Antique Rug Show

The most favorite postings of mine and which receives the most visits are ones with antique rugs.  First up is a rug with black chickens and diamond border.  Dimensions are 30 x 47, hooked 1900 and still offered for sale at the moment.

This floral is lovely but too much boring background for me.  No date or size was provided.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner so here are folky hearts measuring 19 x 34 from Manheim, PA (no  date).

Here is a view of the back which shows relatively little fading on the front. 

A rug with tulip border and a blank canvas in the center which could say WELCOME, or last name of the people who live there, etc.  It measures 24 x 36 and hooked early 20th century.

This quirky bird made me chuckle when I found it.  The bird known as a roadrunner was hooked with yarn and measures 11.5 square.  Said to be hooked between 1920-30, you can learn more about the Roadrunner HERE.  Am guessing those plants are cacti; I like this guy!

I have probably shown this Barbara Merry rug before but it is now offered for sale again.  Was hooked early 20th century and measures 27.5 x 46.5.

This is a close up of the roof and it is amazing that each of us probably have all of these wools in our possession and what a perfect roof.

Ahhh, now to horses....This rug doesn't quite meet the 'in public domain' date requirement since it was said to be hooked 1935.  But I love it and had to share.  It measures 25 x 45 and has butterflies, birds, rabbit, etc.

Hmm, guess we need a cat rug for our feline lovers...let me see what I can find. Here is an exquisite looking cat with flowers and rather large at 57 x 76.  It sold for $1,650 (date of sale unknown) but was hooked between 1900-1925.  Whoever hooked this gave this cat a lavish lifestyle for sure and the cat knew it was special.  Well, at least that's what I'm interpreting from the hooked rug.

Okay kids, gonna go back to the Woman on Horseback for another dose, lol.  Then will probably be looking forward to the 'forever floral'.  I truly do like having another small on the side to work on as a change.  But whatever floats your boat you just keep on going on.  Happy hooking.

WOMAN ON HORSEBACK

Didn't accomplish nearly as much on this as I'd hoped and won't accomplish more on it tonight or tomorrow; will explain further down.  Since Kimm (Sheep Underfeet) drew her pattern out before me she has probably gone gangbusters on hers.  I'll let her post accomplishments on her blog first and then will borrow steal her photo and post it on mine as well.  But Kimm gets first dibs on her progress.

As previously mentioned I drew mine out 18 x 18.5.  I used narrow cut worms for the face and #8 plus #8.5 for the blouse, cat and tree.  Decided to keep those color filled baggies of worms right where they were because they've been handy using for this piece.

This evening I want to start binding of Double Eagle rug since my DIL has an endoscopy tomorrow and will want something to keep me occupied.  It's a win win because I hate waiting and hate binding.  

As all my readers/followers know, I draw rug patterns and will draw whatever size you choose on which ever block floats your boat.

The Forever Floral Preview

While you folks ponder which block you'd like to hook thought I'd take a photo of the forever floral to show you.  I wanted to see if the colors are okay before completing that pink and red flower or if it is too pink.  Did I mention I'm not fond of pink; yet here I am with pink in the rug.  I still have some pink/tan mottled wool I could use, which is in the flower to the right of the unfinished flower. 

Also wonder if the addition of earthy colored flowers upsets the flower cart, so to speak.  But no way I could handle just a pink and blue rug.

And if the montage of colors is okay then what the heck do I do with the remaining flowers??  I'll hook the penny flowers the same as the others but it's the other two big ones I'm worried about.  Where is my rug teacher when I need one, LOL.

Hmmm, with that in mind I don't think dearly departed Barb would have those pinkie and bluey flowers at all, but not sure what she would choose.

My Woman on Horseback pattern has been drawn and on my frame.  So far I've only hooked her hat, hair and am on her face with a narrow cut.  Yup, that's all I've accomplished. I recall in a class at camp my teacher told us to "hook what's on top first".  So that's what I did.  As soon as the hat, face and hair are done I'll hook around that with something to contain the shape.  Will do that in blue until I decide if the background will be anything other than sky color.  Nope, sorry, not enough hooked to show you.

Lucinda Ward's Reconciliation Quilt Hook-Along Post #2

During my homework pre hook-along for this subject I searched lots of on-line places hoping to find some hooked representation of the historic quilt.  Of course there is the pattern which is offered by Woolley Fox titled Lucinda's Quilt.  This one below was hooked by Joyce Rickenbach

Also discovered this creative adaptation which has an added image from someone's creative mind.  Have no idea who hooked it so if anyone reading my blog knows please let me know and I'll give credit.

Today I also luckily found better section photos of the quilt which might make copying easier.

My pattern has been enlarged...uh, twice, lol.  The first one was enlarged 225% which gave me a 16 x 16.5.  After looking at it overnight decided to enlarge it 250% which gives me an 18 x 18.5 pattern. 

Here is part of the rats nest I spoke of which unfortunately didn't get cleaned up today but I did get the pattern drawn on linen.  So tonight  I'll pull a few more loops and show you where I am on the 'forever floral' tomorrow.  BTW, you couldn't see the pile of loose worms on the sofa arm to the left nor the worms on the tv tray to the left but here is rather a contained rats nest.

LUCINDA WARD'S RECONCILITIAN QUILT BLOCK HOOK-ALONG

As much complaining as I've done lately wishing I had something new on my frame it was right in front of my face the whole time.  But totally forgot until Kimm (Sheep under Feet)  emailed today and say she "had a hankering for something different..." so she drew out her choice of block design and hers measures 13.5 x 14.

I haven't drawn mine out yet but after she emailed back saying she's enjoying it and hooking in #6 decided I will make mine bigger since I don't enjoy narrow cuts.  Not sure what size mine will be yet because this post needed to be done asap to give readers the opportunity to decide which block they'd like to hook.   

Take a look at this quilt and see if there is anything you'd enjoy working on in whatever size pattern you desire.  Then either you can copy and crop a photo to draw on linen or I can copy and crop a photo to send you to trace out and put on linen.

Initially there were a couple blocks which intrigued me ~ one was the lady carrying baskets and of course the other was the woman on a horse.  Kimm's choice was also the woman on the horse.  

Here are a couple blocks already copied and pasted here for you to think about.  Sorry some photos are a tad blurry but it will work if you print it out and trace it like we did as kids (against a sunny window).  Then enlarge the design and draw on your favorite backing.

NOTE: since this is an antique and in PUBLIC DOMAIN it is okay to copy.  You MAY NOT copy someone else's personal creation.  IF you copy this and even if you make a few changes, credit should be given to Lucinda Ward as an adaptation of her work.

The reason some blocks appear more clear is because I found those on another of my searches for Lucinda Ward's quilt.  The blurry ones are what I cropped and saved.

So think about joining in the fun.  Tonight I'll continue to pull a few loops on the 'forever floral' and in the morning will tidy up that rat's nest around me and draw out my pattern.  So stay tuned.

ANTIQUE RUG SHOW and ANOTHER PATTERN

This rug pattern isn't going on my frame it is a pattern for a customer.  The name of it is Apple Tree Farm of Cogswell's Grant and you can read about the historic rug and location HERE.

A floral dated between 1820-1840 measures 28.5 x  5 8.5.

I found this Farm Animals rug sweet.  Dimensions are 32 x 49 and hooked 20th century.  The starting bid for it is $50, in case you're wondering, no I won't be bidding, lol.  

Here's one Cathy might interested in bidding on with a low starting bid of $50 also.  Man in the Mountain, NH, size is 24 x 36 and hooked early 20th century.

This primitive landscape is adorable ~ it looks like a squirrel and owl in a tree, the horse is a very primitive childlike image and a dog running to catch a ride in the sleigh.  Wish I had more information,  don't even know size I  just happen to see a photo on Pinterest.

Valentine's Day is coming soon so showing Hearts and Diamonds with hit and miss border is apropos.  Sadly that's all I have on this too, no size, dates, etc.

For you feline fans...Cat with hearts, butterflies, fans and dated Jan1888.  Dimensions are 24.5 x 43.5.

I've had lunch, shipped the rug pattern and now going to work on the 'forever floral'.  Perhaps you'll see an update (not a finish, lol) soon.  Normal January temperatures have returned albeit with some drizzle.

January and Magdalena's Goat

The start of early January has been unusually mild, particularly enjoyable since it had been way below normal recently.  The last couple days I've worked in the yard blowing and raking leaves in preparation for the upcoming next rain.

Also drew a Magdalena Goat pattern (29 x 35) for yet another person; this gal is attending a workshop January 11th.  Now I'm wondering if the gal I drew the large one for in December is attending the same workshop.  

Here is Magdalena's original antique which measures 29 x 36.  I'm proud to say I found it while surfing my on-line auction houses and sent Evelyn Lawrence the link for her to confirm it was indeed a Magdalena rug.  

Magdalena's remaining family had confided to Evelyn when they were kids they remembered Goat rugs but none had been found at the time Evelyn was doing research for her book, shown below.  Which makes me wonder if there are more undiscovered Magdalena rugs out there.

The starting bid for the Goat rug was $100 and I watched it increase to the final selling price of $10,000.00.  So someone else knew it's value and the price skyrocketed.

Haven't made much headway on the 'forever floral' so no need to take a photo quite yet, nor have I chosen what to draw as my next project.   At this moment I'm thinking along the lines of a log cabin with a red fox in it somewhere.  

Since I feel like you're getting cheated with just one rug photo thought I'd show  you a couple log cabin rugs I've hooked but still think I'd like to hook another.  Would want the new one to be larger, hooked in #9 cut and  be a rug which is placed in front of my fireplace ~ which I switch out every couple months.

This first one was hooked in 2012 and is a design by Barb Carroll free to hook in one of her books.  I drew leaves instead of flags, redirected the smoke to make the design less tall.    It is hanging in my bedroom.

Rainbow Cabin is another Barb pattern which I purchased from her and was hooked 2016.

This last one was hooked 2014 and is an adaptation of a block from one of Harriet Powers Bible Quilts.  I gifted it to Evelyn Lawrence that year.

NEW OLD RUGS SHOW

One of my daily routines is searching for antique rugs via on-line auction houses and I recently found quite a number of them.   Given a date of 1840 is this chenille shirred dog rug which measures 32 x 47.

Fancy Flowers hooked 19th century measures 34 x 51.  I like that border design too.

This Folky landscape is quite busy and hard to settle the eyes on a definitive motif.  Said to be circa 1900 and measures 36 x 78.  Something about this rug seemed all too familiar so went scrolling thru another flash drive which was full.  Look down below.

So I'm wondering if that was a pattern offered by the Peddlers years ago with colors and design leaning toward the textiles they had on hand.  Interesting eh?  This one below was said to be hooked late 19th or early 20th century and measures 24 x 45.  Perhaps the former rug was used as the model for this newer cleaner version.

Same web site same day I found Big Yellow Cat measuring 21 x 42 and said to be hooked early 20th century.  Again this looked familiar and wondered if it was a rug being re-sold.

Nope, wasn't being re-sold.  This one below measures 23 x 42.  Interesting to see how different people hook the same designs even many years ago.

These next rugs are antique rugs once owned by dearly departed Barb Carroll and will be sold January 19th.   I know this first one as Kinderhook Flower Basket and I hooked an adaptation of it in class with Barb.  The rug measures 27 x 38 and said to be hooked early 20th century.

Another rug up for sale is what friends of Barb's know as Ligonier Duo.  It measures 27 x 39 and was hooked late 19th century.

NEW YEAR'S EVE

That is not only the name of this rug pattern designed by Lindsay Bowles and sold by The Wool Farm but also my happy New Year wishes to all my followers for 2023.

There was a time when I was a party girl and would have my outfit waiting for me on the bed to go out dancing and welcoming in the new year to the music of Auld lang syne.  But for the past several years I've welcomed the new year in behind closed eyes.

Thanks to all for your friendship over the years; lets hope 2023 will be better than the last couple years.

Re-Designing as I Hook

Although I really wanted to keep hooking thought I'd better take a look to see how these flower color combinations are working together from the monitor.  Not all the reds are the same, some are an orangey red, some soft red, others are wine red; then throw in the pinks and blues and now worried they don't play well together.  There are also various shades and values of green but that doesn't bother me as much.

So I'm wondering if I've added too many different flower colors ~ for sure don't want all red and pink.  I like salmon colors yet there's no salmon color in there.   Do I dare, lol?  Or should I just continue with this color palate?  Me thinks keep on going on.

Here's this wannabe antique-looking floral, so you can give me your thoughts.  I do plan to hook that other smaller pointy flower same as I did the big blue one so the eye will move around the rug.  Might even eliminate that flower to the left of the small pointy one or at least make it smaller.  As the title says.."re-designing as I hook".

Before going to bed tonight I'll put the black eye peas in soak which will be cooked for dinner tomorrow evening and New Year's Day.
