SEPTEMBER 1st ALREADY?

Good grief, time goes by too quickly.  Plans were to post an update on Deer and Blue House...BUT...I didn't accomplish as much on it as planned since I worked outside this morning and halfway filled up the dumpster with more pond liner.  Didn't bother taking a photo of the progress but figure it will be two more weeks before the carcass will be gone.

After lunch I hooked and planned to post a photo this evening.  However, getting up from my hooking spot across the room I saw the view of a fantastic dry sink and vignette and decided that would be my post.

The wonderful black doll to the far left and the chair were made by my friend and former dollmaker Shari, the primitive black doll to the right of her was made by another friend Frannie.
Below is a pic of the right side which shows a
toy iron, tin cup and utensils which were found in the dirt outside my childhood home by my father well after I was an adult.
Those two small dolls you see were made by me.  That style sold very well when vending but am so happy to have saved these for me to enjoy and remind me of the past.  That used to be my happy past until it became work.

Now my happy place is hooking on HAPPY rugs, lol.  Well you know which rugs I'm talking about.

Back To The Cottage (edited)

Just like leaving for a vacation to get away from everything, that is how it feels to work on Cottage and Apple Tree.  The previous rug projects are behind me and hysterical news media off the TV.

I'd hoped to have the cottage its self hooked before showing it, but you know how that goes...best laid plans and all that.  Also think the original antique had a darker gold color just under the bird.  And I happen to have some but will compare and decide later.

EDIT:  Dear Robin asked me what cut I'm using so perhaps others are wondering.  I’m using mostly #8.5 with some #8 but the narrow white lines are thin strips I inherited so using those up.  At first I considered not outlining but think by doing so it dates it.
Hmmm, just looked and not only that gold but the colors in the bird are darker.  Oh well, oh hell, I just have to 'make do' as my previous designed and hooked rug suggests.....
I'm anxiously awaiting friend Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) returning from a rug camp with Sally Kallin.  It does take time to get back to normal after a rug camp but looking forward to 'reading all about it'.

Still Surrounding Myself With Beauty

Yes I'm slowly hanging more rugs on the walls to enjoy rather than having them rolled up only to be released on occasion.  I did have some rugs on the walls yet it seemed such a waste to have many rolled up and not enjoyed on a daily basis.  I mean this is my home and can decorate it any way I desire.

In the living room I added two rugs to the right side of the fireplace.  The angel and crow is a Red Saltbox design I hooked several years ago with Bev Conway, the mat below is my design of "Use it Up Wear it Out".  The dolls were made by me, by friends or vintage.
On another wall I added another two rugs.  Top left is an antique adaptation of Horse with Scrolls I offer, below that is my original design called Ox Farm, both of which I hooked at home without a teacher.  The larger one is an antique adaptation named Woodland Deer which is a Woolley Fox design and was hooked with the wonderful Barb Carroll.
Another view shows some empty space to the right of Woodland Deer.  On that particular wall I will wait to place the horse antique adaptation I'm presently working on.  But behind the TV I've no idea what I'll put there yet.
Back at the office..... I added 4 rugs to the walls.  In the mirror reflection you can see what is on the other side...a bookcase and Pat's document.
From another angle you can get a better visual of the two rugs on the left and again a view of Pat's memorabilia.  That is an antique mirror and it weighs a ton, it fell to the floor and the frame fractured but the glass itself didn't break ~ thank GOD as I'd have had many more years of bad luck.  Thankfully Tim Ayers had an antique wood restoration guy who brought the original frame back to life.
There are other changes done which I've not posted about yet because the repositions aren't completed yet.

Received my full tank of propane today and as all nut trees in this wooded development are showing bumper crops it appears it will be a long and cold winter.  But maybe I should read the Farmer's Almanac to double check.  At least when the real cold hits I'm ready.  The next two days are supposed to be rather nice, sunny and in the 70's so will take advantage of that, hopefully you will also.

Happy hooking and happy life.

Did ya Miss Me????

Have wondered if I'd be missed if I stopped blogging as so many others have done.  Before leaving for Cape May though I'd not be able to post photos on my blog from camp did a pre-saved post and planned to hit send from camp.  Turned out I couldn't remember my password and Google wouldn't send.  Thus, no posts until now.  But this is what I'd saved............

If you are reading this blog I am already at Cape May but saved this post before leaving home.  Reason is most times Blogger will NOT let me or anyone post photos on iPad.  So Google, there's more than one way to skin the cat!!!!

On Wednesday there will be a rug show open to the public at the Chalfonte Hotel and these are the rugs I'm taking to show.
Star Geometric (above), an antique adaptation drawn by me, designer unknown.
Lititz Hens, an antique adaptation drawn by me and the designer was Magdalena Briner Eby.
Above is Early Farm Scene an antique adaptation drawn by Frontier Homestead and designer unknown.
I thoroughly enjoyed every loop pulled on the Great Granddaughter's Rug above.  It was drawn by me and designed by Magdalena Briner Eby.  Below is a photo of the great granddaughter of Magdalena and the great granddaughter's son, who recently donated the prized possession.
Below is a rug drawn by me using the wording from the War Advertising Council of 1944 to conserve resources.  Always thought it was a phrase from struggling farmers and mostly used by quilters and rug hookers.  I'd be totally wrong when doing a search on the phrase.
An adorable winter piece from the design of Kelley Belfast and drawn by me is Welcome Snowman.
Also hooked in 2019 but not in the show is Cat Nap, which has already been presented to a friend.  It is also a design by Kelley Belfast and drawn by me.
OH!!!!!  Don't want to forget Patriotic Pumpkins but that piece is busy gracing my harvest table at the moment.
However,  I'd forgotten to take Horses and Hearts so it stayed home.  Guess I can take it for next year's show at Cape May.
Will do another blog post tomorrow.  I'm BAACK.

MISC. Rug Hooking Chit Chat

A few posts ago I told you of my losing a few rug labels I'd printed out.  I know they were printed and cut out but have no idea what happened to them.  And, nope, they never surfaced.  So with enough labels to fill a page I printed out more.
The three labels on the left are for rugs already hooked or in the progress.  Oh Glorious Day design will be hooked at Cape May, the bottom design Friendship Bells will be hooked November.  Because I needed another planned piece for a label I chose the small Tonya Robey pattern I've had for eons.  I figure that could easily be finished in 2019 too.

When hooking an antique adaptation I like to put the original picture on the label as with the hearts and Great Granddaughter's rug.  Otherwise  usually print a picture of the design by the maker of the pattern to show another version other than what I've hooked.

A tutorial of making rug labels can be seen on my blog by clicking HERE.  If you wanted to know my thoughts on cutters, rug frames, etc. all you need to do is type those key words in the space at the top left side of my blog.

On my grocery list today is Glad Press and Seal.  For what you ask?  I've heard that if you press that on the bottom of the rug you're working on, when pulling the rug off the frame it helps prevent loops from being pulled out.  Also, I'm such a slob at meal time there's always salad dressing which doesn't make it to my mouth but makes it to my top.  Now I'll be prepared by pressing some of that on the front of my linen top.

Happy Saturday everyone.

Glazer Antique Hearts Adaptation & Post-Op

Have been busy lately getting prepared for the dreaded dental surgery (making soup, grocery shopping so people don't see the me 'after', etc).  So not a lot of loops have been pulled on my latest project Glazer Antique Hearts.  Here is my progress so far; I've taken two photos with different settings.
If you click on the photos one will show a more up close picture.
Am trying to use as many worms as possible but some blues and caramel colors aren't quite what the original looks like.  But as my last project said:
As for post-OP, the first night was quite painful and don't think I slept at all.  Yes, was given a prescription for pain meds which I did NOT take.  I'm of the belief that pain is the body's warning system that something isn't right and has been infected.

If I'd masked the pain I wouldn't know if there was a real problem other than my body being invaded by scalpel, drills, etc.  Personally I want to know if my body is healing naturally.  If the pain does not subside naturally then something went wrong.

I'm still swollen and look as though I had a nose and lip job that was botched big time.  Am taking antibiotics for the infection, using ice packs for swelling and rinsing with warm salt water for healing.  It wasn't a cyst after all but a sample of the infection was sent to the lab so should know next week when the stitches are removed.

Jennie said she thought implants would last forever.  This was a crown and former Apico which was done about 50 years ago.  So it did last a long time.  The crown is still there so perhaps the old dental amalgam or whatever was put inside deteriorated and caused the infection.

Sadly, the Endodontist said the tooth next door will soon need attention and that I should NOT eat corn on the cob unless it is cut off the cob.  Oh CRAP, corn on the cob and garden tomatoes are one of my summer staples.  Guess not this year.

Happy Saturday folks.

Use It Up

Pulled the last loops today and now needs steaming and the binding to make it complete.   Just couldn't wait to show it to you; the finished size is 15 x 21 1/2.  The photo below is without a flash as the background color most resembles my background color in person.
And this photo is with a flash. Which means somewhere between the two pictures is what you'd see in person.  When the lighting is better I plan to post a photo on Facebook.
In a previous post when starting the rug I mentioned the origin of the phrase.  I'd always thought it was started by farmers and plains people, then adopted by quilters and rug hookers.

After doing a search learned it was the War advertising council in the year 1944.  That is when scraps of metal, clothing and anything else useful for the war effort could be used, saved, obtained, etc.

Admittedly the rug I designed was inspired by the gals who posted their photos of a "Friendship" rug on Facebook.  So thanks gals.

Happy Monday.

Do You Know.......

...the origin of the phrase which is the subject of my new rug?
It is a phrase used today mostly by quilters and rug hookers.  But I wanted to know more and this is only part of the information gleaned from my search.

"Use it up... Wear it out... Make it do... Or do without" - what a great slogan! It was coined by the War Advertising Council during World War II to promote the dual need to conserve scarce resources and to help keep prices down by not generating excess demand. Most of us have seen videos or read articles about neighborhood materials collection efforts to round up old tires, scrap metal, glass, tools, electronics equipment, cloth and clothing, and many other items that could be recycled for used directly in the war effort...."

The Use It Up design measures 16 x 23 and is close to being finished.  One mat has already been bound and the Great Granddaughter Rug is almost all bound (taking my time with that one).

And I've NO IDEA what the heck I'm going to hook next.  Have several patterns by other people but today none of them are calling my name.  Yet it makes sense to use a pattern already in my stash the drawing up something else.

Have a great evening and happy hooking, quilting or stitching ~ whatever floats your boat.

Stymied, But What's New?

Yeah, seems I've painted myself in a corner again.   Figured the challenge with the big pumpkin would be an easy fix after the rest was hooked.  All I had to do is just leave it alone or change it to an all dirty white pumpkin ~ easy peasy.

This afternoon I pulled myself away from the Use it Up rug to do the 'quick' finish hooking the tongues on Patriotic Pumpkins.  HA!  Started hooking the two tongues on the right side.  They looked way too busy for the rest of the rug.
Then thought to do a larger inside color, the blue but was distracted by the other 'busy' tongues.  Decided to pull the pattern off my frame and go back to the other rug tonight for comfort.

With so little of the design to hook I'm frustrated with myself for not finishing it tonight.  Am thinking that saying 'less is more' is definitely true in this case.  Earlier in the week friend Jennie commented to me something like..."why is it something so easy seems so difficult?"  Perhaps because I've made it hard and over thinking.

For damn sure I don't like those two tongues on the right side.  They will go.  But tonight I'm back to my Use it Up.

Hot as Hades today.  When looking at the outside temps on my thermostat, at 2 p.m. the reading was 100 degrees Fahrenheit  (37.78 Celsius) at 2 p.m. and usually it gets higher around 3 but didn't check.

Grass needs to be cut and Ben's backyard needs it the worse.  Not pushing that mower in that kind of temp so will check the temps tomorrow after breakfast.  If not then perhaps the sun and heat will just kill the grass.  Okay by me ~ no grass to cut.

Stay cool and hydrate.

Rugs With Words

Over the recent months I've admired a rug design hooked by various ladies.  Was definitely drawn to the colors and random words.  Am guessing the name of the design is "Warm Friendship".   Here are a few photos saved in my "Inspirations" file.  First one is hooked by Dawn Russell.
The one below hooked by Kathleen Marie.
Don't know who hooked the rug below and think it was the first one  saved in the "inspirations" file.  So if anyone knows who hooked it I will be happy to give credit.
While the idea of that design was intriguing and the random colors playful I didn't search for the designer or seller of the pattern.  Instead had my own ideas for a rug with words.

Thought of just posting the first line of words tonight but then you'd know what the rest of the words would be immediately so showing you the whole design.
This way I'm getting the itch scratched with words & style but doing it my way.  This phrase had captured my attention for months, maybe years.  Even shared my passion to hook this wording with sweet Kelley a while ago.  So Kelley, it's finally coming to fruition.  And thanks to you gals who hooked the Warm Friendship rugs for the inspiration to get me motivated.

Still haven't finished Patriotic Pumpkins because this was next on my 'to do' list.  Not sure what will be my focus tonight as I'm torn.

Happy hooking, stay hydrated and inside with this oppressive heat.
