Are you a NO-REPLY Blogger? 

But first, some eye candy.  This is a rug hooked by Polly Minick and is an antique adaptation.

Back to the No-Reply blogger issue.  You may think your e-mail address is listed and all is fine but during my last giveaway someone learned they really were a No-REPLY.  Here is what you can do to ensure that people can contact you via e-mail so you don't miss out on any giveaways.

So here is an easy 5 step tutorial on how to fix it so people can reply to you and you don't miss out on future giveaways...

A Little About A Lot

First, as promised, here is an update on the Magdalena Farm rug which was started with Barb Carroll on May 18th.  Wow, hard to believe that much has been accomplished in just a month and I hooked the Duluth Pumpkin too.  That might be an all time record for me even; Magdalena's Farm measures a comfortable (for me) 24 x 38, so it isn't a mat.  Well, guess it could be called a mat by some hooker's standards but not to me.

And it just registered to me that I had not taken the time to do my 'pre-binding' stitching all the way around.  So now I'm left with having to manipulate this heavy rug as I do 3 rows of stitching all the way around the 4 sides.  What was I thinking? 

Obviously I wasn't thinking at all and the pattern had been in my possession for well over a month so there's no excuse for me.  Needless to say I'm really dreading binding this one for that reason.  Having osteo-arthritis in my hands doesn't help when having to manipulate a heavy rug.  Oh well, I'll get the job done because Cape May is coming in September and it will be ready for the show then.

Frankly, I had neglected to do the pre-stitching on Duluth Pumpkin too but that is a smallish piece and that was taken care of today.  First I drew a line down the ditch just 1" away from the last row of hooking all the way around.  You can see I trimmed off the corners so there will be less bulk when I do the mitre at the corners.

Next I did one row of straight stitch ON the drawn line, a second row of straight stitching just inside that first row, and then a zig zag stitch connecting the two rows of straight stitching to secure the edge.  This way there is much less chance of the edges fraying under the binding.

Then I trimmed away the very generous excess linen that Maria Barton provided on this piece. 

Since The Cat's Meow still isn't completely bound this will join 'the land of limbo' a shameful club that I am a member of.

And another topic I'd like to discuss is my sadness that I'm unable to reply to those kind and interested hookers who have questions.  I click 'reply' to send a note only to find they are a NO-REPLY BLOGGER. 

No one thinks they are a no reply blogger since they joined BLOGGER, they have an e-mail and receive e-mails from friends and relatives constantly.  Not the same thing and you could STILL be a "No-Reply Blogger".

Recently there was a fairly new hooker who had a question about my pre-binding around The Cat's Meow rug.  I clicked the 'reply' tab but it showed she was a NO-REPLY BLOGGER.  Hopefully she will read this post and click on the link HERE which will once again explain to all how to fix the problem. 

She probably thinks that I'm stuck up, don't have the time for newbies or don't want to share.  Those who know me know that is not me at all.  I love to share and would do so in a reply if it was possible.  So, for the heck of it, click on the link above to see if you too are a no reply blogger.  You might have to scroll down a tad to see the large print information, but it is there.

Polly Minick Pattern Giveaway

Yup, you read right.... I happen to have an extra so am giving away the Patriotic Checkers Pattern.  It is a full size paper pattern that measures 22 x 22.

Time for a Giveaway

Since I'm working on a fall themed project I'm sure many of you are doing the same or will be soon.  And if you are a quilter you are in luck as I've this pattern to giveaway.  It is a pattern by Four Corners and all instructions are there including the uncut pattern sheet.

As you can see from this picture below, I've done some of the work for you and the pieces are even ironed onto light weight fusible web so they are ready to be ironed onto your fabric of choice.

I made the one larger single quilt piece but didn't complete the one with four scarecrow designs.  This picture below is very washed out as the picture was taken in the sunlight a few years ago.  I can't take a new picture since I've given the quilt piece away.  But the colors really were nicer and not dull brown as it appears in this photo.

A name will be chosen on Monday morning.  So here are my rules:

Just a Couple Pieces of Candy...Eye Candy that is

Since I've been quite busy the last couple days with appointments, an order for 3 patterns which need drawing today, not much has been accomplished on Magdalena's rug.

First up is a Frost Lion on burlap which measures 30 x 60.  Have no date as to when it was hooked.

Late 19th/early 20th century is this rug depicting two doves drinking from a fountain.  It measures 33 x 48.

Blocks of color with numbers 3 and 2 hooked inside two of the blocks.

And you've recently seen this Duck and Ducklings before and is one of the antique adaptations I'm drawing today for a customer.  This one will measure 22 x 35. 

In a previous post dedicated to Molly Nye Tobey,  I showed a few of her rugs, including this one of Apple Pie.  

Unfortunately I misspelled her last name on that post but the post is so old that editing isn't possible.  I received a nice comment from Molly Nye Tobey's grandson, Tom Tobey yesterday.  However, Tom, since you are a NO-REPLY BLOGGER I am unable to reply to you as there is no address in which to send.  Would love to see the rug your grandmother hooked of your drawing as a child.

Spring Daffodil and Sheep Challenge

Yes, it is finally done.....well, a few more stitches to tack down the cotton binding on the back is all.

Oh, Elaine, I wanted to respond to you personally but since you are a NO-REPLY blogger the emails don't get to you.  But yes, I have done all types of binding rugs, wool yarn whipping, wool strip whipping, the Betsy Reed primitive edge binding, wool covered cording edge with wool back, you name it and I've done it.  If you use the search engine at the top left corner you can type in the words to see  how I did those techniques.  And, if you want to find out how to FIX the NO-REPLY Blogger problem click HERE.  Thanks to "Anyone Can Decorate" for putting together such an easy visual to fix it.

Here's my Little Lambie Pie.  She is wearing a wool collar with a bell so I can tell where she is.

I hooked this using mostly #8.5 and #9 wool strips but did try to use worms whenever and where ever I could in various sizes.  The daffodil trumpets strips ranged from #8 to 3/4 - 1".

The sheep was hooked in a hand cut from a piece of delightful wool which was purchased from Gail Dufresne a few years ago.  Even tho it would go thru the cutter I hand cut ensure the lumps would not be cut in the middle but in the ditch of the weave. 

Am in the process of putting my grandson's design on linen but not going to rush to start hooking it tonight since there's a bit more hand stitching of the inside of the binding tape.  Plus I'd like to steam that section again to make it smooth in the back.

MY BLOG PSA

Windy Day pattern hooked by me and sold by WCushing 

Over the last year or so several people have asked why they are no longer receiving my posts automatically.  Or most recently ask me to add them to my 'newsletter subscription'.  Wish I could help, however that is a feature Google/Blogger no longer provides.  Believe me it is as frustrating for me as it is you.  And this doesn't affect just my blog, it affects many other bloggers as well and they aren't happy either.

Most times I work from my PC vs. iPad as I like the keyboard better using all my typing skills rather than thumbs.  So maybe this might help make finding me easier.  

My blog name is "Saundra of Woodland Junction".  So go to your search engine and type in my first name, links should be provided for my blog, website, etc.  Eventually you might only need to type in the first 3 letters of my name and those links would pop up.    I just did it on my PC and took a screen shot.

Notice 'sau' were the only letters I typed and the blog link popped up with other options.  By chance if you don't remember my name or how to spell it, am sure it would work the same way if you typed in "woodland junction".

Also, someone once told me if you are a 'follower' the posts will show up that follower's feed.  Still don't understand just what or where that feed is.

Over the years I've told several of my readers they were a "NO-REPLY" blogger.  Or perhaps you thought I was being anti-social since you didn't receive a response.  Trust me, we bloggers love communicating and replying to our readers and those who are kind enough to comment or ask questions.

We aren't being anti-social, we just can't reply to your comment.  You can google 'how to fix no-reply blogger' but I'm making that task easy for you and you can read how to fix that problem HERE.

The next blog post am planning to show what little I've accomplished on the big rug project, lol.  Usually I'd have a plus one going on but frankly all energy needs to be focused on this big horse.   Happy hooking and I'm on my way back to doing just that.

Comments and Replies

Wow, I'm humbled by the kind and warm comments given me for Saturday's blog post as well as previous comments.  All that appreciation has given me the impetus to continue blogging.  Guess I was just in a slump as I couldn't come up with a new and interesting topic or learning experience.

After reading all the comments I'd come to realize just why I started blogging in the first place.  It is more personal and feel as tho a 'gathering of like minds' is taking place and try to make everyone feel welcome.  In all honesty, I feel as tho the people met thru blogs are my friends and feel close to them, often communicating and sharing jokes and personal information. 

Comments are welcomed and always appreciated.  I do try to reply to every one's comments as I feel since YOU took the time to comment YOU deserve a reply.  However, some people are a "No-Reply" blogger so my email would not get to you.  You may not even know you are one.

Most recently I wanted to reply to Honey, Carolyn, and Elaine but each of you are "no reply' bloggers.  I know that for sure and there is a way to remedy that.  Some of you many not even know you are a NO REPLY blogger.  Here is how you can find out if you are and HOW TO FIX it.  It really is easy. How Do You Hook Antique Adaptations

Thank goodness I've finally finished the whole kitten and a row or so of background around.  And yes, the original antique has a lighter line down the middle but mine shows up more prominently than in the photo further down.

Below is the original from which mine is being adapted.  That line shows up very faintly there and was printed off my computer; yet the line is more prominent in the photo in person.  You know me.... I'm not bothered by pulling out loops and replacing them but do try to hold off for a while to see if it grows on me.  I've pulled loops too early and then regretted so now try to hold off a little.

OH, just a thought ~ for those of you who love hooking antique rug adaptations, do you try to hook them in the colors which may have been the original clean colors before fading and wear?  If you get to see the rug in person you get to see the original colors on the underside.  Or, do you hook them in colors similar to the olden dirty and faded look? 

There is not a good or bad way, right or wrong answer, just a matter of taste.  For me it was the look of the well loved and well used rug of yesteryear that attracted me.  Perhaps I'm an old soul ~ har har, hell yeah I'm old now, ....again.

Rug Hooking Detour (Edited Edition)

...edited edition will begin with the iPad Pencil further down.

Am taking a brief break away from Glazer Antique Hearts and make changes to a rug I hooked last year at Rugs by the Sea in Cape May.  Seems like that rug camp has taken complete control over my mind lately.  

That rug getting my attention again is a pattern named Golden in the Garden which you can read about by clicking on that link.  This is how it looked after finishing it October 2018.  I wasn't completely pleased with how my boy Ben turned out (I changed it from a Golden Retriever to a Rottweiler).  He was supposed to be a wide cut primitive but wasn't pleased with the head.  But before that challenge decided to work on the snail and make it a little more prominent.  Below is the before.

Above was the snail before and below is how the snail looks now.  Hmm the new photo looks a little washed out.  Next to tackle my boy Ben.

Rather than just ripping out any wool on Ben thought I'd use my Apple Pencil for the first time since purchasing the new iPad last year.  Am hoping this exercise will give me better direction on how to proceed.  Remember, I'm a novice at this and is my first try.

Unfortunately there isn't an exact color choice for the background.  Since Ben's head is too big for the body it is the dark wool which needs to be removed and replaced with background wool.  Thankfully I've more of that wool.  Will also have to tweak what black wool is there.

Here is the edited version.....  Here is my first experience with the Apple Pencil to see how to make changes to my boy Ben.  At first thought using the black line might help me decide what colors to pull to make the head/muzzle better.  BTW, this was before changing the snail.  This first try I felt his muzzle would be too short, too boxy and didn't represent my boy.

Second attempt at using a black line drawing on the photo thought I'd shave off a little under the muzzle.  But with the black lines on black hooking couldn't see what the results would be.

That is when I decided to use a close color to the background, alleviate the black on black to see what the face would look like with those sections removed.  

Guess if you don't have or know about the Apple iPad pencil then you don't can't grasp what I've tried to demonstrate.  There is no lead or ink in the pencil, it is a program in the newer iPads and the pencil is purchased separately.

Dear Zekes Mom and rx2Massey, thank you for your comments but because you are a NO-REPLY Blogger I was unable to respond to you personally.  There is an easy way for you to fix this, all you have to do is a search for "fix no-reply blogger".

Today I still didn't get to work on Ben and tomorrow the stitches are removed from my gum.  Sure hope I'm healed enough for those to be removed just 6 days after surgery.

Natural Wool ~ For Sale and A Recipe

First I'll speak about the recipe called Soft Green which is in one of my favorite dye books Beautiful Wool by Laurice Heath.  The Soft Green recipe uses Cushing Dyes; 1 1/2 t. Bronze Green, 1/2 t. Khaki Drab in one cup boiling water.  Then from that 1 cup you apply the dye one tablespoon at a time in your pot over natural wool until you achieve the intensity you want.  

Remember that well water vs. city water, as well as physical location does have an affect on how the final wool turns out. So be sure to add only 1 tablespoon of dye at a time, you can always add more.

The background wool used in both Hester and now Hobo Joe is this green below which was overdyed on natural wool.  The ticket I attached to the wool indicates the recipe used was Soft Wool, 4 T from Beautiful Wool.

When I dye wool I'd usually do a couple different dye pots and put 4 T of the solution in a pot and the other maybe 3 T of dye.  Normally I start with one tablespoon and add to see what I like.  You can always add more if it isn't dark enough.  Here is the background on Hobo Joe, close to the end.  

Here's Hester, a design by Lori Brechlin and was a free pattern in the last issue of Primitive Quilts and Projects.  Looks like I used up the lighter pieces of wool from the same dye for this mat.  The outside border and base was from an as is textured piece of wool.

Now about that natural wool sale.  Below is a picture of one yard of UN-washed natural 100% wool.  If you click on the picture it will enlarge and you can read the tag.

I am not over dying much natural wool these days since there are so many colors left in my stash to use up so really need to clean some of this wool out.  The natural is $15 per yard and I've several yards.  

As you can see there is more on the bolt.  At this time I'm not ready to sell my as is textured wool but that might be next because when I walk in that wool room I become over whelmed.

RUNNING HORSE UPDATE

Just a little progress has been made on my current project.  But at least there's been some progress.  Seems we rug rug hookers are never satisfied with how much we've accomplished and don't think I'm alone in that respect.  Once the rug is done we are usually always pleased tho, right?

Not much else to share other than more rain tomorrow and Wednesday, my grass needs cutting but not sure it will get done tomorrow, depends on how wet it is outside.

My deck still needs to be washed and sealed but the pollen of different shapes continues to drop.  That light dusty yellow/green pollen has stopped but the worm-shaped and other pollen is showing its face now.

The part of the deck above was swept this morning but had to run errands and this lower part didn't get swept off.  That's why it has more pollen and leaf droppings.

OH!!!!!  Nancy Armstrong, I did receive your comment but you are a NO-REPLY blogger so was unable to respond to you.  That issue can be fixed, just goggle how to fix No-Reply blogger.  OR, if you look on the right side of my blog there is a spot to EMAIL ME.  That ensures a way for me to contact you.

Throw Back Thursday (EDITED)

Since I've run into a little glitch while hooking Early Bird I'll do a flash back to Cape May 2014.  Don't worry, I promise to show you the glitch and what I do to fix my problem in my next post.

Stepping back in time to September 2014, Ali Strebel was my teacher that year.   The first task  in the class was doing a sampler of stitches.  Ali handed out pieces of linen to each of us and a few strips of wool in various colors.  I still have my sampler but since it isn't as organized or pretty as my pal Deb's I stole a picture of hers to show, albeit upside down.

Here is Ali demonstrating something but can't tell or remember just what it was.

Notice the gal above in navy blue (Elaine Copeman), she is the one who hooked Bertha at the Beach piece below.  This is a hoot and she did a magnificent job.

Some Ohio gals were there, but sadly not Lauren, and they seemed to love picking on me.  Hey, I'm easy to pick on, what can I say.

You can spot a Cheri Reid hooked rug a mile away.  Here are only three which were in the rug show.  The Red Lion Inn was huge so took two photos so you could enjoy the entirety of it.  The first photo shows the top which was heavily reinforced for it to hang properly .

Last but not least is a photo of some gals enjoying the fine weather hooking on the porch.  Am hoping Cape May will be happening again this September.

I didn't show all the rugs from the show as I've other things to do this afternoon.  Have wasted so much time trying to recover the photos, searching the archives on previous blog posts to find Janet's rug to no avail.  And including trying several times to edit the color changes in this post.  Frustration!!!!!

Again, if anyone has a photo of Janet's Give Ye Thanks rug please send me a copy.  Since Janet is no longer with us I'd like to have that as a fond memory of her struggle.  I believe that rug was her Giving Thanks for being in remission.
