Another Rug Show n Tell

Here are more rugs recently found on auction sites.  To my knowledge none of them were owned by dear Barb.  I've had this rug photo for a year or so but didn't show it since I wasn't sure it was an antique and had no  info.  Just this week I saw it listed and got the info needed.

The Dog rug measures 37 x 38.5 and hooked late 19th or early 20th century.  Provenance from important DC private collection but no name provided.

Farm/landscape with covered wagon measures 23 x 42 but no date was provided.

The central design below looks like 4 leaves to me.   Hooked late 19th early 20th century and dimensions are 32.5 x 38.

A Patriotic Landscape from the collection of Barbara and Charlie Hunter.  Was hooked early 20th century and measures 36.5 x 53.

An Oval floral hooked early 20th century.  Colors are very pleasing to the eye with dimensions of 36 x 52.

Another rug from the collection of Barbara and Charlie Hunter is Hunters in Canoe (23 x 37) and hooked mid 20th century.

Recently Jane Sittnick (follower of my blog) took a trip to New Brunswick, Canada to visit the Village Historique Acadian.  She was kind enough to share the following rugs with me.  The Hit and miss diamonds rug happens to be folded across the bottom rail of an antique bed.

Another antique rug she shared is the Squares and Diamonds rug which is a nice geometric.

She also sent me these two 5 star rug pictures which were probably critically placed so as to not be stepped on..

Soft Yellow floral and geometric too.

Yet another Hit and Miss with wide border. This must be in a cubby hole area where part of the border is hidden behind the chest.

On her tour they also had a couple samples of works in progress which could be used to demonstrate the art of rug hooking.  I'm sure Jane didn't need any demonstration as she knowledgeable.  You can see the fabric scraps placed on top of a beautiful design.

VETERAN'S DAY & MORE

Thanks to all the Veterans who have served to protect our Republic and Constitution.  

Since it has been raining all day I didn't feel guilty pulling a few loops on the Double Eagle rug.   Plan is to work on the inside and tackle the border last.  Don't think I've ever done that before as I usually work the major motif in the center first then start at the top left side and work myself around.  Will see how long this plan continues.

Tomorrow's weather will be another day with 10* above normal temps and then will change to 10* below normal by Monday.  Weatherman said this is the last of the mild temps and winter on its way.

Antique Rug Show (edit near bottom)

Part of my daily routine is looking on the internet for newly listed antique rugs and this week I found several.  This time some of the findings were bitter sweet since many were from the estate of dearly departed Barb Carroll.  One such beautiful antique rug is this Frost Horse rug circa 1900 which measures 30 x 48.

Cora and Bentley was the name Barb gave this rug because of the initials at the bottom.  It was hooked late 19th century and measures 28 x 40.

I remember admiring this Welcome mat which was hanging over a bed at her home.  It was hooked early 20th century, measuring 19 x74.

Attending rug camp at Barbs was always fun and she enjoyed showing us her new antique rug purchases.  This Duck Rug hung in a spare room upstairs at her large Woolley Fox location.  It was hooked 1900 and  measures 25 x 50.

This is probably a Frost design too.  Said to be hooked early 20th century it measures 17.5 x 36.5.

A few times I've thought of hooking the following antique rug of Barb's with 2 men riding horses.  It was hooked 20th century and measures 18 x 34.  I can't help but smile each time I see the large men sitting on the rump of the horses.

Barb named the antique below "Birthday Bunny" because she got it on her birthday.  It measures 20 x 38.

The dog was hooked early 20th century and measures 17.5 x 36.5 and was hanging on the wall at the stairwell near Birthday Bunny.

This wonderful geometric hung on the wall in Barb's dining room where we enjoyed it during lunch.  It would also be a wonderful adaptation to use up worms.  Perhaps a way I could  use up some selvage edges I've saved.

More than likely there will be other antique rugs of Barb's listed at the auction houses so I'll be super vigilant in my pursuit of them as days go by.  FYI, none of the rugs posted here were hooked by Barb; all of these were antique rugs she purchased.

(Edit) ~ I thought the rubber ducky mats would make more sense if the story started at the beginning...during 2012 Barb was going thru a troubling time so a bunch of us got together and purchased cases of rubber ducks for her koi pond.  They might make her smile and be a reminder she had emotional support from her friends. 

That year Deb and I hooked a 'rubber ducky' mat to present her when we went to camp.  When she moved from the large WF property I was quite surprised and honored that Barb thought enough of the gifts to take them to her new townhouse.  Since these aren't the caliper to be auctioned off I wonder what their fate will be.  Deb's is on top and mine at the bottom.

MISC. RUG HOOKING CHIT CHAT

In case you've been sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what is on my frame, here is the preview.  Yeah, I know, wasn't even on my radar when showing the line-up of auditioning's for that position.  At the last minute this appealed to me most.

Since I've been taking advantage of the balmy weather here (up to 81* a couple days) that means fewer loops were pulled.  I drew this adaptation 26.5 x 29.

Rug binding ~  Two down and one to go.  Two of the three mats/rugs needing binding have been accomplished and left now is Mary Mary quite contrary.  

Li'l Lamb front.  That shiny speck at the top curve is the rayon jacket lining; one side was black the reverse side was a shiny gold.  Will pull my cheating trick and use a black Sharpie to cover up the shine.

Below is the back and you can see how nicely the cotton binding had been gathered with only slight puckers.

I misspoke yesterday saying it was the last day of the weather honeymoon.  But today will be another reaching 80* then tomorrow will be closer to normal with a high of 60.  Also, tomorrow is ELECTION DAY, so please go to the polls, VOTE and make your voice heard.  GOD BLESS AMERICA and our CONSTITUTION!!!!!!!

Old Rugs Live On

The old rugs live on thru us with our replication of the designs.  Wonder what Magdalena would think, or does she know, how her designs have influenced modern day rug hookers?  Old rugs evoke emotions in us, or at least that is true of me.  Could be the design (I do gravitate toward horse and deer rugs) and could be the colors.  

So I'm thinking there are attachments to old rugs which also live on thru the antique rug itself.  A Horse rug measuring 37 x 37 was hooked 1880.  Look at the orb on the inside brown border.

If you have followed me for a while then you know of my posting photos with orbs taken at Cape May and even here at home.  Orbs at Cape May I've thought are part of the hotel and for whatever reason their spirit remains there.  

Then I wonder if the orb at home is a family member watching over me or my guardian angel.  Even blogged a true story about my repair of a thrift shop piece I purchased where there was a scent attached.  To you who have read it my apologies for being redundant but there are new followers and new rug hookers who may not have seen that post.  To read about it click this link:  https://woodlandjunction.blogspot.com/search?q=scent+of+potpourri

So perhaps there are spirits who attach themselves to rugs.  Okay, back to antique rugs ....

A delicate floral hooked piece dated 1830 sold for $2,500 in 2012.  Dimensions are 31 x 48.

An Elephant and Castle with tongues was said to be hooked 1850-1880.  It measures 29 x 43.  I read somewhere that years ago elephants were a favorite animal to hook.  Don't think it had anything to do with politics back then tho.

Squirrels and tulips circular rug hooked in the 1900's is 39" in diameter.

You may think I've gone crazy, but something about this next one appeals to me.  Have no idea as to date hooked or dimensions.

The  next one is definitely not one of my favorites by any stretch of the imagination.  But since I found it and an oldie hooked between 1885-1915 here is Bat and Cat measuring 23.5 x 70.   Could be the hooker had a favorite cat who was a good bat catcher.

And finally, a cat with trapped mouse dated 19th century measuring 12 x 15.  Well there ya go with some unusual pests, cute cats and large animals.

Another mild day and was able to abolish some periwinkle in one area  and do laundry which I hung on the line to dry a little and reduce time in the dryer.

One Done Two To Go

The wonderful Deer and Blue house is finally bound and gracing my harvest table.  It was fun to hook, love the colors and blotchy background.

Now I'm binding Li'l Lamb and want to show you newbie hookers something you may not know.  Heck I didn't know it until I had been hooking over a decade.  The lamb piece has a curved top.  Since I don't want to whip the edges to add more color and width to the pieace I've decided to use cotton rug binding.

Did you know there is one edge of cotton binding which can be gathered?  Yup!  That would be the more rigid edge.  It may take a little patience to find the proper thread as this did for me and I tried both ends to see which worked best.  You can see that thread to the far right.  

The mat isn't quite bound but thought I'd show you what it looks like during the process.  The inside gather can be manipulated as you work and while you do see gathers it isn't the big puckers you would have if you didn't gather.  Then once the final steaming is done it smooths out nicely.

I did start a new project and ~ no surprise here ~ have reverse hooked even before the first photo.  But hope to have something promising to show in a day or so.

Weather here has been a few degrees above normal so I've tried to take advantage of it as much as my back, hip and knees allow.   There are unruly patches of periwinkle (vinca minor) which are taking over the yard.  When we first built here I didn't think it would even catch as a 'pretty' ground cover.  But OMG do I regret planting it!!!  Made some headway today around the back deck and before the mild temps leave will need to take inventory of the rest of the yard to see what is most important next.

STARTING FRESH

My hooking area is cleaned up with wool worms separated (again) and put into their proper color bags, so I'm starting fresh.  Bet it will look like a rats nest once again after just a couple hours of hooking.

Last loops were pulled on Li'l Lamb so there are officially 3 pieces to be bound.  Tomorrow I've a doctor appointment so will take Deer and Blue House with me to work on while I wait.  After that plans are to work on binding at least one hour per day; no way I want 4 rugs piled up needing binding.  

For those who have been waiting....here's the Li'l Lambkin.

Hmm, those tiny fibers you see are from the cheese cloth I used.  In the Li'l Lamb I used cotton knit, vintage seam binding, nylon stocking, rayon jacket lining, cheese cloth, and yarn.  Fun, fun, fun.

Those of you who have joined this present challenge I will happily share your pictures on my blog when you send them to me.

Must say I did enjoy this textile challenge  more than the last because all the fabric used was much easier to pull than the woven cotton and homespun I used for the Tattered Tulip last challenge (below).  

Now I'm ready to go back to regular wool hooking since I've probably hundreds of yards here and much more than I can hook in my lifetime.  So  just why did I buy two more yards from The Wool Studio?   Guess you could call  it an addiction.

VINTAGE RUG REVIEW

I love doing these posts and sharing photos of old rugs I find listed by auction houses and elsewhere on the internet.  First up is Basket of Flowers which is a yarn sewn rug measuring 28.5 x 63 and sold for $18,000 despite its damage.

Next is a 6 point star with diamond shapes and triangles dated 1895 on the end.

A  landscape with a rooster as the main focus.  It is dated 1920, measures 40 x 42, and from the collection of Luis Arroyo.

Dated 1930 is the geometric sampler below and smallish at 13 x 19.  If I did one of those I'd have to make mine bigger than that as I'm not fond of narrow cuts.

Unfortunately I cannot validate the date of patriotic chickens below as no date was provided.  Don't know it really is antique but it does have a delightful background which lends itself to a rug of age.

Cats and Tulips circa 1900 dimensions are approx. 22 x 36 guessing by the ruler at the bottom center.

Am so close to pulling the last loop on Li'l Lamb that I'll end up with 3 rugs to bind.  Yesterday afternoon I worked on binding the Deer and Blue house while watching The Five.  Don't think I've ever had that many rugs needing to be bound at the same time.  Normally I save that undesirable task for the doctor's waiting room.  But there's only one more doctor appointment this year which means it needs to be done at home and SOON because a new rug is calling my name.

Another Challenge Update

Yes there is another finish on the textile challenge and submitted by Jane Sittnick.  To be totally honest she did say she started it just after the last former challenge, which she also participated in.  She chose the Black Kitten and did a fabulous job, here is her work.

I'm not quite done with my sheep and will hold off showing the update until it is all hooked but not yet bound.   A couple other people have indicated they are joining this endeavor, and when you do I'll definitely post your photos on my blog.

Personal Challenge Updates.

Angie from Ohio joined the challenge and she picked the  ‘Lone Flower’.  She used cottons, T-shirt’s, nylons, velvet scraps and wool.  Said she really enjoyed hooking it so much that she forgot to take pictures at various stages of completion.  She also said she loves mixing textiles due to this challenge and thinks it helps make a piece look vintage.  And look at the crochet edge which made a real nice frame for for work.

I agree that her piece looks authentically vintage.  And thanks, Angie, for joining in.

Here is my update finally, but just an update.  I wanted to post a photo yesterday but time just kept slipping away as I pulled more loops until it was time for me to cook dinner.  Guess Angie and I got bit by the same bug.  Better late than never.

A couple other people who are interested  in joining in haven't started their project just yet so you can still join in.  This is the first posting I did about it and you can read more HERE.  

Me thinks me has decided what to hook next but won't reveal just yet because that decision might be different tomorrow,  lol.

Rainy day here and have only been outside to hang out my birdfeeders this morning.  Will be more of the same again tomorrow but I've a morning appointment so will have to get wet anyway.  Happy hooking friends!

Favorites Not Yet Hooked

I just scrolled thru my saved photos of antique rugs I've replicated and counted 56.  Some were small mats, some medium size and a couple large.  Some patterns were drawn by other people and many drawn by me.  But that 'want to hook' list doesn't seem to end, as there's always another added.

On my to hook list for a few years is this antique Horse (22 x 35).  If I do hook it think I'd change that green to maybe a dark blue or black.

The Reclining Lamb has been on that list but the flame has diminished somewhat on it to make room for others going to the top.

Another on the list for a few years is the rug below with chickens  and geese.  Believe it or not it sold for $4,994 and dimensions are 24 x 41.

The wool hooked and shirred rug below sold for $10,073 and measures 31 x 44.  I've had it in my file since 2014 and is also new on my 'to hook' list. I'd want different colors so would surely want a teacher to help with color planning it.

Have had this photo of Basket of Flowers since 2019 but all of a sudden it seemed more interesting and making it on the list for the first time.  The original antique measures 27 x 55.

I've been intrigued by the design of Cogswell's Grant but don't have confidence in my color planning for it.  So it would be a rug to hook with a teacher also.   The original antique measures 28 x 39.

A new love interest is folk art horse which was found February 2022 and measures 36.5 x 52.  Of course if I were to draw it for me it wouldn't be that big.

Rooster, Berries and Hearts rug was hooked 1800's but don't have the dimensions for it.  I like this a lot too and will be among those favorites.

I drew a version of this 1907 Eagle rug for someone and she wanted the leaves and crosses removed.  It sorta looked interesting to hook then but isn't at the top of the list.

Guess I'd better get off'n this contraption so I can draw another Mache' Jacks pattern for someone.  Hope you enjoy what you're working on and have a great weekend.  Thankfully today the temperature is going to reach 65* which is more normal for us here this time of year.  I even turned the heat off but might need to turn it on before going to bed.
