thing because I'm sure you'd rather I just get straight to the point and post photos and progress  instead of reviewing my list.  😉

After Hooking Comes Binding

Merrie October is all hooked and needs binding.  Yet it still feels a little unbalanced with the color orange even tho I tried to put some orange in the ground.

Initially I did try introduce fall colors in the leaves but that seemed to distract from the design so decided to make the leaves green.

Have finally bound Jack's Crow...

... and Old Tom still needs binding as well.  Since October comes before Thanksgiving I'll bind Merrie October next despite the fact Old tom was hooked first.  By the way, Old Tom really doesn't look this bright in person.

It Is Folk Art .....Right?

Had this Old Tom pattern (design by Lori Brechlin and offered by Spruce Ridge Studios) for a few years now.  Each fall when someone posts a picture of theirs I want to  hook it but usually have something else on my frame.  This year IT is on my frame.

Full disclosure....didn't use the wool I yanked out of Kris' hands at a rug camp planned for the turkey.  While contemplating background color (primitive black) my mind went to brassy gold for Old Tom.  Guess I'm in a 'bold gold' mood.  

Perhaps Old Tom looks more like a Durkey (duck/turkey) but I'm happy. Like I said...it is folk art, right? 

Will hook the letters next, more background and then fiddle with the tail feathers.  The two rows of border will be decided after the letters and tail feathers are done.  I already pulled out and replaced the last row of wing wool and might re-hook it with some of the same dark plaid to define it better.

Flashback Friday

I'm flashing back to 2015 at Rugs By the Sea in Cape May where Deb and I were in yet another Kris Miller class.  Hey, always a great time with Kris.

 Above is a Mermaid rug entitled Catch a Falling Star.  If you want to see who a rug was designed or hooked by just double-click the photo and it should enlarge.

Ya know how we all take pride in our first hooked rug?  Well take a look at the first rug hooked by 85 year old Dorothy Marcus.  You read that right ~ 85 years old and it appears she was a student of Michelle Micarelli.

Helter Skelter was a collaborative effort of hooking by Cheri Reid and another artist but can't see the name.  I know you want to ask but I don't know for certain...  am guessing Cheri hooked a piece and it was glued to a piece of canvas which was then painted by the artist.

The rug above was designed and hooked by Linda Woodbury named Manatee and Me.  She had an interesting story of her trip to tell me about it also.

Noah's Ark was hooked by Norma Batastini for her grandson.  The ark is a pouch where the animals could be stored and Norma could hook other animals to add to the fun.

Old Tom is a design by Lori Brechlin and hooked by Kris Miller.  I've had this pattern for a few years and still haven't hooked it....YET.  This past November in another Kris Miller class she was showing the class a piece of wool she used on the turkey.  

Kris said she didn't think she would ever sell a piece of the yardage of that plaid.   That is until she showed where the plaid was hooked into the turkey.  Kris had only a couple fat quarters left and as she was talking I grabbed it out of her hands and added it to my purchases.  True story, yanked it right out of her hands.

Goodness, I've more rug show left and other stories but think I'll hold it until tomorrow.  So check back for more rug hooking fun.

So Now What??

I've looked thru my pattern stash and have a few options to consider. All the patterns are delightful but not all are speaking to me with the same strength.  Here are the ones dangling like a carrot.

I have Old Tom which is a great design and just had to own it.

But have Turkey and Tallowberries which is beckoning me more with that blotchy 'make do' background.  For you who have followed me for a while know that makes my heart sing.  As you can see, both of these are designs offered by Spruce Ridge Studios and are patterns from the art work of Lori Brechlin.

Also on my short list of patterns to hook now is Olde Hearts, an antique adaptation pattern offered by Woolley Fox.

Got totally beyond bored with hooking the hit and miss small mat but did accomplish this.  So back into the UFO section as a loner to await being rescued when once again there is nothing new planned for my frame.  At least there is some comfort to know there is something waiting in the wings when I need a hooker fix.

Whew, am so glad that yesterday I chose to cut all my grass rather than break it up into two days.  Yesterday was low humidity but after using the push mower for Ben's back yard thought about saving the riding mower until today.  HA!  Humid like a sauna out there so glad it was all done yesterday.

What to Hook Next

Was content working on my grandson's rug after finishing up Simple Gifts but now am needing something else to hook for relaxation.  There are presently 31 drawn patterns in my stash from which I could choose. Problem is I'm not in the mood for some of them...at least not right now.  But perusing the list here are the ones I'm currently thinking about starting....SOON.

One I'm interested in is Ned, a Woolley Fox design, and this is hooked by Barb Carroll.  I took a picture of it at her home one May.  Seeing another hooked version on Rugs and Pugs  renewed my interest in this design.

I also have the above pattern named Have you Any Wool, another Woolley Fox design.  This one was hooked by my friend Deb.

One year at Cape May I purchased Turkey and Tallowberies which I love.  It is a Lori Brechlin design sold by Kris Miller of Spruce Ridge Studios.

Also purchased Old Tom from Kris; so have two turkey rugs in my stash.

In September I will be hooking Be Goode Be Nice (above), another Lori Brechlin design and will have Kris Miller as my teacher and should be done in time for Halloween I think. And if not, I'll be in the 'hallows eve' mood and inspiration on my lap.

Moon Over Vermont is a Lucille Festa design which is also folded in a drawer of pattern stash.  Definitely like this one too.  Love the bird larger in comparison to the house, the moon with a dangling star.

See that gorgeous rug above which was hooked by Barb?  It is a design by Emma Lou Lais which Barb hooked called "Moose on the Loose".  No, this pattern isn't in my stash but when at Cape May one year purchased a moose design from Bev Conway called..." On the Loose".  Bev's is a bit different and if anyone has hooked Bev's version I'd love to see the choices other hookers made with color selection.

When at Barb's last month I purchased a little wool for the Olde Hearts pattern you see above.  Of course it is another Woolley Fox design and Barb hooked this one.  After she first hooked it a few years ago I was in love and it haunted me until finally purchasing the pattern several months ago.

In my stash is an old design drawn on burlap.  You read right...burlap, and guess that is why I never hooked it.  It is #227 Primitive Horse when Margaret Lutz had Hook Nook that I purchased it.  So I might put it on linen and hook that.  It is a Lib Callaway design which is now being offered by Jeanne Benjamin.

OMG, do you see that gorgeous very LONG Stubbs Runner at the top?  I have that design in my stash too and it is huge.  This one I'm thinking of hooking this winter after Christmas.  This would be a great winter project and one which I've admired at Barbs for years.

And if that weren't enough on my list 'to hook' out of the 31 rug patterns, here is one my friend Deb gave me.  She must have loved the design because she bought it twice.  It is called "Gossip" and is yet another design of Woolley Fox.  The design reminds us of a metal sculpture in the Woolley Cottage.  

This one above is what Deb started at Barb's last May.  Deb made a few changes and made one bird an oriole since they are Orioles fans.  Not sure what other liberties she took.

Guess you are all wondering what other patterns I must have in my stash.  In the past I have sold some to weed out the piles because my interests change and what was purchased on a whim no longer interests me later.

Funny thing is that Simple Gifts was purchased last year on a whim at the November camp and ended up hooking it this May with Barb. 

So you're right Kim, I'm a fickle hooker and can't believe anything I say about what is on the frame next.  Guess you've been busy hooking since getting your paper done and the grass all cut.
